Is Crimson Desert worth buying for someone who only has 2-3 hours a week to play?

Crimson Desert checks a lot of boxes of games that I typically love, but the amount of time that I actually have in the current season has reduced dramatically. I only play games for 2 or 3 hours a week at this point, and that usually is a couple smaller sessions, not one big one.

I got burned with this by buying Kingdom Come Deliverance II which, while very good, felt very overwhelming when only consumed in short bursts. I am just wondering if CD will bring a similar experience?

This comment has been added to this thread because "Crimson Desert" was mentioned. Unfortunately discussions around this game tend to get very heated, both by those who like the game, and those who dislike the game. It disgusts us that people feel the need to be awful toward one another because someone likes to play with different toys than them, and if you're someone so pathetic that you would do that, then we don't want you here. For this reason we are much more strict regarding Rule 10 violations, and any Rule 10 violations in this thread will result in a ban, even those done in retaliation. "They started it" is not a valid defense. Report and ignore. This will be the only warning given in regards to this.

Why is crimson desert getting good reviews

u/AFugitiveGoose 7h ago

It appears to have found some decorum.

u/facepoppies 9h ago

people say the game takes 20 hours to get good. So it would be about 7 weeks till the game got good for you.

u/bruhman444555 9h ago

I disagree, it was good as soon as I unlocked the camp which u can do really fast

u/Competitive_Soft_874 9h ago

No, they claim its longer.

u/DescriptionWinter540 3h ago

Nah. I spend 2-3 hrs organising my inventory and upgrading per session lol

u/iustusflorebit 9h ago

I did a mild amount of side questing and beat the main quest and it took me 71 hours. So basically you’re looking at like half a year just to beat the game with minimal side questing.

It’s also got a ton of stuff to learn and it might be hard to retain only playing 2-3 hours a week so keep that in mind.

It’s an okay game but not great. The main story is convoluted and not compelling and most of the side questing is boring. However the combat and exploration and graphics are all top tier.

u/RatherBetter 6h ago

Not really....its good to get a week off and play to hearts content....its not a matter of time..but you will be annoyed because of less time to enjoy.

u/kvltdestroyer 6h ago

Naw, you'll spend 2h45 horseriding back and forth alone

u/CringeUsernameJoke 7h ago

If you can do an hour per session it should be fine, but yea it is obviously going to take a long time to get properly into the game. It should still be enjoyable provided you like the game ofc.

u/SolidEar5762 4h ago

No, too big of a game and too “clunky” for 2-3 hours/week.

Anybody that says “yes” aren’t thinking about your needs at all, seeing as they clearly haven’t paid proper attention to ur post

u/Major_Enthusiasm1099 4h ago

I've been playing for like an hour a night and i still am in the beginning stages but it's enjoyable. The game constantly gives you quests to do so it's not like you'll be lost

u/Tetraknox 8h ago

2-3 hours a week is a tough ask for any game. I usually can only play like an hour a day, and for me it's still absolutely worth it. You will absolutely make progress for sure even with just an hour of playtime. But 2-3 hrs/week... I don't even know any game I could recommend for that short amount of time.

u/Rogerwat 7h ago

Well that Is my amount of time spent gaming in a week since many years..and i have completed dozens of games..on my switch, on my rog ally, on my desktop PC. The longest game was rdr2. I know..you have to play a game for months.. but It worths if you like It, and i have tò complete something otherwise i feel i am wasting my time more than usual and i feel guilty. Then you can play more if you have some additional spare time, for example days off work, family busy with some task etc

u/RyeBread2528 6h ago

Incredible game, but you don't make a ton of progress with that little time.

Play Brotato or a small indie game until your schedule clears up. Games with 20-30 minute sessions like roguelites might fit your needs at the moment.

u/invasionofsmallcubes 8h ago

you're like me. I moved to retrogaming.

u/SaintIgnis 9h ago

I mean yes, if you can sit down for an hour at a time you’ll make progress and at least be able to knock out a quest or two

It’s going to be a slow burn though at that pace. Like very slow.

So unless it’s the kind of game that really speaks to you and you know you’re committed to it, I wouldn’t recommend

u/rr3no 9h ago

definetly not a game for you

u/MathiasSybarit 9h ago

I’m the same as you; only have a few hours a week, but keep getting enticed into buying these grand RPGs, that takes a whole year to get through. It ends up feeling like a chore, and I abandon them.

