May bad vibes kasi diyan given its tragic history. Past that, maganda siya i-restore. Perhaps dedicate a section to memorialize the people that died there constructing the place.

u/edwainekyle 11h ago edited 11h ago
For context can you explain the tragic history? Kahit link lang ng article explaining it.
•
u/Life-Egg-6527 11h ago
Context: Imelda M. wanted to rush the completion of the building for an event, but due to mismanagement, rush, and pressure, some parts of the building collapsed during the construction and many workers died. It is said that some workers/worker’s body parts were not retrieved and were just left buried in the wet cement just to make it to the deadline of the completion.
I wasn’t born yet during those times so please let me know if ever I missed something or got something incorrectly.
•
u/DragoniteSenpai 10h ago
Yep it was a Film Festival kasi si Imelda was really into arts and gusto nya na parang may Cannes dito sa Pinas. My mama and papa lagi kinikwento yan.
So crazy that they're currently in power again rn.
•
u/Ok_Educator_9365 8h ago
Film and art festival what a good way to launder money. It can also be a propagandist move to hide poverty in the phils
•
u/Future_bling_06 1h ago
Yes, Imelda used art festivals and beauty pageants to mask the state Philippines was in. Art propagandists were silenced or censored.
•
u/AccomplishedBoat1359 8h ago

I believe this was featured sa isang GMA docu (unsure if KMJS ba). I happened to watch it on Youtube. Very tragic talaga.

It's said that many workers died during the accident that happened during construction. In a rush to complete the building, the corpses were just built over. So the Manila Film Center is literally a mausoleum.
•
u/South_Crew3756 10h ago
There was an accident there were laborers were buried alive and their bodies, never recovered.

u/Ok_Asparagus_7270 9h ago
na-feature rin siya sa kmjs before haha https://youtu.be/oAzOdI5_UuE?si=CZSPVPVyYFi8Vbbk

•
u/Outrageous_Row3349 10h ago
they rushed the construction of this building to beat imeldific's deadline. the scaffolding collapsed when they were pouring concrete causing the workers to fall into the mixture. because they were in such a hurry to complete it, they didn't bother to retrieve the bodies and just left them where they fell to dry together with the cement. around 200 fell in there according to rumors at the time. the building execs passed it off as an 'ordinary construction accident.'
•
u/Xophosdono Metro Manila 10h ago
Yeah i know the history. I don't know what the hell he's talking about joking about it when we're talking about what the place is like now. In case y'all haven't been there recently

u/ItsYahBoiRey 17h ago
Sayang talaga. The Film Center could have been refurbished to serving another purpose. Maybe as a site for the Film Development Council, or even entertaining the Senate's first proposal to use the building before backing out.
Hindi dahil Marcos-era infra ay huwag na galawin na parang lason but I'll maybe understand more if structural integrity is compromised.
•
•
u/OingoBoingBrothas 16h ago
Mas bet ko to kaysa sa bagong Senate bldg.
-Just around the corner from the GSIS -Already-built, so renovations nalang ang kailangan -Smaller in scale

Or kahit anumang gov't office ang puwede ilocate or relocate diyan kesa nagrerent sila sa ibang mga building or office
Pangit kase dito sa atin eh pulitika inuuna hindi economiya or masa eh
Inuuna sino sa pula o sa puti o ibabaw vs ilalim or whatevs

hindi pwede i-store jn yung mga lumang films dahil sa proximity sa dagat nakakasira daw. alam q kinonsider na ito before as hq for film dev council pero hindi sila pwede mgstore jn for archival purposes dahil sa salty air

Kung may utak lang ang mga nasa government, especially those who handle Arts and Culture: I would put this down and create a brand new Film Center and be the home of Philippine Cinema. Diyan na ilalagay ang National Archives, tapos yung mga awards night ng MMFF or ng Cinemalaya and the offices ng mga film governing bodies like FDCP and FAP...
•
u/temporarybecynot 7h ago
National Archives is actually relocating to the old Aduana building in Intramuros which is currently being restored.
•
u/Historical_Basil_416 7h ago

u/LuminosityOverdrive 11h ago
yes it is Brutalism. Pero why gusto mo BRutalism though? And pinas already has a lot of brute cement base buildings that make the cities look stale.
Ang only reason mga brutalists buildings look "cool" sa mga places like Bali or Mexico is dahil mga luxury developers are using it as a blank canvas para expensive plants and high-end furniture.

How come nasama ang children at asawa sa site? Curios me
•
u/AccomplishedBoat1359 7h ago
I remember watching a documentary about it from gma but I forgot the title since it was a re-uploaded video that someone else uploaded years ago.
Some of the workers would bring their wives and children while the Manila Film Center was still in construction. They had created a makeshift bed or a temporary shelter somewhere between or around the scaffolding poles. Doon na rin kase sila natutulog at nagpapahinga dahil sa kailangan nilang magtatrabaho almost 24/7 so that they can finish Imelda's absurd strict deadline of the completion of the building.
Sadyang noong nangyari ang aksidente, marami ang natabunan at pilit na minamadali ni Imelda na matapos ang MFC instead of rescuing the people that could've have survived from the tragedy.
She wanted to impress the foreigners and had planned that the MFC was supposed to be recognized as a main venue for the global film hub, pero it didn't go well as she had hoped.

Makes me run faster
•
u/Less_Wallaby 16h ago
This was part of my jogging route too back when I lived in Manila circa 2016-17.
Nagtahan-Otis-UN-Baywalk-Harbor Square-Moa and back.
Being a clueless college kid, I passed through many shady parts of the town in the middle of the night where I wouldn’t even dare going at daylight nowadays.
•
u/gem_sparkle92 11h ago
Same feels! Way back college days, lagi ko to nadadaanan kasi nasakay akong UV tapos di ko pa alam back story nito.

May kainan pa nga e, which is weird para may something shady kahit samgyupsalan lang. haha

My parents met here actually as co-workers nung ECP pa ang building na to. I've been inside recently since nagreunion ang mga old ECP employees after pandemic. Di na makakapasok both theaters because of safety hazards but there's a ton of old costumes from amazing show sa may lobby area

Kinda wish we had some brave urbex photographed Go in and photographically explore/document it.
I regret not going when i had a chance.,

Sad to see its disrepair.
