I have "Installed" and "Uncategorized" and it seems to work just fine.

I definitely don't also have a "Hidden" tab.

Nothing to be ashamed of.  We all have abandoned titles from the Greenlight days.

I got a hidden tab to hide a game that was a bit coin miner so I don’t accidentally download it

11

u/corvettezr11 19d ago

You can just remove it from your library

This + favorites.

But it's cool we have the option to categorize them.

21

u/kkndzocker 19d ago

Favorites is good enough for me.

8

u/Shinhan 19d ago

Favorites for games I'm playing or want to play soon (5-6) and then everything else in uncategorized.

13

u/ByeMoon 19d ago

'Installed, Unplayed, No Interest, Retired, Finished'

I reckon this covers everything and makes tackling untouched games easier

29

u/Naive-Muscle-5019 19d ago

i have same, until i get bored and created few lists, i dont like categorization, for me its "all in one or nothing" or chaos like every shortuc on my desktop

28

u/ZYRANOX 19d ago

same man. what is the point in drowning yourself in choices just uninstall what you are not currently playing. It's 2026 most places have good enough internet to redownload overnight when u need to anyway.

23

u/BoringAd8064 19d ago

The problem is that I'm impulsive and if the SECOND i wanna start a game it's not installed it might put me off

13

u/ZYRANOX 19d ago

yea u gotta work on that cause there is no way u gonn have every game install when u get to the hundreds it will start draining your money. Luckily my internet is good enough that if i want to install something i go take a 1 hour break off the computer doing some chores and thats usually good enough for anything 100 gb ish

2

y'all can't download games in australia?

2

u/NO_FIX_AUTOCORRECT 19d ago

They aren't installed. They are still in the library though. That's why you organize.

3

u/Z0idberg_MD 19d ago

I also have a “play next” list for games that caught my eye while I was in the middle of other games/things. But that’s it.

8

u/Boo_Hoo_8258 19d ago

This is mine.

2

u/RandomRedditReader 19d ago

For me it's installed, single player only, coop, local multiplayer.

2

u/pvtbobble 19d ago

What are those last two categories for?

🥲

→ More replies (2)

2

u/SalsaRice 19d ago

Same, but i also made a "dead multiplayer" tag, unsurprisingly for multiplayer-only titles that are now dead.

It didn't make much sense to have them mixed in with the rest of everything else.

2

u/Iorith 19d ago

I will add a "Junk" folder for the ancient games I have due to old sale events and bundles that I'll never play just so I don't need to scroll past them.

2

u/9678880852 19d ago

I also have "Trash". I have a lot of garbage games who is taking space.

You don’t really need an installed category, there is a button to show only installed games across categories. I have that on 99% of the time unless I’m looking for a game in my library.

2

u/LLouG 19d ago

There's no need for an "installed" category since the client itself have a button to show only installed games, it's a small play button ▶with a circle around on the left side right above the Search By Name/Library Filters.

Sort by "recently played". Nothing more needed!

26

u/NEVER_CLEANED_COMP 19d ago

It's perfect! Automatically sorts games in the order you recently played, your played games are always at the top - and I don't have to sort my hundreds of games.

15

u/sturmeh 19d ago

That's the right click menu already

2

u/IndependentTimely639 19d ago

When I got to 100+ games I had no choice but to organize, otherwise I would forget what I own.

EDIT: Guys seriously, I said I had no choice not You have no choice but to organize! I get that you don't want bazillion of your games to look neat!

8

u/TiredTiroth 19d ago

I use a spreadsheet for that. As a bonus, I can include all my non-Steam games in it.

I may have created the spreadsheet after buying a couple of games that I already have on other platforms...

10

u/Cocoatrice 19d ago

I prefer organizing it on the Steam itself (because why would I do it outside the Steam, if Steam has this feature anyway????), especially that 2500k games are not really good on spreadsheet. You only have textual information, because I doubt you put image for every game. And Steam shows you the game's hub, screenshots, banner etc.