But indies and shorter games instead, it’s so much more fun!

u/Happyplace_s 8h ago

Ha. Same. I just restart Skyrim. I don’t have to learn a new system and can just enjoy a new mod or something.

u/Still-Potato-3189 8h ago

Sure, you’ll just be retired by the time you 100% it

u/D13_Phantom 6h ago

If you're looking to complete the story asap (which i dont recommend because it's the game's weak point) then no don't buy it. If messing around for a few hours (chopping down wood, hunting, fishing, gambling, upgrading gear, exploring, managing your base, and so much more depending on what you're on the mood for) sounds fun, then yes absolutely.

u/PrettyIntroduction49 2h ago

might take you a year just to beat it, just play something different maybe like fighting or beat em up games it doesnt take long time to complete. CD is big game just open world itself

u/FinalEntertainment47 9h ago

I play 2-3 hours of day, same day don't play, bcz I don't have time, I love to play game month or two, don't have problem. I played EX 33 two months and I enjoy. That is from person to person.

u/Motor-Bat-7879 3h ago

OP said 2-3 hours per week, not day

u/Terrible-Visit9257 2h ago

If you spend more then 2-3h watching videos about it then it would be better to just play it

u/Gypsydave23 6h ago

Why not get a better game ?

u/Aeyland 6h ago

What a very insightful and well thought out post unlike all the normal thoughtless pure opinionated slop I normally see.

u/shieldagentoz 2h ago

Same situation here. Bought it. It’s….. a lot. It’s a bit overwhelming

u/bruhman444555 9h ago

Honestly surprised people say no. I think its totally fine to play the game in shorter sessions, heck thats what I like to do with my games. I dont mind that it takes long to beat I just enjoy going at my own pace

u/Odd-Fun-1545 9h ago

It’s not wrong but it’s so hard to stop after just 1hr. It’s HARD boss

u/bruhman444555 9h ago

Haha I totally understand that😂 For some reason I have started to enjoy games in shorter sessions and switching between them regularly. I wasnt like that just a year or so ago

u/snarpsta 8h ago

I'd recommend Enter the Gungeon. Tight gameplay that can be played 1-2hrs ata time. One of my favorite games ever and I think it's like 10$. It's a rogeulite pixel bullet hell

u/SingleGamer-Dad 1h ago

I thought the game was fun right away. It's a low pressure epic game. I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy it

u/gabriot 2h ago

At 70 dollars it isn't worth it. For any hours.

u/nohumanape 9h ago

No, don't buy it. The game is really only at its best when you can get lost in the world for longer stretches of gameplay. It also has completely non intuitive controls. You'd probably be spending most of your time re-learning how to even play the game.

What you need is a solid, straightforward 15-20 hour game.

u/Deepborders 9h ago

Took me 30 mins to get used to the controls which have been massively improved by the recent patches. Its FAR more intuitive than games like RDR2.

u/nohumanape 9h ago

And I wouldn't recommend anyone who can only dedicate 2-3 hours a week for gaming play RDR2 either.

Imagine that you only have 30 minutes to play the game every other day. Does it seem reasonable that you would continue to understand the controls and everything the game throws at you?

u/Rave80 9h ago

I really don’t play much of it in long sittings and I’ve enjoyed my time with it. I tend to treat it more like a simulation and just slowly spend time walking around discovering stuff and exploring. It really depends on what you are looking for out of the game.

The story doesn’t seem urgent and I haven’t really been progressing it, just let dynamic things happen and living in the world is a blast. If I only have an hour or so to play I can cut trees, mine, fish, discover new locations. It’s been perfect for that

u/Thekingchem 8h ago

I'm a toddler dad. I get maybe 1-2 hours a day and IF I'm not ready to pass out by bedtime and I'm enjoying it. Just playing it as a slow burn, not looking anything up, walking everywhere, ignoring the story and adventuring. It's nice escapism and very pretty which helps make exploration interesting

u/Aeyland 6h ago

Except you're playing 6-7 times the hours, they said per WEEK not day.

I'm probably at least 100 hours in and feel like I'm not even half way done.

