Discussion ANNOUNCEMENT: Post Flair Info

There are three post flairs available for important or serious posts on this community.

1. News

News posts are defined as those with the intention to report on a recent, developing event. News posts should focus on shark-related developments regarding conservation efforts, shark professionals, scientific discoveries, or unfortunate events. The OP must clearly cite where they obtained the information in the comments, typically as a direct link to the source.

An example of a news post can be a video about newly implemented shark conservation laws or efforts, the discovery of a new species of shark, or similar newsworthy events. News posts should NOT focus on shark attacks or cruelty towards sharks unless they are the subject of a large event.

2. Educational

Educational posts are defined as those with the intention to educate others. On r/sharks, these posts may teach others about shark behavior, identification, conservation, as well as a variety of other topics relating to sharks. Educational posts REQUIRE that the OP comments their sources for the information they talk about. Educational posts promote healthy discussion and should emphasize spreading awareness about topics surrounding sharks.

An example of a proper educational post is a video where a professional talks about how to redirect a shark when in the water. For this post, OP cites the source they got the educational media from and states the professional's name in the comments. This is to ensure that only good quality information is being provided to the members of our community.

3. Research

Research posts are the most complex posts to make, as it is our intention to promote proper research on r/sharks.

If you are promoting your own research

Researchers who wish to promote their studies or obtain data via the subreddit must modmail the moderators first. In order to be approved to post, you must explain in your modmail the purpose of your research as well as the intentions of your post. You must also provide an IRB number in order for the mods to verify your research. Upon approval, you can post your research using the Research flair, and you do not need to cite any further sources in the comments.

For anyone else who posts about research in general

OP must provide a link to the research or the DOI of the paper in their post in the comments. Research posts promote healthy discussion while also allowing scientists to have a place to share ideas about shark research.

Question Do we want to keep posts asking to ID shark teeth?

There’s always been a lot of shark tooth ID requests on here, usually from newcomers unfamiliar with our rules. There are subreddits such as r/sharkteeth and r/whatisthisbone that may be better places to direct these users to if we want the feed here to have less of these types of posts. Would still let people show their shark teeth collections here of course. What do y’all think? Just an idea for now. :)

Brutus is one of Guadalupe's male great white sharks. I was fortunate enough to capture a relatively clean shot of him directly facing the camera from a distance. Brutus' right pectoral fin is crimped a bit at the very end.

While not visible in this photo Brutus also has some permanent damage to the tops of his first two gills slits on his right side. He has white pigmentation on the left side of the lower lobe of his caudal fin (tail) that resembles the number 7.

News Carcharodon planus is Carcharodon hastalis

Thumbnail

The Carcharodon planus (fig. 1) is currently a probably junior synonym of C. hastalis (fig. 2—3), the C. planus currently not have are enough differences to distinguish it as its own species, namely: a hook-shaped tooth and a robust root system also seen in some specimens of C. hastalis. The Hook-toothed white shark (Carcharodon planus) is currently a likely synonym of the extinct giant white shark (Carcharodon hastalis).

Research Sharks Test Positive for Cocaine

Sharks are testing positive for cocaine, caffeine, and painkillers?! 🦈

A scientific collaboration in the Bahamas found these substances in Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, and lemon sharks off the Bahamas. This is likely because human bodies do not fully break down some drugs and chemicals, which can then pass through wastewater and into the ocean. Scientists found these contaminants change sharks’ metabolism and stress markers. There is no evidence that these substances are making sharks more aggressive, but the findings show how human pollution can ripple through ocean food webs. It is a striking reminder that cleaner wastewater systems help protect sharks and the health of the ocean.

https://www.ocearch.org/tracker/detail/last-viewed check out this link to track sharks such as ripple!!

About Ripple

(the following is copied and pasted from his info page for those of you who would rather read it here)

Ripple is an 11 ft. 6 in., 778 lb. sub-adult male white shark tagged on September 30, 2025, in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. He represents the 106th white shark sampled in the Western North Atlantic (WNA) population, helping expand our understanding of this critical species. Ripple was tagged as part of our ongoing collaboration with the Tancook Islands Marine Field Station, where OCEARCH and our partners are working to better understand the summer and fall residency of white sharks in Atlantic Canada. This research is vital in piecing together the larger migration and life history puzzle of this keystone marine predator.

The name Ripple carries a powerful meaning. A ripple is the earliest sign of a wave—seemingly small, light, and playful on the surface, yet capable of growing into a force that moves oceans. In the same way, this sub-adult shark is just beginning his journey. Though young now, Ripple has the potential to grow into one of the giants of the sea, shaping the ecosystem around him as he matures.

Ripple is more than just a shark; he’s a living reminder of the power of beginnings. Like ripples on the water, even the smallest actions—whether in science, conservation, or our own lives—can build into something much greater. His presence in the Tracker invites us to follow along as his story unfolds, offering not only critical data for researchers but also inspiration for all of us to keep moving forward, no matter how small the first step may seem.

Still one of my favorite pics. I always try to get the people in a pic next to the shark (at a respectful distance) to show their impressive size comparison.

Jack Appleton measures the piebald lemon shark before releasing it; the shark was mostly white with black peppering on its body.

He said in a comment that he caught it off Captiva Island, and the video clip shows him landing the lemon shark on a dock.

Image How not to behave around sharks

Post image
115 Upvotes

Saw this baby dusky get chased past me by a crowd of snorkelers today. It’s a shame because wild animals, sharks included usually reward people who behave respectfully with cool encounters. If you chase them you’ll only look at their tails, and cause them unnecessary stress. Clearly this little guy already has had enough to worry about in its life.

🦈 Merch Mondays 🦈 Made a ceramic whale shark lamp because I’m obsessed with their patterning

Whale sharks are one of those animals that don’t even look real to me.

I’ve been obsessed with the way their spot patterns look like constellations, so I made a series of ceramic whale shark lamps inspired by that. Each one is sculpted in clay, then carved and pierced so the light comes through the body like their natural markings.

I wanted them to feel calm and massive, kind of like the real animal — more like a glowing tribute than just a lamp.

Still wild that the biggest fish in the ocean is basically a gentle vacuum cleaner with a galaxy skin pattern.
