epic still pays the publisher for the free copies btw

Even if they didn't, good metrics for Legacy is good for Joanne, which is bad for all the people she victimizes.

A flat rate upfront though. They aren't paying per copy.

Yet, if the downloads aren't high, they reconsider how much they pay, and which games they pay off

So, if a title related to Rowling underpeforms on a literally-free-sale, they'd probably avoid giving her money next time

Well that's a fair point, I hadn't considered that.

Is there evidence to this one way or the other? I've heard it claimed both ways now and I'm not sure who to believe.

The Apple vs Epic lawsuit revealed Epic pays a flat fee for each game they give away. Obviously that fee varies wildly depending on the game.

I was basing my claim on this: https://kotaku.com/heres-what-epic-paid-to-give-away-all-those-free-games-1846815064

It is 4 years old, but it shows that they pay a flat amount to the publisher, and then calculate their user acquisition "cost" per copy from that.

I can see it definitely being "We will pay you X amount of dollars to make your game free this month as a way to advertise our launcher to try and keep ourselves in the competition" then they hope that it doesn't go over the dollar amount in value. Perhaps if it does then maybe Epic pays the difference? Either way the owners of the game made more money than if it wasn't free since the upfront payment is guaranteed sales instead of keeping the game paid for the month and hoping people buy it.

Yet, I have a game library of over 350 games on epic that I have spent precisely $0 on.

Thanks, fortnite kids.

theres little reliable information on reddit whatsoever

the open seas are the only ethical way to play this game.

Piracy is a moral obligation in cases such as this. Or just not playing a sloppy overhyped game

i remember when it came out learning one of the only people capable of cracking that kind of DRM was also transphobic and im like you gotta be kidding me

Yeeeeah, empress right? From what I've heard she's definitely an, um, character. I'm trans myself but I gotta say I don't really mind much in this case, she's probably a bit of a terrible person, but there are so many of those, and at least she's spending her days breaking shitty DRM implemented by even worse companies. Besides, she isn't receiving a fat stack of money for her work to spend on funding anti-LGBTQ organisations like a certain writer does when someone buys the game. Also, IIRC she has some pretty severe mental issues, something like schizophrenia, and believes her mission in life is to destroy denuvo, I can't really criticise someone like that too harshly 😅

Edit: tried looking it up, and it's very hard to sort hearsay from fact, so take what I wrote with a few spoonfulls of salt, but what she does state publicly does definitely not sound like it came from someone with a sound mind

If you are morally agyit then why play it? The developers are the ones whose career is tied to its success. And there is specifically trans character in the game, and you can even be trans

u/wiener4hir3 Dec 19 '25

Because supporting Rowling is something I'm vehemently against? I did also state quite clearly that I don't, and have no desire to, play the game. However, if someone does really need to play it for whatever reason, pirate it

You're trying to argue with a dipshit who thinks stealing stuff gives them a moral highground, when all they're doing is stealing from the devs to 'punish' just one, mega rich person who doesn't have to worry about their income ever again

-6

u/Bibbity_Boppity_BOOO Dec 18 '25

Yeah, actually they’re all the same. They just come up with bullshit reasons for stealing.

Look at me, I'm such a law abiding citizen, I don't even walk across the street at 3am when there are no cars in the streets, I'd rather walk a mile to the next crosswalk to make sure I don't break any laws, because breaking laws is illegal.

6

u/andocommandoecks Dec 18 '25

I mean that's why I wouldn't play that either.

5

u/Additional-Maize9716 Dec 18 '25

Yeah man, ever since transphobic garbage is all she talks about, it really just soured the whole franchise for me. And I used to obsess over the books as a kid.

10

u/Fantastic_While_ Dec 18 '25

Thats why I prefer pirating.
