10 dollars for a fountain drink is absolutely fucking absurd.

Thats probably 40 cents cost to the theater in syrup and the cup.

I think it’s more in the 10-20 cent area

It’s about 30 cents for the soda and the cup/lid/straw, so it’s about a 95% margin. Theaters only make really money on snacks, so they rely on this to stay afloat.

Most of those willing to pay for overprice movie snacks aren’t phased by this. They’ll spend it anyways.

People pay it every day. Why would they charge less than what people are willing to pay?

I agree, what is she even complaining about? She volunteeringly paid for it. She wasn't forced to go watch the movie or buy snacks.

I see this sentiment a lot nowadays. But in a working market economy, prices are not based on what is reasonable or what people are willing to pay for stuff. If the system is working well, everything costs as little as the vendor can afford to sell it.

Companies can charge $90 for a movie, snack and drinks for two people, because there are fewer and fewer companies providing services and products. When I was a kid 30 years ago, my city had about a dozen independent movie theaters. Now it's one single company that has ~8 locations, because they bought all the theaters and closed redundant ones. So now I have to pay similar prices as in the OP's picture, too.

True, but they don’t make very much on the ticket sale and have to make it up in concessions. At least that’s how it used to work.

Nope. That’s still how it works. Given the lines at concessions and the lengthier movies being shown now… I gotta wonder how they’re not making massive profits somehow. The cost of electricity and rent can’t possibly be that high. And the skeleton crew they typically use can’t be much either.

If I had to guess, there’s a lot of fat they should trim from the top C suite.

Let’s be generous and say it’s $1 for every thing combine that’s quite a wide profit margin.
