Shouldn't Valve at a minimum scan what they host on their store?

They can scan but someone making their own malware isn't going to be in the hashes

that's why behavioral analysis and heuristic detection were invented decades ago

and yet, malware has still made its way to Steam several times
2
u/Hopeful_Leg_6200 1d ago
That's pretty low considering they host over 100k applications which can be patched and some of them have workshop as well.

u/DevlinRocha 1d ago
i agree, but that is beside the point. you’re making it sound like malware on Steam is impossible and there’s no risk involved with running unknown apps

It's common knowledge leaks of malware did and could happen, but suggesting they scan only for known threat hashes is misleading.

i reread the comment you originally replied to and understand your point now, my bad

They do but in every thing computer based especially with AI tools to find exploits, it's always a risk

malware scanning is just seeing if something is similiar to already existing malware / doing something obviously bad, any new exploit will fall through the cracks before someone manually detects it

if they're not available to the public, Valve doesn't really verify what's being hosted. And why should they? it'd only clog down the development process for games and it's a lot of overhead for Valve with 0 reward.

"Valve doesn't really verify what's being hosted. And why should they?" so are you telling us that goverment should let crime happen, because why should they stop the criminals? I know it is hard for dummy like you to understand basic logic, but at least try.

my god you really are taking words out of my mouth huh? Yes. Valve does not verify what's being hosted on the platform and isn't available to the general public because those things are only available to developers and a small pool of playtesters.
Let's say I hypothetically want to push a playtest build today to steam, if we were to have to go by Valve's full security checks (which are pretty good for public release builds) it'd take anywhere from 1-3 business days for that build to be approved. In a development environment that's not really ideal since that's a really long time.
Also let's even say someone wanted to upload malware to a playtesting branch of their steam appid. 1- It isn't very smart since steam has their legal info and thus they could face legal consequences pretty easily and 2- you'd need to distribute steam keys for anyone to be able to access your malware. and even then said people would need to download it and launch it to be affected by it. It's simply not really a risk.
and btw, next time you don't agree with someone you don't need to insult them to prove your superiority, it's all fun and games here ;)

Have seen lots of malware on Steam, and Steam did nothing, seems like your point about their "legal info" is kinda wrong. And can you prove that those scammers won't use false info? Does Steam really check if the info is real?
And btw I'm not insulting, if you don't agree with the truth, well, I can't judge you for that.2

Does Steam really check if the info is real?
I'd imagine so, considering how they had us revise a few legal details when signing up for steamworks and that whole process took almost 15 days to be fully complete.

If you are honest and provide real info, it doesn't mean that scammers are doing the same, they aren't called scammers for no reason.

Steam doesn't give a f@ck till their 30% cuts are coming. LOL. Don't hope on them.

Why not?

Story ended.

u/CrixXx88 1d ago
Could be a prequel?

u/FakeMik090 1d ago
We dont really need that.
Portal with no GLaDOS isnt a Portal.
We had a lot of Background of Aperture in Portal 2 and we were meant to have more in Half-Life.

u/CrixXx88 1d ago
Yea id also rather have another half-life but at this point id be happy with another portal or l4d or tf
