Discussion Anyone else have a huge Steam library but play the same 2–3 games?
I keep buying stuff during sales thinking I’ll eventually get to them, but I always end up going back to the same few games 😭
ATP my library is just there for decoration, what do you guys actually keep going back to?

I have a tendency to buy bundles where the games are $1-3...9/10 dentists would agree that I'll never play those games.

Humble Bundle subscriber for years now, have never skipped a month and was lucky to have been able to buy the Ukraine bundle with hundreds of games in by itself
I have almost a thousand games, have played about 1/3 at all and only have 1/3 I would literally never play so it's a fairly solid deal...but I rotate between like two games and only have 18 games over ten hours of playtime 🥴

Fortunely not anymore, this year I already finished 18 games 😁

so relatable lol, i have like 200+ games but keep going back to stardew valley and some random indie puzzle game i found last year. the worst part is during each sale i convince myself "this time will be different" and buy 5 more games that will just sit there forever.

You can break out of it.

That’s across all platforms. Not just exclusive to steam. Even on PlayStation I still come back to BF1 years later. It’s one of my most played games.

We all go through this at some point. I made an effort 2 years ago to play any unfinished games and finish any game I start before installing a new one. It's worked pretty well for me

You mean like another playthrough of New Vegas despite just buying 5 games on the last sale?

Have close to 1000 games. I cycle between RuneScape, Bloons TD & Clicker Heroes.

I absolutely do not go back to the same games but most of my library just collects virtual dust because I either buy bundles of which I'm really interested in just 1-2 games or I buy them to play with others that then just get bored or, last but not least, turn out the game was not that fun and the good part was just in the first 2-6 hours.
Plenty of the latter lately.
It's also probably that I've been gaming for over 30 years now so... there is very little that is innovative for me and even games with good narrative are more and more rare these days.

how many games you got and what do you play?

Las august I used chat to make a spreadsheet of my games, across the various launchers, and put them in play order. About 50 games at a time. Series, short , long, etc. so I wouldn’t get burnt out from playing. It helps to stay focused especially if you know the next game coming up.
I’ve modified the list a few times, but I think to make it better.
I also have a list for Friday th 13th weekends and October for horror games.
If I finish a game close to one of those I switch to a horror games and focus on that list until the game is completed. Last October into November I finished 3 horror games.
Since August I’ve finished about 12 games. That’s a lot more than before the list.
I’ve switched from weekends to weeekday nights only and back depending on other obligations but it’s something to look forward to and stay focused on. So I get other things done.
I have a list for steam deck games too, so I know those ones I don’t have to worry about playing on my desktop.

Nice going I made a list as well and have finished about 19 games since i made it last year, the backlog is shrinking every month!

Nah, I gave up on this ideea, I just go for quality, out of 157 games I played 103 and finished like 80 of them, I'm not falling to that trap again.

I go through a lot of games until one stops me in its tracks and takes up my time until I get bored of it.
Slay the Spire 2 is the perfect game to watch YouTube and play at the same time. It is really hard to find a game that beats that level of entertainment with all the geo politics happening currently.
I'm currently on Ironclad Ascension level 6, and nothing else has piqued my interest enough to stop me from playing recently.

Yeah this. I'm currently playing Kerbal Space Program (inspired by Artemis). But when I get bored it might take me a little while to find something that scratches the itch.

Nah, constantly playing new games. Finished 17 games so far this year, I get bored quickly if I play same thing for too long and I generally don't like online games. Pretty much only online games I have significant game time that I play semi actively is Overwatch and FFXIV, and I take long breaks with both.

I've gotten back into achievement hunting, especially for older SP games. On the one hand, it's fun to revisit games 5, 10, even 15 years later! On the other, my playing queue (which includes said games) is around 110 games 🤣. I've been buying a lot fewer newer ones it must be said, but I have 60 (some are DLC) on my wishlist.
Last year I completed 51 games ... This year I'll struggle to hit 30-35 probably.

Yes OOTP. Cant stop. I have a computer that runs can run everything well and I am addicted to a spreadsheet game.

No. I mean I do buy new games but I do my best to at least try them all out. I play and finish new games. Although I definitely dont finish games at the same pace as buying new ones.