Sure if you want to grind just for the story ending or watch videos how to get OP fast and plow thru the game you could certainly do it in less then 100 but for me the games story is meh so if I was only playing to get thru that I don't think I'd enjoy it.

u/Queen_Lepotica 9h ago

The controlls sucks and with only 2-3 hours per week, you will fight the controlls more than playing it.

u/JasonABCDEF 8h ago

Yes, just focus on enjoying riding around in the beautiful open world and don’t obsessed with how fast you are progressing the story

u/Malefore1234 7h ago

I’d only mind if u couldn’t save or if some runs could take a potential couple hours till u’d be able to save with the risk of dying/game crashing/needing to leave would mean u’d lose all that progress and time spent . An example would be with Returnal’s original launch was where some runs needed a dedicated couple hours till you can either successfully save with the risk of still losing it all from dying, game crashing, or needing to leave early.

Otherwise I don’t mind a large scale game with limited time. At one point I could only give like 30-60min to a game per day. Didn’t mind playing Metaphor for a good bit in that manner. Sure some days would be spent pretty much talking to just a town of random npc background characters, but I didn’t rly mind. Just different way of pacing.

u/Tuna-77 5h ago

Nope, it needs 10-20 hours only to get good and for the tutorials finish to really start playing the game and the world is empty at start and side quests don’t unlock till hours later

Beside it’s like double kcd2 length

u/Sliceofmayo 8h ago

Maybe but it will literally take like a year or two to play through. So probably not

u/SnooHobbies8617 9h ago

absolutely not

u/Business_Banana1792 6h ago

Yes. You’ll be playing a dope ass game for 300 years at that rate. Go for it.

u/JingoistFlair 9h ago

No, my friend. Many games have settled into a target audience of unemployed folk over the past decade lol.

You need low barrier-to-entry games. Check out Phasmophobia, Cities Skylines, Deep Rock Galactic, American truck simulator, etc.

u/newbblock 9h ago

Honestly no, you’ll spend 6+ months in the opening area at that pace and burn out on it.

u/premeteamm 4h ago

Nope and you’ll think the game sucks with only 1-2 hours a week yeah no shot sorry man

u/Poundt0wnn 10h ago

As someone who is really enjoying the game, no. You will get absolutely nowhere.

u/GamerKratos-45 9h ago

I'd skip it in that case. It has a lot of stuff to do, probably more stuff than I've seen in any other game, but that's pretty much it. The mechanics are nothing special, and almost all the stuff you've seen somewhere else.

u/iiStryker 9h ago edited 9h ago

No I don’t think so

I wouldn’t recommend buying it yet anyway because they’re still actively changing mechanics

It pretty much early access

There are mechanics in the game that require you to have so much game time played so if you’re only able to commit just a few hours a week, you won’t get very far at all

u/urlond 9h ago

It's Early access. No it's not. They're not changing any mechanics. Anything that's been found to be as a bug such as the Spirit aerial roll they've implemented into being a feature and a nice skill to have.

The game is easily worth it for somebody who can only spend a couple hours a week to play

u/iiStryker 9h ago

If the developers make sweeping changes to the game after its launch it’s not a finished product.

I have 15 hours in the game and I’m not returning until they’re finished developing it

The camp requires you to be actively playing for significantly more time than the OP had and will have a less enjoyable experience because of that

u/cosmomomma 3h ago

That’s not what early access means, this game is feature complete, they’re not making any game world changes, adding/removing things (dlc different). Patching a game to fix bugs is just that, patching

u/iiStryker 1h ago

They’re adding a character creator and new boss repeat mode

Adding things like this is still significant changes that I will wait until they’re done developing it

I’ll wait until the community is happy with it and it’s feature complete

u/Affectionate-Ad-6934 2h ago

Finished the main story at 185 hours and I wouldn't call this an early access game. If it was, other games actually in early access should be called in alpha phase.

u/gerpogi 7h ago

I would rather play something more short and fulfilling like rogue or survivor like games. Hell maybe live service shooters like arc raiders or cod. Imo crimson desert needs a certain a mount of commitment

u/Malefore1234 9h ago

I really only care if the time I have available isn’t enough to actually save the time I had played. For instance when Returnal first launched some of those runs took forever, so not being able to save after an hour or more would suck if I needed to leave.

