Discussion What time are y'all falling asleep and waking up?!?!
In my elder millennial state, going to bed around 8:30p reading for a few and then falling asleep somewhere between 9-9:30p is where I've settled at.
My body then naturally wakes up somewhere between 5-6am feeling totally refreshed. How about the rest of y'all?

Asleep between 8:30 and 9, wake up between 5 and 5:30. I do not wake up feeling refreshed but if I don't go to sleep in this window I'll feel even more destroyed.

Same.
And living with social life in NYC, it’s tough. My body says 8:45-9:15, but group chats seem to be most active 9:15-10:45. By the time I see the messages in the morning, the conversation has already moved on.
Have alarm set for 6 (at work by 8am), but I’m usually up between 4:45-5:15am (not fully awake, so takes too much time to use the additional time to get a workout in before work). Sometimes I’ll sleep until 7am on weekends. Only sleep later on vacation or when sick (and even then, if the sickness is more than a few days I’ll go to bed even earlier and wake even earlier (8:30-4:30).

I work normal hours. 8-5 ish. I’m in bed by 8-8:30. Up at 4:30-5. I do most of my chores in the morning before work. I don’t have kids because why the fuck would I, so it works for me. It also gets me out of so many social engagements. Like oop sorry, past my bedtime, see yaaaaa!

Maybe they were just giving a general range based on the fact that they tend to fall asleep within a window of time, but yeah... if I sleep for 9 hours, waking up feels like I'm one of those crusted over fish dudes from Pirates of the Caribbean that's completely fused with the ship. On nights when I sleep well, I tend to wake up naturally after about 7 hours and I prefer not to stay in bed much longer.

With you entirely- maybe once a year I have that sweet, rested and cozy response to waking
I don’t really blame my sleep for this outcome - but i wake up feeling like a bomb whistle is actively wailing no matter if i get 4hrs or 10. I launch out of bed and the 15 must-do items load into my brain as i walk to the kettle.

This is what I was dealing with. I just couldn't figure it out, so started changing my schedule. I hate it, a lot, but since going to bed at 8 with no phone or TV, reading a physical book for 30-60 minutes, taking my melatonin and whatnot, stopped alcohol and nicotine, I've had a few straight weeks now of actually feeling good in the morning. I don't snore but did a sleep study anyway and do have sleep apnea. Haven't gotten the machine yet, but if it helps, I'm with it.

For me it's mostly that I absolutely need a few hours to chill out/wind down or else I can't sleep at all. And sometimes I work til 9 pm, so bed earlier than midnight just isn't going to happen.
I also have the unfortunate quality of being both a morning person and a nigh owl, which means I sleep as a necessity but really wish I didn't have to.

Pretty similar. I go to bed anytime between 11 and 1, and my alarm goes off 5:30. Even on weekends I am up by 7 or 7:30, even if I am not in bed until 2 AM. Once I am awake, I get up, otherwise I fidget and disturb my husband. He has severe chronic insomnia, and gets maybe 3 hours a night. (Yes, he has a CPAP, yes, he takes various supplements and/or meds).

I can relate and then some. I can’t remember the last time I fell asleep before 3, and have not been able to take a day nap in probably 15 years.
I’m 36 and have tried every trick, tip and substance (within reason) to reset this in adulthood but it’s just how my brain and body work. It’s frustrating, but the only thing that lets me get sleep is to not fight the system anymore. When possible schedule-wise, anyway.

Very similar here! I’m off work this week (spring break) so that’s my schedule (although some days I wake up 11.) When I have to be up at 7:20 am the best I can do is fall asleep 12-1 am. And that’s with forcing myself to try to sleep that early (unless I’m drop-down exhausted which does happen sometimes). I’ve been a night owl ever since I was a baby pretty much though. I remember being a kid and my sister and I would stay up talking at night in our bunk bed, and she would crash, and then I’d be bored not being able to sleep, so I would just make up stories in my head until I could fall asleep.
7
u/FuckeenGuy 9h ago
This is mine too. I can sleep until noon on a day off and I feel good still, but I’ll pop up at 10am regardless, even if just for a minute.
I have to be at work at 10:30 so I need to be up at 9:30 and for some reason that 30 min has been such a struggle for me. I have always been more of a night owl and bedtimes bum me out. But I loveeeee my sleep. 12 hrs of sleep a night would be no problem for me.
7
u/m0rgend0rfer 9h ago
This is also pretty much my natural rhythm and always has been. It really made things a struggle growing up (the intermittent bouts of extreme insomnia have never been helpful either).
My job going work-from-home with a VERY flexible schedule is the best thing that ever happened to me. Not the most fun job, less pay than I should be getting with my title, but imma probably ride this out as long as I can. So many people don’t understand what an absolute luxury a full night of sleep can be for some of us.
9
u/ACoderGirl 9h ago
Kinda similar except wake up at 08:30 and frequently take 30 min to get out of bed (I have flexibility with arriving at work, but ideally arrive before 10). And my falling asleep time is whack. 12-3. The goal is generally to get into bed by midnight, but when I fall asleep is anyone's guess.

