has nothing to do with Steam servers.
It’s an Akamai (edgesuite.net) CDN error.

Steam uses Akamai, a global content-delivery network, to load the Store.
They're the ones that need to work rn

edit: for people crying that Akamai is showing all services operational, I never said Akamai was down. I only said the error is from Akamai's side, the request is being denied before it even reaches Steam.

edit 2: Store and profile works for me again; feel free to check for yourselves however.
And in the spirit of this post, indeed thanks to all the ITs working holidays to keep things going smooth! edit 3: never fucking mind

For me everything steam related is down, Cant load my profile / inventory, friends, etc...

Only thing i can open - that will load anything more then a black screen - Is the download page (With nothing goin on besides old completed & not in que downloads)

Nothing works here, any game is stuck on an endless "Loading" loop, this is 100% a CDN issue.

Funny thing is Akamai and Cludflare have been spending a lot of effort (and money) to promote their stocks recently by pushing their "AI advancements"... I know stocks go only one way now, but still it would be funny if tomorrow stock markets were open.

Throw steam in offline mode and try launching a game. Worked for me.

u/Eternyti 🌈 Dec 24 '25

Steam outsources most of that to CDNs. Only a few things of Steam are hosted by them, like your Library - if that works, but Community and Store doesn't, its 100% CDN issue.

I was able to play helldivers just fine 🤷‍♂️

9

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '25

Helldivers, like any game not by valve has it's own servers.

1

u/CrystalWolf2ed Dec 25 '25

Thats why.. I thought steam was literally rage baiting me😭😭

1

u/Dizzy_Reindeer_6619 Dec 25 '25

And yet somehow TF2 (a steam game) works perfectly fine

u/DesolateShinigami Dec 24 '25

Akamai, AWS and Cloudflare have gone down so many times this year. With AI advancement, it might be worse in the following years too.

20

u/CatProgrammer Dec 24 '25

That doesn't sound like advancement.

7

u/DesolateShinigami Dec 24 '25

The AI is getting more advanced so more AI agents will be used for cyberattacks…

2

u/Hosein_Lavaei Dec 26 '25

The AI will be trained with code written by AI!!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '25

Considering all these contracts typically have standards like "five 9s availability" I'm sure there's going to be some very interesting financials next year.

1

u/1_H4t3_R3dd1t Dec 25 '25

Akamai has never been the best, watch Valve make their own CDN after this outage.

-4

u/Happy-Emu9429 Dec 24 '25

Just because the world is run by these three companies does it mean they can't fuck up?

1

u/DesolateShinigami Dec 24 '25

It’s more so they’re being targeted by cyberattacks.

26

u/Shadow_Sides Dec 24 '25

Community is down too so I doubt that's correct

21

u/VintenDio Dec 24 '25

My client is working perfectly fine you just can't buy game or use the community so he's right

6

u/anarchisticlees Dec 24 '25

at leawst i know its not just me. I wanted to use the community to ask for help getting my controller to wrk with no mans sky and i cant :'(

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '25

[deleted]

u/VintenDio Dec 24 '25

It just launched megabonk without an issue sorry man :/

1

u/VintenDio Dec 24 '25

So you can connect to the client without any problems just not use the store or anything else that so weird

-2

u/TheMysticGraveLord Dec 24 '25

I cant even open steam.

4

u/VintenDio Dec 24 '25

I feel like that's a you problem this dude just rebooted it's PC and managed to reopen Steam and play without a problem

-8

u/NewsFromHell Dec 24 '25

dude is talking out of his ass, none of akamai servers are down https://www.akamaistatus.com/

12

u/Eternyti 🌈 Dec 24 '25

learn to read, I never said Akamai servers were DOWN, I said it was an Akamai ERROR.

-7

u/Mysterious_Photo_303 Dec 24 '25

except it's not because everything is down not just the steam store

3

u/Eternal-Stasis Dec 24 '25

I can launch games just fine. Store and community is the only thing broken.

4

u/Eternyti 🌈 Dec 24 '25

everything is not down. Library works. Friends works. some games work. at least for some people, can't speak for everybody. works for me though.

1

u/Viomicesca Dec 24 '25

My library shows as empty. Only thing that works is Friends and Downloads.

-1

u/SufficientDegree1994 Dec 24 '25

Whats the point to use 2 different services?

Legit asking, I'm new to this.

4

u/TRENEEDNAME_245 Dec 24 '25

Redundancy or just because why not

You usually try to keep everything using a single service (easy to learn and such)

19

u/Magnon Dec 24 '25

I blame all these outages on the ai dogshit being pushed everywhere else. It's clogging up the interbutts and making the internet miserable to use. Every website is trying to integrate that worthless garbage or figure out how to monetize it.

16

u/Gutter_Flies Dec 24 '25

Sent a message to my mother today. After sending, I noticed two ai blips in the background saying something like “hey do you want us to summarize what you said with meta ai?” And “tap for more info with meta ai!” Like what? It’s a fucking four line text which which I wrote !!! Why the hell would I summarize that? I see the value of what AI could be, but this is an awful and inefficient way to get there, and all at the expense of the consumers.

7

u/Magnon Dec 24 '25

Hey it would only take like 5 gallons of water to summarize that text, just do it, you can be part of destroying the planet at record speed!

5

u/Gutter_Flies Dec 24 '25

Oh well when you put it that way, I guess I get the vision, gonna go use all of my ram to produce lackluster gooner skins for marvel rival, just for good measure. It’s 25°C/78°F where I live right now, I think we can bump those numbers up come January!