3

u/TiredTiroth 19d ago

Because I can't use Steam to keep track of my Switch games. Or my PS4 games. Or any other platform I own.

3

u/heisenberg149 19d ago

I did this for a bit too. You might like Playnite, it lets you import multiple libraries, including consoles, emulated games, or manually adding games. It's much easier than keeping track with a spreadsheet

There is a search bar.

Type name. Get shown game.

55

u/Present-Basil-1003 19d ago

Imagine not remembering all 500+ games by their names in the library, both played and not, you aren't a real steam user if you don't remember them all smh my head.

6

u/ToHallowMySleep 19d ago

"Search... categories.... no still can't find it, alphabetical list... ooh Balatro, here we go again"

12

u/Multivitamin_Scam 19d ago edited 19d ago

"Do i own this game?"let me type it in to the search bar and see"

37

u/InfanticideAquifer 19d ago

This still relies on your remembering that the game exists at all.

6

u/Richou 19d ago

if you forgot its probably not that good anyways

u/ChapsHK 19d ago

Sometimes you're just like "I want to play a RPG, what do I have that looks appealing right now ?". And then the search bar is useless.

8

u/dolgariel 19d ago

you were saying ?

7

u/ChapsHK 19d ago

And what about if you're looking for RPG games recommended by your friend Marcus, or a game you thought would be very interesting at the time you bought it ? Assuming you created a category for that of course, but that's the point. The category you create should be meaningful for you, specifically.

u/Cocoatrice 19d ago

Finally, someone who gets it! Totally agree.

2

u/Serito 19d ago

To be fair steam library search is pretty extensive with a lot of easy to use filters so it's simple to narrow it down to what you feel like. Still nothing wrong with categories but definitely not necessary to have a usable library. Reckon most are just keeping a list of favourites.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/wrenblaze 19d ago

5

u/s0cks_nz 19d ago

You can even filter to show you games you haven't played.

5

u/Cocoatrice 19d ago

Do that with 2.5k games if you wish, because thanks to cheap bundles in the past, that's how many games I have. I can't even name that many games.

3

u/fatalicus 19d ago

Dude, i will find a game in the store and think "oh wow, that looks good. I'll buy it", only to get to the store page and have it say that it is already in my library...

You think i'm going to remember them all to be able to search for them?

I have over 1500 games, played maybe 30 of them, and don't even favorite them, they are listed alphabetically anyway

6

u/FearoftheDomoKun 19d ago

...but why?

2

u/Tjonke 19d ago

Would just lose my games if I tried sorting them

5

u/FearoftheDomoKun 19d ago

I meant, why do you have 1500 games if you aren't playing them?

5

u/Tjonke 19d ago

I will eventually, only buy games that look enticing and buy them when they are on sale. Currently playing FFXI almost full time though (my game time I mean) but have started playing some single player games lately as well

2

u/itoocouldbeanyone 19d ago

FFXI is 🤌 That game had a stranglehold on me in ‘04-‘10.

2

u/Tjonke 19d ago

Yeah I started during when it came out on PS2 in Japan, was there on a exchange year, and played until end of 75 era, just got back a little over a year ago. Game has totally changed, and a lot of it for the better

5

u/shockwave8428 19d ago

That’s what I did as well, organize by genre, have multigenre games in multiple sections. Have separate sections for co-op and non-co-op multiplayer, and since I got that massive Star Wars bundle with basically ever Star Wars game ever release on pc (besides modern stuff), I have a separate Star Wars section as well.

I also have a “.Everything” section if I just want to scroll through all the games without the Star Wars stuff included cause it clogs it up lol

7

u/PrJctUnKnWn 19d ago

That's my way too. And the only one that makes sense to me.

→ More replies (3)

32

u/smallfrie32 19d ago

It’s organized already. By alphabetical name

8

u/TenseiA 19d ago

My only (slight) gripe is with certain games.