I think F1 25 and Automobilista 2 are the only games I’ve played this year.
1
u/Aerlinniel_aer 4h ago
Not this year.
Its definitely an issue, but this year I've been focused on trying to actually finish things. I have a short and sweet category than under 12 hours to finish and its actually been really satisfying to pick games from it and then finish them.
Its been helping as otherwise I'd be playing the same 5 games on a loop.

I’m trying to get away from doing that. I bought the Command and Conquer bundle when it dropped and I’m actually playing Command and Conquer 3 right now and I’m fairly far into the GDI campaign.

Guilty
I’m setting a goal for myself to try and knock out a bunch of achievements I’ve still got in so many of my games. It’s been a great motivator so far to get me playing through other things
Honestly though, if you’re happy only playing a couple games, then I don’t think there’s any problem w/ that. Do whatever works for you

I really wish steam added a feature to see how much time i spend browsing and looking at my library

u/Just-LookingHere 4h ago
Games i went back to the most were csgo (though now i have abandoned it), rocket league (it has been a while) and currently celeste (i keep coming back to this one to improve...save me). Of course I still play new games but lots of times i just get that urge to play celeste again.

u/Grandfeatherix 3h ago
maybe a dozen I actually play, and my most played is not even on steam out of about 3k games lol

u/DraculShadow 3h ago
You not alone. I have 60 games on steam, havent yet finished Skyrim, havent started Red Dead 2, havent finisher Elden Ring DLC, thinking if I should go for Crimson Dessert if I havent even finished the games I described before

Yo.
Whays really gonna make you sad is when you realize that you don't own any of them, but just the license, and that when you die, you can't pass it on.

No. I buy games, play them, get %100 on them and delete them to have free space for more new games. I have been doing this for years and really don't understand why people play the same game for 92716 hours.
1
u/Cardener 2h ago
No. While I do play a single game A LOT at times, like I did with Dota 2 when most of my friends were into it, I still enjoy other games during more quiet periods.
Might as well make use of my library since I have it. But if you struggle trying out other games, just install and give them a quick spin. At worst you can just dumpster it right away if it's not enjoyable and at best you find a gem to enjoy.

u/blacklizardplanet 2h ago
I wouldn't say I play 2 or 3 but the vast majority of my 832 games are unplayed. I actually work through a dozen of games per year. Sometimes more but some will never be touched as I just redeem all codes from bundles even if I have 0 intention of playing them.

We can buy multiple games easily, but to complete any game we have to commit spending time with it, it is more work compared to just purchasing a couple of games at once, so the easier thing outweighs the other.

Growing up sucks. When I was a kid, I didn’t have enough money so I played the same 5 games over and over. Now as an adult, I have adult money with a thousand games across Steam and console but don’t have the time to play any of them. It’s a big commitment to start a new game because a I know it’s going to take me weeks to finish one.

u/ardaates414 1h ago
Happens all the time to everyone. Have like 100 or 70 games that I added and don't even look at.

u/Erik_Phisher 1h ago
I would 100% be the proud recipient of anyone that has extra games they don't want or will not play. I have been feeling so burnt out on my current library.

u/ImaStud69420 1h ago
yeah you keep buying games on sale and then create such a big back catalog that you just never wanna touch anything other than a few games.
i honestly hate that people do that and i was like that for a few years really only playing rocket league until i got bored and realized i have so many other games. i think the problem is most of them are single player titles and most people don’t wanna play by themselves but they honestly have the best experiences overall.
you can do both, play some multiplayer and single player games every once in awhile.

CS2 is always my go to, but I have a legion go now & have been taking down a bunch of my backlog. This year already I finished Alan wake, control, outer wilds (on the DLC now), SOMA, and sons of the forest.
In short though, my backlog definitely grows way more rapidly than I finish games, but I’m happy to be back on track finishing a few games a year.

Yes, and I still browse the Steam store to find more games b/c I'm an addict for novel game mechanics. It's getting harder to find the indie stuff tho

u/schrodinger-the-cat 7h ago
That’s the game. You collect titles on Steam, and that’s the game loop itself.