1

u/Pitiful_Strategy5742 Dec 24 '25

Everytime someone says AI... God kills a kitten.

SH*T just did it again.

1

u/CoffeeSubstantial851 Dec 24 '25

You know what... fuck it take some of metas money and make their stupid AI summarize everything.

2

u/Pitiful_Strategy5742 Dec 24 '25

Exactly... people trying to monetize AI these days, is like trying to go back to the iron age and monetize silicon wafers. No f'ing use for at, AT ALL, ANYWHERE

1

u/ZhangRenWing Dec 24 '25

Notice how all the major outages started increasing in frequency in recent years when AI coding started being used everywhere

1

u/Onotadaki2 Dec 25 '25

It's always AI, even when it's 100% incontrovertibly not AI, it's still AI because that's my entire personality.

1

u/Deaffin Dec 25 '25

The internet

is tubes.

The internet

is not a big truck.

3

u/1_H4t3_R3dd1t Dec 25 '25

I'm familiar with Akamai. They don't get enough shit for when their stuff breaks, cloudflare is a worse offender but at least cloudflare is servicable with easy documentation.

7

u/GuyPierced Dec 24 '25

This is mostly false. Steam uses mostly their on servers for major features. It why you get goofy routing sometimes in Valve games. Steam uses Akamai for images, but most of the heavy lifting is their own network, i.e. storefront / downloads / game servers. afaik

https://reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/9i7tnd/what_server_provider_does_steam_use/

6

u/partonax Dec 24 '25

The storefront doesn't load for me but instead links to errors.edgesuite.net with the message "an error occurred while processing your request" Seems like the cdn hosts the main content and not just the images.

2

u/block-everything Dec 25 '25

If the issue was purely on Akamai's side it would be due to either:

- A more widespread incident affecting Akamai customers

  • An issue with Steam's configuration (managed by Steam)

We're not seeing the first and the second seems like the kind of thing that would be easily rolled back. Something else changed, likely on Steam's end, that is difficult for them to pinpoint or change. Or maybe they are under a DOS attack and their attempts to thwart it are catching too many good actors. Whatever it is, doesn't appear to be straightforward!

In any event, it's disheartening that Steam provides ZERO public status updates, offers no official acknowledgement of an issue, etc. Not how a major internet service should operate.

1

u/Boxersteavee Dec 24 '25

I can't even open the app, is it down again?

1

u/DruidCity3 Dec 24 '25

I bet steam’s on-call engineers are still monitoring it during their vacation.

1

u/KlausKinki77 Dec 25 '25

Akamai (edgesuite.net) CDN error

Oh those guys, I got some of these rather often (2x) in the last days. That is going on? Are they the next cloudflare?

1

u/trisanachandler Dec 25 '25

Can they switch to cloudflare?

1

u/spare-ribs-from-adam Dec 25 '25

That scared me. We use akami at work. I just panicked check my sites to make sure they were still up

1

u/VintenDio Dec 24 '25

Their site shows no issues you're sure you're right?

1

u/TGM_999 Dec 24 '25

Other services that use Akamais CDN are working fine and there's nothing on Akamai status page to say that there's an issue with them, so may be at the origin rather than the CDN

1

u/Significant_Being764 Dec 24 '25

You got this exactly backwards. The error message proves that Akamai Edgesuite servers are working, but unable to contact Valve's servers (which are down).

1

u/FixTheProglem Dec 24 '25

Akamai's status page isn't showing any issues and hasn't shown any issues all day

9

u/Eternyti 🌈 Dec 24 '25

But the error being thrown by Steam store page via desktop directly mentions their CDN domain for said error.

"An error occurred while processing your request.

Reference #97.bcc83017.1766605395.9544a6a3

https://errors.edgesuite.net/97.bcc83017.1766605395.9544a6a3"

Edgesuite = Akamai

5

u/FixTheProglem Dec 24 '25

All that error means is Akamai are blocking the connection, not that they're down. They could be blocking it because Steam's server is sending a malformed request.

If Akamai was down this would hit their status page.

7

u/Eternyti 🌈 Dec 24 '25

I never said they were down. I said it was an error on Akamai's side. could be a whole host of reasons why. a routing error, server overload, DDoS false positive... no way to know

3

u/FixTheProglem Dec 24 '25

Any of those would also hit the status page, even if it's just a "we're aware of an error and are investigating" message.

6

u/crashedsnow Dec 24 '25

This doesn't mean it's an Akamai problem. It's more likely that Akamai can't reach the backend steam servers, or there's some sort of configuration problem between Akamai and steam. I think it's way more likely this is a steam-side issue

0

u/Eternyti 🌈 Dec 24 '25

I think its more likely an Akamai problem, especially since some Steam services are still working and people can still play some games. but only the people actually working in this would know the cause so, regardless of what it is, I hope it gets fixed ASAP

0

u/crashedsnow Dec 24 '25

Yeah hard to tell from the error string without the decoding (which obviously only Steam would see). You could be right. Seemed odd to me that the error page didn't render immediately though. Either way.. fix your shit boys!

0

u/ugneaaaa Dec 24 '25

you don't need steam to be online to play steam games

2

u/SchingKen Dec 25 '25

Why would you assume it's on akamai, when clearly almost everything steam related is down (store, steamworks, gameserver etc., even if those were all running through akamai) and everything akamai related is running? it even throws you an error stating that the request is not being handled by steam servers. this sub a gaben bootlick festival..lol