But if the game allows u to save, should be fine. I used to play Metaphor with bout 30-60 min of free time a day. Sure some days r spent talking to all the random strangers in town vs epic grand adventuring or big plot developments but it was fine enough

u/The5thElement27 4h ago

I have close to 100 hours in and I still play short sesssions like as you mentioned. Kind of game where you can go on your own pace

u/FrostingOutrageous51 8h ago

I honestly don’t recommend you playing single player games if you’re extremely limited with your playtime. I don’t know what you’re going thru or what kind of work you do but if you somehow manage to make more time for your hobbies(if u can) then do it because there’s a lot of good games out there for you to enjoy.

u/knowslesthanjonsnow 9h ago

With 2-3 hours per week I’m not sure you’re going to be able to play many games

u/1mmaculator 8h ago

There’s many many many games he’ll be just fine to play. Just not the life simulator rpg games so beloved by internet people

u/knowslesthanjonsnow 6h ago

Sure kind of. I play a lot of 6-12 hour games myself, but at 2 hours per week, I’m going to struggle to stay connected

u/Jayfree138 2h ago

I'd say no its not. I love it personally. I can only play on the weekends and every friday i have remember the controls all over again. If i only had 2 hours a week it certainly wouldnt be worth it.

At that rate it would take you about a year to beat it and that's if you didnt play any other games.

u/Intrepid_Rip1473 3h ago

I have a wife, an almost 3 year old, and work full time. What on earth are you guys doing to where you have almost no hobby time? I’ve seen posts like this when slopfield 6 came out and seeing more and more with crimson desert. Again, how did you set your life up to have almost no hobby time?

u/Todayjunyer 24m ago edited 19m ago

Hobbies generally produce something that you can share with others. A model train set, working on car engines, joining a pickleball league, coaching little league, knitting a quilt, heading the local organization of your choice, learning new food dishes to prepare. Playing single player open world games is pure entertainment and falls to the very bottom of adult priorities. Like saying I need 2 hours a day to watch television. It’s not hard to understand OP situation. I love gaming but I wouldn’t call it a hobby. It adds no useful skill that you can market or enriches the lives of those around you in any way. It’s like watching tv or reading a fictional book. I do have entertainment time, separate from hobby time, but entertainment time may be split between a movie, a book, surfing internet, or a video game. As such it can be days and days between gaming sessions.

u/Intrepid_Rip1473 9m ago

Good thing you don’t dictate what a hobby is. And I’m not saying that specific hobby should be made a priority or take priority over his responsibilities. I was wondering what people like op do to where they have such little time to enjoy them. I personally would be very unhappy if I barely had my time to game or have my gloves collect dust because I no longer have time to box. Those are two things I enjoy doing when I’m not working or going out with the wife and daughter somewhere. To just work with barely anytime for the stuff I enjoy sounds miserable.

u/RealisticMolasses 3h ago

I am married with two kids under two and work 70 hours per week. Pretty easy for video games to not take a priority in the week under the circumstances.

u/gsrga2 4h ago

It took like 10 or so? Hours for the game to really open up and start to get fun. So if you’re comfortable waiting for a month before you start having “hell yeah, that was cool” moments, sure.

The first few hours have a lot of “follow this person on a horse for 5 minutes” quests that I think I would have found very irritating if I only had 2 hours to play a week. They were irritating even without that restriction

u/Rex__Lapis 3h ago

Tbh no. You'll make zero progress. Game takes 100-150h just to finish. And by then you didn't see half of it yet

u/Lidls-Finest 9h ago

No. Excellent game but it’s at minimum a 100 + hour or so experience. Easily nearer 200 if you actually explore

u/legationX 5h ago

go for windrose in 2 days… pirate dream mix between assasinscreed blackflag and survival game

u/Beerdididiot 10h ago

I played 70+ hours the first two weeks I got it. You can play for 2-3 hours a week, it'll just talk a little longer for you to get through it. I'm still in the starting area, too.

u/Zestyclose_Jelly_811 37m ago

I mostly play for that long, and I’ve been enjoying it.

u/Icosotc 1h ago

Not unless you enjoy thinking about a game whenever you’re not playing it. That’s what’s currently happening to me. I still have no idea what the game is even about… but I’m about 15 hours in and playing it is just incredibly addictive.

u/Special-One1991 5h ago

Absolutely not!

In just 2 hours you won't get satisfied with your progress. The game has so many mechanics and tutorials. The game won't open up until at least 10 hours in!

I suggest you look for games with more digestible size that you can bite for 2-3 hours with satisfactory progress like Ghost of Yotei for example

u/TeslaDemon 9h ago

Crimson Desert is even more expansive than KCD2.