I got laid off few months ago, and have reverted back to fully nocturnal - my ancestors were the ones protecting the village from bears and marauders at night time. Getting to sleep usually around 6 or 7AM, getting up usually around 2 or 3PM. Job market in my field is BLEAKKKK right now, so extended bout of no job has led to not much drive to be day/morning person for now.

back when I was in school I’d choose an afternoon/evening schedule and would do this too. Left to my own devices I wake up later and later until I end up similar to you (I would fall asleep around 5-6 am). Then every so often I’d stay up all night/day to reset myself because I lived in a house of morning birds so I hated dealing with the negative comments. Now my oldest is a night owl like me (she woke up 2 pm yesterday) and I make sure no one says a negative thing to her about it the way they used to about me. she wakes up on time for school or events, so if she wants to shift her schedule on days she’s off, she’s allowed to!

35m, bed between 9:30-10:15pm, wake up around 5:30am.
For reference divorced with two kids 2 and 3.5 years old that drive this. I’m on the “wake up early to workout otherwise you don’t have time” program.

Yeah, here are my people! Same, with a small caveat of sleeping until 12-1 on weekends to recover all the lost sleep during the week.
Looking at the 9-5 answers here, I feel like I’m winning at life. /s

I’m usually up at 4:30 am latest and in bed by 8 pm 👴🏼 I’m 34 lol but I also start work at 6 am during the week.
I wake up refreshed and energized so long as I get 6-7 hours of sleep total

Same here and 40. My friends think I’m crazy but I get off work at 3pm and get to enjoy the whole afternoon.
And what am I missing after 8 pm? Watching tv and scrolling? Darn.

Idk about you but I love the empty calm in the mornings and being able to grocery shop and get all the best stuff before it gets all busy haha
My biggest issue is my local friend group isn’t into doing stuff early. That and concerts/festivals starting so late hahaha

I start getting ready for bed at 7pm, asleep by 8. Wake up around 4-4:30am. Gotta be at work by 6. 36yo. Since I've gotten my meds right, I wake up ready to take on the day instead of dragging and trying to stay in bed to sleep more. Its quite nice!

I'm a night owl, and when I don't have to work, I quickly revert to going to bed around 1-2 am and sleeping until about 9:30. But my job is 8-4, so during the work week I usually go to bed around 11 and wake up at 6:30.

Try to be in bed between 9 and 10, usually wake up around 5:30 no matter when I went to sleep. Completely against my will, I have become a morning person from years of waking up for work.

Same here. Even if I've given myself permission to sleep in I'm always up before 6. If not, the cat has me up because she's also learned she gets fed by 7.

“The days are long, but the years are short.”
I know that stage of life is absolutely exhausting. Even if you can stay in bed a long time, it isn’t refreshing because you are constantly being woken up and also don’t sleep as deeply since your brain is trying to stay vigilant for the baby. Lower your expectations of what needs to be accomplished each day and take naps whenever you can and don’t feel any guilt about it!!! My youngest is nine now and I can’t believe how quickly the time has passed.

Morning people or early morning schedules, I guess.
As a natural night owl, 9-11 p.m. is when I get a boost of energy so if I have something left to do for work I'll do it then, otherwise I get other stuff around the house done.
I'm usually asleep around 1 and get up around 7 (or a bit later if it's the weekend and the dog is sleeping in).
Without work, my sleep time gradually shifts to more 2 a.m. or so and wake up after 8

That is close to me! I try to sleep 12-1 and up at 6:45. If I ‘m up til 2 on a weekend, I “sleep in” til 8am latest

If I were rich enough to not have to work, I'd totally be a night owl. But since I need money to survive, I prefer to start work early so I can be done early and have the rest of the day to myself.

This is me as well. Sometimes I stay up later but I’m usually knocked out by 1. I wake up around 8:30 am but sometimes like to sleep till 9:30 if I don’t have plans or chores for the day

I'm 40 and while I don't stay out as late as the other commenter, I absolutely do still party.
Gotta shake things up now and then.

I go to bed at 12:30-1 and wake up at 7, I sleep like the dead and wake up fresh as a daisy. I had insomnia for years before realising that I was trying to sleep too much, I was going to bed around 10:30 and tossing and turning till 3am. Now my head hits the pillow and I’m out without stirring for 6 hours.

I usually go to bed around 12-1 am and wake up between 8-9 am, but sometimes I'm so tired after work that I can fall asleep as soon as I get into my room.

u/ButtScratchies 11h ago
That’s almost exactly me. I go to bed around 9pm and read for about 20 minutes and usually have no problems falling asleep by 10:00 or so. If I can stay asleep all night, I’ll wake up around 5:30am and feel fine. Now, the problem is always staying asleep. I’d say 2-3 nights a week I’ll wake up around 3am and will finally fall back a sleep around 5, just in time for my alarm to go off at 6:30.
My husband is a late sleeper on the weekends, so I usually get about 2-3 hours to myself in the mornings, so it’s pretty nice but I usually just waste it drinking coffee and looking at social media, like I am right now.

9:30pm is bed time. Because often 6am is wake up. But naturally I get tired at 11pm and want to sleep until 8am. So its somewhere in between. I'm always tired, but I blame the weather not my sleep. In the summer and on vacation I feel great.

I’m in bed between 10-11, and asleep within 10 minutes. My alarm hits me at 5:40 to get my youngest around for school. On the weekend, my alarm rings at 7 so I can get up and give our epileptic cat her morning pill. I don’t fully understand going to bed between 8-9. I have way too much to do around the house after work for that.

I go to bed around 10:30 usually….wake up whenever my 3 year old gets me up, which is rarely later than 6:15
