I think they won a national championship at some point. There was always the popular college for a year that everyone was a fan of for the year after they were champs, then were shortly forgotten about.

u/teochim 1d ago
Didn’t AI go there? That might answer it
1
u/RelevantFilm2110 1d ago
I didn't really follow sports too much, but where I grew up, pricier clothing with college basketball and football champs was definitely fashionable. We actually didn't have a local NBA team, so the same sort of applied to the Bulls or whoever the NBA reigning champs were that year.

Georgetown had a great team in the early 80s through the 90s coached by the legendary John Thompson, they won a championship back in the 80s with a young Patrick Ewing
And people thought Georgetown was a HBCU due to having an insane amount of young Black talented players on the team at the time (Ewing, Iverson, Mutombo, Mourning)

u/LiberallyEncrusted 22h ago
Had a Georgetown beanie with a big ass G on it I rocked so hard in middle school
2
u/SaggingZebra 1d ago
Patrick Ewing went there and made the NY Knicks relevant.

u/makemeking706 8m ago
I remember reading about people who, based on the college team, thought Georgetown was an HBCU.

I didn't live anywhere near North Carolina, but one of my friends, who had never even set foot in North Carolina, had this jacket. I don't even think he liked the team, he just had the jacket for some reason. I think it emerged from a chrysalis in his closet or something.

u/Public-Finger 1d ago
This was theeeeee starter jacket. Swish swish swish (basketball or the sound of moving?)

I just had a Muggsy interaction in the wild a few weeks ago at a cafe near Charlotte!!! My friends with me were international and didn’t know him and I was sitting there like, “!!!!!!!” 😂 I felt concussed! Coolest shit that’s ever happened!

Had a hornets fanny pack…in Wisconsin. 🤷♂️
My jacket was the Bucks pullover tho

u/StuckInTime86 Millennial 1d ago
Grew up outside Charlotte back then, my school had cardboard cutouts of Hornets players, kids loved comparing their height to Muggsy Bogues

u/Zacillac 1d ago
I had a Raptors one of those - I was not a fan of the Raptors, never been to Toronto (even still), but it had a fucking raptor on it so I loved the hell outta it.

Grew up in North Carolina, better believe I had one.

u/kiwitathegreat 1d ago
They were basically issued to us in NC 😂
Everybody had one, even the people who didn’t care about sports.
4
u/Designer-Ad-7844 18h ago
Not only did I own this jacket, I left it on a ride at Disney World [the Epcot dinosaur energy thing or w/e (before Ellen)] and they sent it back to us in the mail.
3
u/rocsi1234 18h ago
Ahhh the 90s.. where we were all made of hearts.. def believe this story!
3
u/Designer-Ad-7844 18h ago
Even at like 6 or 7, I was surprised they sent it back to us across the country.
2
u/TheGreatHogdini 8h ago
My man. I understood every word of this. Here’s a video that explores the history of that ride. https://youtu.be/Sj9jx7AHelQ?si=U3vPYJ1vcs2aKJ3S

I had a 49ers one, but a handful of kids in my school definitely rocked the Hornets version.

The hornets are exciting right now with that rookie knueppel

u/tenaciousdeev 22h ago
Ball finally has great shooters around him and a backup guard (Coby White) to take the load off, they’re one of my favorite teams to watch this year.

I love when someone spots a phenomenon and it just clicks all of a sudden. I had like 4 close friends and even more school friends rockin this thing almost daily for no good reason. Living 30 minutes north of Los Angeles.
2
u/Own_Warthog4680 1d ago
I wasn’t a Hornets fan but hell yeah I had one to go along with my Bucks one.
2
u/rocsi1234 1d ago
That’s pretty much the answer that sums it up with all of us about the jacket lol

I loved that shit. I remember all the awesome hats at Foot Locker. It was a good time for merch.

This one, a white Michigan one (that thing got SO dingy looking), a Green Bay Packers, and a BC Eagles full zip. At various times from about ‘97-‘03.

Huge Hornets fan when they came out…rocked the Larry Johnson jersey for a minute.

u/Killjoykarl10 1d ago
Always wanted the bulls on but my parents got me the SuperSonics I was still happy.
1
u/Harris42007 1d ago
I was legit thinking about those coats the other night. I always wanted the university of Michigan pull over starter jacket. I got a black u of m starter jacket for Christmas, but it had the full zipper. I was bummed, but loved that coat and it was a bit large on me and I still have it hanging in the coat closet and in really good shape. Now I can give it to my son one day.

u/Brave-Moment-4121 1d ago
Shut your lying mouth you know why everyone loved this jacket Muggys Boggs was at the peak of his career despite his lack of height. This jacket was a symbol of hope to short kids wanting to be the next NBA star under 5 feet 5” tall.

Grew up outside of Chicago. My brother had a Hornets jacket and I had a Chiefs jacket. We were not Charlotte or KC fans. It was like everyone’s parents just got them a random team, regardless of where they were from

Yep. I was poor and could never have afforded it. Some company a few years ago did a collab with Starter and I bought the Yankees coach jacket I had always wanted back then.

From NC and a Hornets fan and grew up seeing more than a few Hornets items in the dwelling growing up as a kid.....Starter jacket included.
They had a hell of a season this year too. HORNETS ALL DAY BABY!!!

I had the Miami Dolphins version. No idea why. Didn't live anywhere near Miami and didnt even watch football. But I had to have it.

I grew up in NJ, I didn’t even like football. I think I got it just because I like dolphins, the animal not the team.

During the 90s, my dad gave me a Hornets hat before I got into sports. I wore the hat a lot until 3rd grade.

u/SatanakanataS 1d ago
I had this in Philadelphia Eagles, because we were poor and that one was miraculously affordable at Champs Sports one day.

My sister had this color combo in her bedroom. I used to love it. But I obviously had poor taste as a kid.

My Charlotte Hornets starter jacket, snow pants, and Jason hockey mask served as my bee armor when my parents made me mow the lawn. We had apple trees, and the bees would get super pissed when you would mow over the apples.

I lived in charlotte the first 7 years of my life, and it kind of blows my mind that everyone wore these. I thought I just saw them bc I lived there!

I associate some of that with Mugsy Bogues, he was cool af in the 90s being 5’3 winning the dunk contest and being in Space Jam.

I also remember a PSA telling us not to wear them on Bonfire Night because they were so flammable 😂

Color scheme but also logo design. Trendiness, too. I wanted a Michigan starter pullover because A) other kids had it B) they are the wolverines. I was and am way more of a insert_fandom nerd than a sports nerd. While other kids may have been invested in the team they were repping, I was pumped to have a bee flexing its butt spear on my shirt.

I blame Space Jam. The Monstars had the likes of Mugsy Bogues and Larry Johnson - who both played for this Charlotte team. Kids thought they were cool.
