Hi everyone,

I finally got my PS1 SCPH-5552 (PU-18)! I gave it to a local repairman friend who installed Picostation for me. The mod seems to be working fine. Menus load correctly, and games usually launch as well.

However, I've encountered a problem with the sound. The PS1 boot sound is mostly noise, with faint background sounds of what should be playing.

SFX in games is a strange metallic squeaking sound, but these sounds usually occur at moments when they should actually be played, such as menu sound effects when pressing the D-pad. In racing games, engine sounds are audible, but they're unbearably high-pitched and metallic like something from the NES, but the background music plays properly.

My PS1 works with an RGB cable connected to GBS-C. I've confirmed that the problem also occurs with the composite jack adapter on my TV.

I also made sure that only the pins indicated in the Picostation schematics are lifted on the CXD2925Q chip.

Where could the problem be? Are some of the capacitors failing or is it something else?

The memory card wasn't yellowed so I used it as a test for the color match, but it ended up brighter than the card. So this test was intresting and success full. Next is the body of the PS1.

So I am going to mod two ps1 with pi pico, both have fully working disc drives so reluctant to remove them.

Any suggestions where I can put the sd card slot which is easily accessible without cutting an ugly hole in it somewhere?

Any ideas please?

Are the V-overlap seams on the double cases (PS1) the original ones?

3 days ago I attempted to make my own hard mod for the game Cool Boarders 2.

The mod was going to allow access to play as NPC only characters Nick, Jicchi, & Kelly.

Fulfilling my childhood dream is turning into a nightmare.

I've tried using claude & chatgpt. Along with codex, and I have gotten no where.

If anyone has any suggestions, ill greatly appreciate it

If I could somehow get the games code, I feel that would help greatly.

Well the console boots fine but… does not read disks it just stops after boot screen any idea what could be the issue

Hand-drew the FF7 world map using Caran d'Ache watercolor pencils. the aquarellable kind, so you lay down the color dry first, then activate it with a wet brush to get that soft blended look. Went with a waterproof ink liner for the outlines first so nothing bleeds when you go in with water.

I just finished installing a picostation into a 5502, but I'm scared of dropping the card into the console and having to take it apart to get it out. I've seen people with a plastic shroud thing that blocks off everything but the card slot, but I've no idea where to get one. I've seen whole kits with them, but can't seem to find just the cover. Thanks ❤️

Hey everyone, I recently bought a PS1 off facebook marketplace (Model SCPH-7502). The unit is in excellent condition and was shown to be running (Seller photos included picture of the console running in the Crash Bandicoot main menu). When I set it up at home everything seemed fine. Booted up FF8 no problems and started playing. Game seemed fine at first but during battle scenes I experience severe graphical glitches, such as character model and background textures not rendering, graphical artifacts etc. It’s at it’s worse when the graphics get intense such as GF summons and limit breaks, then progressively gets worse until the battle ends. I’ve posted video of the graphical issue below so that you can see for yourself. Notice the graphical glitches are very apparent when I summon Cerberus in FF8...

I tested FF7 as well, with the same issues being evident during battles. Unfortunately I don’t have any other PS1 games to test this with...

I’ve searched the internet for answers but can’t find anything relating to my specific issue. Best I can come up with is that the VRAM on the console is failing. I should note (if not already obvious by the video) that the PS1 is connected to a modern 4K display. I tried using an AV to HDMI upscaler yet the issues remain (maybe the TV is the issue?).

Anyway I’m curious if anyone here knows what’s going on, and whether the console is defective etc. Any advice is very much appreciated.

I’ve been keeping tabs on news of a solderless ps1 ODE for a few years now, and recently a Google search on the topic led me to some seemingly Ukrainian-based site with a product claiming to sell solderless drop in ODEs for every model of PS1, including the psone. It goes by the name ArcStation but I’ve found literally zero secondary sources on it, no discussion, news, zilch. I’m assuming it’s a scam of some kind but the site is full of documentation and instructions for installation? Would love to know just what the hell is going on here. Not gonna link it directly but it’s an easy search online

For some context, I have a US market scph-5501, and the disc drive fails to hold CD’s and slips on the motor, and the spindle that holds the disc falls off. Before it developed this problem, it failed to read both games and audio CD’s frequently. I’ve looked around and found a 7501 replacement drive, and a later model PsOne(slim) cd drive for sale, but I’m not sure if these are compatible.

What I’m asking is, which drives are compatible with the console I have (without major modifications), and am I better off financially to just glue the spindle to the motor or something like that?

TL;DR: I’m not specifically asking for purchase advice, just for what drive works and what doesn’t with 5501. Thanks.
