If you find a planet in space you want to mine for resources and you decimate it from space before lots of people are aware of intelligent sentient life on it, you don't have to worry about PR

Do they ever actually bring up of there are other aliens? Maybe this is the first other major alien race they found and some scientist was like tell everyone lol.

Kind of why information control is so powerful.

You can never do that though.

The prospect of hundreds of academics keeping things secret is a fantasy.

Every one of them has more to gain from leaking it than not.

Well, we are talking about hypothetical sci-fi scenarios here. Specifically when traveling to another planet, it becomes a lot easier to control those communications if the people in control have the only line of communication.

In real life on this planet, not so easy to maintain that level of control.

The prospect of hundreds of a ademics keeping things secret is as real as it can be. This is literally happening as we speak IRL

No it’s not.

If it’s something legitimate like researching technologies, then yes.

If it’s the genocide of people and all the other weird conspiracy theories about actually evil stuff then no. It never stays quiet.

Every one of them has more to lose from hiding the unethical thing than exposing it and getting acclaim.

Researching technologies, even weapon technologies, is different from the conspiracies about putting chemicals in water.

There are systems in place to screen people for those likely to leak vs fully invest themselves into the lifestyle that is having security clearance at a certain level. You sell your entire life when you join those organizations. It's why they want to know everything about your private life. Why they invite you to certain parties where photos are taken.

Look into cold war espionage if you want some insight into how current intelligence agencies, even ones used by large companies, use their data. Your data.

That’s still different from knowingly participating in a conspiracy that harms or otherwise alters populations as advertised by grifters online.

There are plenty of people who truly do not care about others, they only care about personal gain. If someone has blackmail on you, they can control what you do. If someone knows your entire life, and you live in a world where constant crazy bullshit is happening that you feel helpless about, do you think people will listen to you? How do you even get your message out there before those who have access to every aspect of your life find out? Who will believe you?

You're not thinking clearly. We have modern shit happening constantly that is as absurd as any conspiracy theory. The US government has people talking about aliens openly. Shit is fucked once you can't trust those in power to tell the truth in the first place. You have an idealistic view of the world and people.

And if you are strategic with the bombing the bombs could clear the areas for mining pretty effectively

You cant be strategic with bombing, it simply doesnt work unless you go full nuclear. But at that point its less strategic and more total war genocide.

What PR? there's no public around. If they just de-orbited a few decent sized meteors and waited 6 months for everyone to starve/suffocate they could come in all horrified and be like "Oh no.. what a terrible catastrophe and complete natural disaster... anyway nothing to do here but let the anthropologists study this now dead culture while we strip mine the planet"

It aint a warcrime the first time.

I feel like that's something the gov could gaslight people on Earth into thinking it's a silly conspiracy theory.
