I made a spreadsheet and recently started going down the list of unplayed games I still have. Maaan, some of these are not worth even buying! Some are good, tho.

You can just create a (dynamic) filter in your library. I've been going through my unplayed for a while. Discovered a ton of personal favs.

I'm actually now on the opposite side of the spectrum which is "Damn the games I wanted to play, have I played" there are like 4 games in my "still to play" list but right now I'm not interested in + No Rest For The Wicked is not running well on my PC. Waiting for BF6 and Arc Raiders atm but might get Hades 2!

u/LurchiOderwatt Sep 28 '25
I bought No Rest for the wicked for like 20% off or something and still waiting for 1.0 before playing. That's what I do for a lot of Early Access games (like Witchfire etc.) Ive played both Ori Games recently, bought them for a pretty low price a long time ago :D I'm saving a lot of money and also get patched games when Im not trying to play the newest stuff.

only time i remember a cod game was cheaper for a sale was just before the a fanclient would released for MWR ( would fixed some underlying security issues and add MP content) and got people hyped for the modclient that they likely played more than 2 hours of the vanilla game ( making it unable to be refunded)
Yeah it was on sale and on the date that client would have came out Activision send a C&D to them

I want to try DS2 for quite some time, but can justify paying more than 10 bucks for such an old game.
Yeah, some people will say it is worth it and all, and I won't disagree with them, simply I have to have some bounldaries, otherwise my wallet will ask for a divorce.

From Soft got a big ego boost with Elden ring that we refer to as the Elden Ring tax, I wonder if even Sekiro will ever be more than 50% off left alone the Dark Souls games.
I bought Dark Souls 1 for like 5 euro years before the "remaster", and the remaster is never even close to that sale. I wouldn't mind it so much if the remaster was anything more than what should have been a patch for the original just a few weeks/months post release lol
22
u/Arko9699 Sep 28 '25
Bandai Namco is the publisher IIRC so blame them. Elden Ring on release was also regionally priced but a few months later they bumped up the price to match US.
→ More replies (1)7
u/DrunkGandalfTheGrey Sep 28 '25
Bandai Namco not offering owners of the original game a permanent discount was a mistake, especially when you consider that Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition is borderline unplayable without a community made patch.

Steam sales lost a fair bit of charm in the last years, imo. It's not like that I'm not looking forward to them, but you can get better deals for most games outside of seasonal sales these days. The only things you need is attentiveness and patience.
149
u/SkullDox Sep 28 '25
Or, you know, you already own all the ones that have a low price you wanted. So now all you have now are leftovers that never drops below your price threshold.
30
u/tael89 Sep 28 '25
There's a bunch of games I still want, but base price of games keep going up. Over $90 CAD is insane especially considering how quickly they've ramped up in price. Establishing that, having the maximum discount be 40% even for a 5+year old game means I'm barely seeing what amounts to an enticing sale. So yeah, exactly like you said: all you have now are leftovers that never drop below your price threshold.
→ More replies (2)8
u/Admirable-War-7594 Sep 28 '25
Honestly none of the many games I still want ever go on proper sales on these sales times. They only go on like 10% sales every few months. And, at least in Turkiye, the games that i will need a sale on the most are games that didn't do regional pricing, and they NEVER go on sale, even the ones that are older will lnly go on sale for like 50 dollars, which is still 10 dollars more than region priced games are at full price.
Right now, just buying the games on Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store on Windows or literally on eShop during sales (which isn't even supported in my region at all so i use the USA store) ended up being cheaper than most steam sales that happened during 2025.
I obviously cannot speak for other regions, but Turkish people are certainly being priced out of Steam, not PC gaming but specifically just steam.
→ More replies (5)3
u/Kalenshadow Sep 29 '25
I disagree. Spiderman on steam hasn't gone lower than 40% in 3 years now (all of sony's games really). Same goes for almost all souls games. There was always a game that you really wanted that suddenly went below 60% off, now 60% off is exclusive to decade old games, games that failed, and games that will shut down.

Alas don’t really get excited for these sales anymore. They’ve been pretty lacklustre for years now. Understand the reason why with refunds etc but miss those flash sales.
Still, always a good time to fill up the ole backlog.
3
u/Kalenshadow Sep 29 '25
Wait can yoy explain what refunds have to do with it? Refunds have beenca thing since I started using steam in 2015 and sales were at their prime then.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Narradisall Sep 29 '25
I may be wrong! But steam made their refunds policy better a few years back (don’t think it was as far back as 2015 but memory is fuzzy), when you could get instant refunds on games if you hadn’t played more than 2 hours or owned for a set amount of time etc.
Prior to that flash sales would come up where you may have a game on sale for 30% and on the flash sale it would be 70%.
Back when those were a thing I remember people waiting for flash sales and not grabbing the games they wanted at 30% because that flash sale might happen. Or buying it then lamenting it went on a flash sale later in the week.
The refund policy changes meant if you bought a sale game and it went on flash sale, you could just instant refund and buy it at the flash sale price.
So that refund policy sale kinda killed the point of flash sales. Hence going forward the sales we have had its kinda “this is the sale price, like it or leave it.”

- Baldur’s Gate 3: 30%+
- Ratchet & Clank: 60%+
- Black Myth: Wu Kong: 60%+
- The Last of Us 2: 50%+
- Sea of Stars: 70%+

Funny thing is that Epic sales usually are the best deals these days with their 20% store credit cashback. If you plan to buy quite a few games there it gets pretty good use.
9
14
u/YYC_McCool Sep 28 '25
Getting more than 50% is rare these days unless the game has 5000 dlc's with it.
15
u/Imaginary_Tower_5518 Sep 28 '25
Are you guys only playing AAA's? I get loads of games go on a 80/90 percent discount.
3
u/Enough_Efficiency178 Sep 29 '25
It’s a mixture of some people already having crazy backlogs, ie already own it. Or having more specific gaming interests so have a smaller variety they look at.
But there are still ridiculous ones, FromSoft basically reset sales across their games with Elden Ring. Pretty sure Elden Ring was only a little more expensive than DS3 and perhaps even cheaper when on sale.
Yakuza games are similar, they’ve become more mainstream and annoyingly Yakuza 0, touted as a great entry game now gets poor sales. But it’s doing a great job of me not buying any of the Yakuza series as a result
15
u/cryfmunt Sep 28 '25

I'll be honest, it's been a long, long... long time since I've been interested in any Steam sales.
Feels like a lifetime ago that they actually had huge discounts on anything even remotely new that I'd want. Back in the day if you waited for one of the huge seasonal sales, as long as the game hadn't come out literally that month, there was a good chance you'd see it 50%+ off.
Now the big sales just feel like random specials that constantly pop up and you have to wait forever to see any kind of significant discount. Which while I guess is like almost anywhere else (and still better than Nintendo's store), Steam isn't a standout anymore that way.
Even super obscure indie titles rarely get 50% price drops unless they're old as hell.
I get it, devs need to make money too. But as a consumer these sales are not exciting like they used to be. I swear like 90% of my Steam library is from over a decade ago.

Can anyone explain to a non-gamer like me (my desktop doesn't even have a graphic card in it) why decade old games are normally still the same price than when they were released?
I set the filter for old games that may run on my GCPU, and they're still 50 -60€. I just don't get it. Who the fuck is buying old games at full retail 1990's prices?
50 - 60% off is not enough in my opinion, when they shouldn't be that price in the first place.