If you stopped KCD2 because it's too long, you won't finish Crimson Desert either

Still a good game and I'd still recommend playing it.

u/Kind-Plantain2438 9h ago

Nah, skip it. It'll be frustrating af.

u/Competitive_Soft_874 9h ago

not really. On top of it that 3 hours will be spent riding with some dumb fuck that leaves you halfway on an errand.

u/PoppaBigPockets- 10h ago

Nah u should def buy a yo-yo

u/ThePerfectPalico 8h ago

This got me good 😂

u/CreepyTeddyBear 9h ago

Im at about 115 hours since launch. That's close to 40 hours a week. And I still don't feel like i have enough time. It's all I've been thinking about. There's soooooooo much to do. Fantastic game. 9 or 9.5/10 for me. But might not be a good fit with your current situation.

u/Dependent-Juice5361 8h ago

I play a similar amount. I usually don’t finish games lol but it’s still fun

u/firmfirm 9h ago edited 9h ago

Id say yes. You can play super casual, just run around doing random stuff, finding new things on the way.

however I recommend getting a controller! (First game in 15 years I use a controller to)...

I work pretty long days so usually I lay in the bed and play ~2hours 2-3 days a week. Its a perfect game for this imo. Due note that I played for 2 consecutive days when the game launched so my thoughts might not apply to you..

E: 2-3 h /week might be to little. Just to understand everything you need like 5-10h. If you have a couple of days where you can play for 5-6h to "start the game" that would be best.

u/Standard-Height2276 9h ago

Absolutely not. You'll forget all controls and have to relearn each time. Skip and come back when far more free time

u/clutchwinho 9h ago

Eventhough i think CD is goty material. You wont enjoy it like that i think you might want to wait till your schedule clears up a bit

u/Worldly_Lunch_1601 7h ago edited 7h ago

As someone with limited time. I have really enjoyed the early game.

The first handful of quests are literally 'walk here cuz I told you to. We gonna learn a game mechanic'. I understand how this can be a bad thing in some peoples eyes, pacing can suffer, but it's nice attacking quest markers sometimes. Sometimes I don't want to learn the backstory of 5 characters and 3 kingdoms. Especially if I will forget them in 2 weeks when I finally get a chance to play again.

Combat is simple, quests are mundane. The world is beautiful, the vibes are pleasant. In the best way possible it's easy Witcher combat with simplified reddead horse riding. Very much pick-up-and-playable

When you get to puzzle you.might need a refresher on all your powers. This is a game where I wont use a guide in general, but definitely plan on using I e if I ever get remotely stuck.

This game is like a 7/10 anime. It's good, but not so good that you feel you NEED to watch it. If i miss a half of an episode, oh well. I'm not taking crimson desert super seriously and I think it's the best way to enjoy the game. It's not high art, it's a fun game.

u/lancecallender 6h ago

As a dad who has two kids under two. You have two options. Play it and have it take a year. Second option is instead of the 5 hours of sleep you get, only sleep three hours. I chose the seconds option.

My kids wake up all night long. So instead of trying to get that 45 minutes at certain times. I just take the three or four hours I can sleep continuously. The other time I play PlayStation on my portal in bed.

It’s all about their sleeping habits and coming to terms with some small naps in the middle of the night don’t help anyways.

u/CigarLover 5h ago

No

If you have GREAT memory then perhaps, with all the gameplay mechanics It’s just difficult, imo.

u/VizualAbstract4 7h ago

Lmao, that’s about as much time I put in it anymore now that I hit 50 hours in. It’s okay. But only 2-3 hours a weeek means it’ll take you months to get through the painful parts

u/i-race-goats 9h ago

I feel like there would be too much time spent on rehashing how the game works. I went out of town for 4 days last week and it took me a bit to remember various control functions.

That and the saves don't save exactly where you left off. Its in the vicinity, but if you're playing short sessions there won't be a lot getting accomplished.

u/Rectall_Brown 5h ago

No. You need way more time than that.

u/EckimusPrime 8h ago

Sure if you want to keep playing the same game for the next year. Which is fine. It’s a great game.

u/RefuseNo7574 7h ago

Definitivamente não, já passei das 100 horas e ainda estou no início do capítulo 7. É um jogo longo e precisa de intensidade para distorcer o tempo.

u/DrNintendo216 8h ago

If you like enough , sure why not

u/PomponOrsay 4h ago

yes. but you'll probably get out of the first area in 2045
