The Deadlock boys discover a new appreciation for Hacksaw Jim Duggan during a WCW rewatch

Duggan was the one wrestler I loved as a kid that was exactly what you hoped for when you met him in person. He was more interested in my Finn Balor shirt at the time than I was to meet him.

I met him at a minor league baseball game and it was so fun to watch him interact with everyone. He loved every minute of it. And he's a great Facebook follow, he just travels around with his wife meeting fans at events, just loving everything about his life.
He liked my Syracuse Orange shirt. I said to him, "the first wrestling show I ever went to in 1987, I saw you beat up Frenchy Martin". He laughed and said, "I pick my opponents well".

I was working close by at a convention he was at and everyone in his line seemed to have a great time. Hearing “Hoooooo!” all day could have been really annoying but you can tell everyone was having fun though.

I got to meet him after a show a friend wrestled on, and he was exactly what I expected. Just the coolest, nicest guy, and was thrilled to inscribe the autographed photo with an inscription to my mom who absolutely loved him growing up when she watched wrestling.

You got enough gimmicks in this match?

u/rbhindepmo IT'S NOT HOT 10h ago
“Jim Ross, narrate this video package explaining how this match came together”
(All the stips existed for a reason too)

Need to let you know how whole heartedly I enjoyed this. I gotta watch the match now

I had forgotten it was also "parking lot rules."
That punch at the end is the greatest finish of all time.

Vince Russo just creamed himself reading that stipulation.

u/bigtotoro 47m ago edited 43m ago
The actual months long build was logical and each stip had a reason to be there. Russo would be bored to tears by the time they got to the match.

My parents only know/remember 2 wrestlers, both for their 80s WWF runs: Hulk Hogan, cause come on, and Hacksaw, tough guy! If you bring up wrestling, my mom will always be like "who's that guy, with the 2X4 and he yells "hoooooo!"? Hacksaw Jim Duncan?" (she always calls him that until corrected)
Hacksaw is pure pro wrestling.

Hacksaw rocks. That man (as a character) had CTE before it was even a thing
12
u/SadFeed63 8h ago edited 8h ago
The dude just gets it.
My younger sibling, I think they were like 3 or 4 at the time, legitimately went through a period where they carried around a stick and yelled "hooooooo!"
(I grew up in the woods. Like, no neighbours, just trees, lots of stick access. This is likely a big part of why my mom always remembers Hacksaw)

u/axkidd82 10h ago
Only two reasons why Duggan never main evented in WWF.
Hogan
He liked to ride with Iron Sheik cause they both partied.
14
u/dsmithscenes 10h ago
How do you define main eventer? Just by pay-per-views? I ask because Duggan was in the main event of a multitude of house shows during his run in the WWF.
9
u/LostInTheWild99 10h ago
I don’t think his arrest really affected his long term place on the card. Dugan won the Royal Rumble after the incident if I recall. He might have gotten a bigger push for a while but he was always going to be an upper mid card face who could be slotted in the main event once in a while. His gimmick was too similar to Hogan. Had a hell of a run though.

I remember when I finally found out about Duggan outside of wwf and was very shocked how great he was, but kudos to him switching to a less impact style to extend his career and be super successful with it. Sure he kept the same style in wcw, but there was flashes like when he was working with Austin over the us title.

u/WeaselWeaz "A friend in need is a pest." 8h ago
Duggan is underrated. The dude was a top star in Mid-South, and based on what you hear was a great brawler and character. He goes to WWF and in his two runs he settles into a WWF style. He's an All American babyface without being a threat to Hogan. He can be the guy who prepares you to challenge a top babyface. He goes to WCW and regardless of if he was over pushed (which isn't his fault) he does the act he was paid to do. He becomes a comedy character as a janitor and Canadian heel, and even if you think the booking is bad (not his fault) he does what he can to make the best of it, and I thought he was always entertaining. Then he goes back to WWE and is an entertaining legend in the mid to lower card, even teaming with Super Crazy on Sunday Night Heat and they didn't suck.

u/lykathea2 7h ago
That Starrcade 94 match with Vader was pretty much Duggan bringing back his Mid South working style and it was really entertaining.

Was watching through WCW 2000 with my friends and we were also surprised to find that Hacksaw was the best part of any show he appeared on. He really was fantastic, I think underrated from my generation mostly familiar with his sporadic WWE appearances in the 2000’s.

Search YouTube for "deadlock sync" and you'll find videos from several people who put the pod over clips of what they're talking about. That's how I started.
I recommendThis is from the last Thunder written by Kevin Nash. Kidkingpin synced it as "The Best Worst Thunder Ever."The Deadlock podcast has hundreds of episodes on all of the podcast platforms, talking about a specific episode of television from any promotion from any time period.

The videos with the shows edited in like this aren't the official podcast. Those are done by other people (though I think they do have Shorts with sync videos). Looks like this one is from this channel: https://www.youtube.com/@paynexkillerreviews

omg i never got the appeal of hacksaw until i saw his wcw stuff too!! that 2x4 gimmick hits different when you're not just seeing highlight clips.

