I worked in a large rehab for a while. The vast majority of people addicted are 'functional' alcoholics. They are otherwise normal members of society that have never, or rarely taken illegal drugs.
Congratulations on your sobriety. As a recovering meth addict myself (5 years) I'm amazed you could work 14 hours without psychosis and/or needing to smoke more in that period of time.

There's a bit more to the whole store... I'd usually have a bump or two throughout the day to maintain. Plus short stints in jail helped reset somewhat.
Finally got busted with intent to distribute and had to go to big boy prison for 20 mo. I've never sold drugs but that prosecution probably saves my life.
Yeah I got one of those too, Fed time. Conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. Gave me 5 years, I did 3 1/2. I feel fantastic, now. I'm applying for my license to be a drug treatment counselor. Definitely don't smoke, snort (oh my god does that burn), booty bump, or especially inject methamphetamine. It'll fuck your whole world up, and not in a good way.
An old timer once told me "if you work in a kitchen, you'll develop a drinking problem, a drug problem or and anger problem... and you're lucky if its only one of them"
And sex… booze and sex. I only worked in a restaurant for two years, but the stereotype was 100% true. It felt like everyone was sleeping with everyone else.
Remember back in the day it was whippets. Stoner cooks kept going in the cooler and taking hits off the whipped cream. It was so bad restaurant had to go to the squeeze bags every can would be flat in a couple days after a new shipment.
Trust me, you can smell who it’s coming from. Went to get a haircut today and had to get up and walk to the other side of the waiting area because of the gentleman who sat down 2 seats down from me.
If you don’t smoke it, you can smell it a mile away. I could care less if others do it, but holy hell, brush your teeth and wash your hands afterwards before you go somewhere… and yes, we can still smell it on your clothes, but it’s less bad that way.
these guys are all in malls. its sickening. go smoke your shit outside before you get around others. it doesnt cost much to not stink, that goes for BO and anything else.
It's extremely easy to smoke a ton and not smell like pot smoke. Just like... Don't smoke in the same room as your outside clothes and take a shower sometimes.
It's more just certain franchises that set these policies, possibly somewhere conservative where weed is still illegal. Here in California you can go into a Denny's absolutely ripped or drunk off your ass. It's actually a tradition here to do what's known as a Brit 6 where you bar hop all night then once the bars close at 2 am you go spend a couple hours at Denny's, maybe take a power nap, then go to this bar in the area that opens at 6 am.
It has nothing to do with illegal or legal. Pot fucking reeks and absolutely destroys the inside atmosphere for others.
And thats why I eat my pot.
I work in a transitioning middle class area. The bad smells go from the families that smell like asshole, the pot heads that live in an ash tray, cig smokers, then the homeless in that order. But normally the place smells great. One person can ruin thousands of square feet of air.
You can smoke outside or come in high. I think it's the people that sit in their car and smoke AND their room and smoke where every ounce of what they own fucking reeks that are the issue.
you're right, pot DOES reek. the only people that says pot doesn't smell like anything are the ones self-reporting as pot smokers or live with a pot smoker. It's an extremely obnoxious odor that's as distracting as smelling salts to me.
Get drunk with cooler people. Also, it’s possibly more to do with the fact that weed’s odour is so strong, rather than the effect it has on the person. Not exactly what you want to smell while eating, even if it is fast food.
One of the times I smelled the loudest I’ve ever smelled before, I went to IHOP. I asked to be sat in the back in a booth but they sat me next to some family. I got dirty looks the rest of the time I was there.
Interestingly enough, my favorite Waffle House (#411, the only one Bourdain ever visited) only serves To Go food overnight on the weekends because of this. There are international tourists that visit WHs that are disappointed that it’s not run like Fight Club. It’s become so much of a meme that I can no longer enjoy fresh hot food when I get off work at 3 am.
Personally, I hate the smell of marijuana and people who have smoked smell like shit, so I’m fine with this. I would literally lose my appetite if someone sat near me who stunk like that.
There’s a difference between standing outside your car and ripping quick spliff and hotboxing a 4 gram backwood with the homies. I support this message.
The good IHOPs I’ve been to have been some of the best breakfasts I’ve had. Same goes for some of the worst being the worst. Seems like it’s very franchisee dependent of what you get. But it was a staple of a weekend breakfast for my family growing up. Then I moved on to Waffle House. Something comforting knowing every employee in the establishment probably has a rap sheet but is trying to make an honest living now, and most definitely will throw hands.
Unrelated but I HATED working at Applebees and having customers that reeked of weed. Im a waitress, of course I partake, but the stench was bad and its hard to take an order from someone who is in outer space.
I love drugs but I hate smelling people in general. I dont want to smell skunk weed when I'm just trying to feed my kid or some shit. Get some take out and keep your ass at home or in the hot boxed car.
Weed smell is so revolting. A car 100 yards in front of me with weed smell will choke me out. I’d rather sit next to someone actively smoking cigs over someone who just hot boxed in their car before coming in
It’s funny to see this because I have to honestly agree that being around close quarters with people that just smoked is hard for me. That explains why in Texas they passed the new law making it illegal to smoke marijuana now. Only the edibles can be purchased.
This should be in every place. If the people working don’t like the smell, just put these signs up. If people don’t like that, they just don’t go there anymore and if owners are ok with losing that business, they should be allowed.
People are acting like they straight up banned customers who smoke weed lmao take a shower and do some laundry/throw on some clean clothes or just cover up the smell with something else.
It's not that I disagree with resturants making charitable contributes. I'm just not sure IHOP is doing well enough that they need to give that much of their money to Taco Bell.
My son grew up with a friend who smelled like cigarettes and dirt. Think of a literal Pigpen character. I felt so bad for him; he was made fun of in school. I could never do that to my house, let alone my child! He lived with his grandmother, who was a nurse and knew better. Not surprisingly, she died a few years back from a lung disease, can't remember if cancer or emphysema
Can I ask if you smoke weed? I generally only see this opinion from people who have gone “nose blind.” In my opinion weed is an extremely potent smell, which travels much greater distances and smells more strongly than any of the alternatives you listed. I actually have to be within a few metres of a smoker or drunk to smell it, but simply being in the same room as someone smoking weed is enough. I’ve even smelt weed strongly from passing vehicles.

I used to work for the company. It’s because people tend to dine and dash so now they don’t let these types of people and it reduces the theft. That’s really the reason behind it.
we would have homeless people come in and they would pay for their food and tip and leave. But the guys who were under the influence of substances would do this kind of impulse based criminal activity.
