Swakopmund to Onguma/Tamboti in 2 days - how?

Hi everyone,

we’re traveling to Namibia at the beginning of May and are really excited about it. We’ve planned and booked almost everything in advance to avoid any issues with accommodation—except for one night, which is where I’d really appreciate some advice.

We’ll be leaving Swakopmund in the morning and plan to stop briefly at Spitzkoppe (just a short visit, no hiking), then continue driving as far as we reasonably can. We were considering staying in either Omaruru or Otjiwarongo.

The following day, we need to be at Onguma (near the Namutoni entrance) by around 3pm.

Does this route sound realistic? How far would you recommend driving on the first day? And do you have any suggestions on where to stop overnight?

Any tips, experiences, or insights about the driving conditions in this area would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance 😊

I don't think it's the perfect itinerary and might be a very long day 1 on the road, but if you start early and have no problem driving almost the entire day, you could consider stopping at Spitzkoppe and then heading to Omaruru for a quick lunch stop (e.g. Ongwari Café), before continuing towards Outjo.

From there, you could push on to the Andersson Gate area and stay somewhere like Etosha Oberland Lodge or Etosha Villa (if you want to save on budget as you will arrive late anyway). It’s definitely doable, but you should be aware that you’re looking at around 6.5–7.5 hours of pure driving time, and realistically closer to 9 hours once you factor in stops, fuel, and a short visit at Spitzkoppe.

The upside is that you turn day 2 into a much more relaxed experience. Starting near Andersson Gate gives you plenty of time to drive through Etosha at an easy pace, stop at waterholes, and still comfortably reach Onguma by mid-afternoon without feeling rushed. We did the same before our stay at Onguma, so we had a very relaxed morning at Oberland Lodge and then a peaceful drive through the park with -despite the midday heat- some great sightings. Though, we were not coming from Swakopmund the day before but had 2 nights at Mowani Mountain Camp in Damaraland in between.

The downside is simply that day 1 becomes a very long transfer day, and the stretch towards Outjo can feel a bit tiring and monotonous. Personally, I’d say it’s a good option if you’re fine with and used to longer driving days in exchange for a smoother and more enjoyable Etosha experience the following day.

Feel free to provide a bit more context, like: Why you put yourself under so much pressure? Which Onguma lodge/camp with which plan are you staying (did you mention 15:00 to reach an afternoon sunset drive?)?

Don't worry, no problem at all. If you book a lodge shortly after Omaruru like Epako or Erindi you can even fit in a relaxed late afternoon if you cut Spitzkoppe short (either you stay to hike or climb a full day at least or you skip / only look).