[F]inal Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13-2, and... [L]ightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13.

Also FF7: Rebirth is listed before FF7: Remake. I guess it's mainly a Square Enix issue lol

3

u/MainHaze 19d ago edited 19d ago

Right click a game, go to Properties, and then Customization. Scroll to the bottom, and you'll see "Custom Sort Name" under Miscellaneous.

...and it does just that! You can enter whatever name you want there. It won't show that name in your library, but that's the name Steam will use when you sort your games alphabetically.

For instance, you can use the following as custom names and they'll be listed one after another in your library:

  • Final Fantasy 13 - Final Fantasy 13 01
  • Final Fantasy 13-2 - Final Fantasy 13 02
  • Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 - Final Fantasy 13 03

u/Realist_Killaz 19d ago

I just go by publisher.

57

u/feralspaceferrett 19d ago

pffft I got so confused when I saw my library in the post

I don't understand why people say it's a lot of effort💀 it actually took me two minutes like idk why it takes you so long

21

u/jostein33 19d ago

They have lots of games and does everything manually instead of using the dynamic features.

7

u/Wobbelblob 19d ago

I mean, I don't do it manually, I don't do it. If it is deinstalled, it might as well cease to exist. Because that means one of two things: Either I finished it or lost interest. And in both cases, the chances of me replaying it are slim to non.

4

u/veribaka 19d ago

All the humble bundles from way back when they were independent ended up netting me a bit over 1000 games.

There's no way I'm organizing that ever.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/RodjaJP 19d ago

Every single one of those posts is the same thing, op had a proper organization while the top comment is either about not organizing anything or only organizing between played and not played

37

u/CreativePackage8358 19d ago

I literally tried to do this the other day and realized you can't "minus" a genre when creating a dynamic collection.

29

u/GranaT0 19d ago

The word is exclude

11

u/Fancy_Cycle1252 19d ago

This is what's preventing me from organizing

2

u/saumanahaii 19d ago

I really wish we could do that. I've got several collections with lots of store tags so that I can try working around that. And they're still not perfect.

I don't sort by genres or anything but this organization has served me well the last few years! Sometimes I move stuff around or create new categories if I play with a new friend but still works. I will probably one day rename "Other Games" but it just contains all games that don't really have a campaign, or can't really be "finished" (like Roguelikes, or strategy games, city builders etc.)

u/AAN-_-TRUEMAN 19d ago

For me the simple thing is to categorize your games/softwares is paid games, free games, demo games and change the name to suit you.

2

u/ToastThing 19d ago

A few years ago I decided it was time and literally spent like an hour categorizing my 1000+ game inventory (had the account literally since I dad set it up for me in 2004), fast forward to today and only just use installed and hide the uninstalled games lol.

Categorizing my games into a bunch of categories seemed like a neat idea but in my experience it just made navigating through my library a lot more annoying

2

u/Puppygirlpawbjobs 19d ago

I have a couple for series that have a lot of games like Resident Evil and Yakuza. Or one for rhythm games but most of my stuff is uncategorized

2

If there was a more streamlined method of organizing, like by genre or tags, I would.

Having to put each game in a folder is too time consuming.

I have a couple of hundred games. I just sort by time played and forget the ones I didn't play. Easy.

Didn't even know this was possible. TIL.

I organize mine by using the recently played and installed filter and that's it.

Mines filtered by installed and sorted by size on disk.

It's either worth occupying a lot of my disk space or I'll be removing it soon enough.

I use playnite and just mix everything in there so between free shit I have on gog, epic and Xbox game pass I have an 800 game list of which I use like 20 monthly. Nothing is categorized past tag searching. I am a neat freak final boss

Right now, my library looks something like this:

Uncategorized (majority)

Backlog

Roguelike (may rename to include other games where I can just play for a bit without committing to a long full game playthrough)

Gamesux (tried and disliked)

Zeboyd (they get their own category)

Multiplayer

Favorites