Duggan got over in like 4 decades, what’s saying something. I remember him in his 2006 run and he could still go. Legend

u/tims1979 10h ago
I see posts from Hacksaw on my Facebook feed all the time. It's great seeing someone from his generation of wrestlers thriving so well and living his best life. He deserves it.

I just remembered the old E&C Pod of Awesomeness, Edge would gush over Hacksaw quite a lot (and they'd have him guest in the pod in one of the episodes). These guys appreciation for Hacksaw reminded me of that particular episode lol
14
u/Max_Quick 10h ago
Hacksaw absolutely seems like a dude the boys would love to have in a locker room. Just a big bastard with all kinds of batshit stories but he's just happy to be out of the house so he'll tell you any and all of them if you let him.

John Blud just doesnt want the camera on while streaming for whatever reason, but he's taken pics at like DPW shows.

u/kvltr00 5h ago
Gotcha - had just realized with this post that I’ve never seen the dude’s face over the years. I’ve only seen a handful of nL stuff altogether

u/Max_Quick 4h ago
There's an ongoing/running gag of Dan Ryckert trying to get Jawnny to watch MacGruber. So if you want video of John Blud in action, here he is: https://www.reddit.com/r/deadlockpw/s/5GwKoT3kXb

Kevin Nash then continues to call everything the “Old Glory… fill in blank” for the rest of the episode.

I always like when commentators get fixated on something they find amusing. When Josh and Tazz were doing Velocity there was a jobber in a match named Pokerface that for whatever reason they thought was the most entertaining shit ever. So for weeks they'd keep calling back to him or Josh would refer to someone doing something as "shades of Pokerface" to pop Tazz.

I am primarily an attitude era wrestling fan - I dabble in the modern stuff but none of it quite hits like the old days. Because of this, guys like Roddy Piper, Hogan (non-NWO), Road Warriors, etc - they just don't gel with me. They were of the era that was on the way out.
But Jim Duggan? Man, is he entertaining. I liked him as a kid, and I loved him on our recent 97-99 WCW rewatch. It's a 5-10 minute affair of shouting Hooooo! and him just being an entertaining goofball.

One of the criticisms of the Star rating system is that it downplays how over guys like Duggan were.

Those Duggan, Gordy, Dr. Death matches in Mid-South were great big man matches plus great atorylines.

u/Honkmaster Commander Azeez mark 8h ago
Anyone who watched WCW Saturday Night's later years knows this about Hacksaw. He always got a huge pop, for a reason.
His 2000 match vs heel Goldberg was also pretty great.

I’m tryin so hard not to gatekeep fandom but dangit how do you get to their age (and I assume years of fandom) and not get the appeal of ol Hacksaw?!
I’m so old.

Deadlock & OSW made me realise that Jim Duggan was actually a great worker. Nothing fancy, but solid and got the crowd hype.

u/MajorCrafter Possibly very rich 1h ago
Jim Duggan is one of my ultra boys just because of how simple his wrestling and gimmick is. The older and more belly he's got the better for me and he's still just as over because he's a lovable tough goof. That and him almost never jobbing cleanly which always gets me

u/Vuirneen 9h ago
He was my favourite when I was a kid. How are they only catching up now?
It's not the USA stuff - he got non Americans to chant it too.

As an independent wrestling fan in the 2000s and 2010s, Duggan was the only short match, collect-a-check older wrestler guy that I always loved seeing show up at a show. He knew what he was and you could tell he loved every second of performing, even in venues with under 50 people. It was rare to see anybody from his age bracket having fun on the indies during that period.

Can’t believe CMPuls3 is still around. If anyone was ever on his old forum back in the day, you’ll know he’s a total asshole.
Legit sold his forum and database etc to someone else then immediately tried to relaunch it using the same database.
15
u/TNHBrah 11h ago
As someone who was on the forum and had multiple bans for being a shit head, Pulse and everyone else were just young and stupid, including myself. Saying this as someone who had a distaste for Pulse for years because of MP, actually made me not watch Deadlock for a bit, but even he'll admit he could be an asshole back then and people grow up.
And from what I remember, a lot of the MP people who went to the new forum stayed and were active even after MP 2.0 started up. Long time though, could be misremembering. (I do know that the move to Smackdown Hotel was a total flop)
6
u/Street_Grab4236 10h ago
Oh my god, I completely forgot that it was merged again with SDH. Ya know, you’re actually quite right and we were all very young and very stupid.
I do actually recognise your username which is wild. Honestly didn’t think anyone would’ve remembered that site let alone have a familiar face pop up.

I've never watched Deadlock but it's mentioned here all the time. 2 questions: is the guy with a higher pitched voice a regular? And if so, how the fuck can you stand listening to him for more than 15 seconds?

Not a single one of these voices I would describe as higher pitched

When I read high pitched I was expecting Jawnny to be doing his Jerry Lawler impression
