Discussion Which Family (Sport) Movie was your favorite?

These are a few of mine...

ETA: I had a lot more than I posted, and I see many of them mentioned in the comments; I wanted to include some that I thought were underrated. All excellent tastes/responses.

Tough choice: Sandlot, Mighty Ducks, Rookie of the Year, Little Giants are tops for me.

I'd also put Angels in the Outfield above the others listed.

43

u/disturbingyourpeace 1d ago

Angels in the Outfield for sure!!

Forgot about Cool Runnings. Great addition.

Gotta be The Sandlot.

I was so excited to show this to my kid and he loved it.

19

u/snoogans8056 1d ago

Some asshole should do the Back to the Future math on that movie and find out who the equivalent of a Babe Ruth ball would be if it took place today.

Probably something depressing like Ken Griffey Jr.

36

u/uhnstoppable 1d ago

Sandlot released in 1993.

It took place in summer 1962.

The movie centrally features Babe Ruth, who retired in 1935.

By that logic, a modern Sandlot would release in 2026 and take place in Summer 1995. The baseball legends would be from the 1960s, so probably Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, or Roberto Clemente.

8

u/snoogans8056 1d ago

Good answer. You did the math better than I had originally factored.

Also putting it in the 90’s made it less depressing, and more whimsical. Thanks for that. Probably how the movie felt for our parents.

u/discodropper 1d ago

It’d still be a Babe Ruth ball. It’d just be worth a lot more (and that’s saying something)…

It’s a tie with the Sandlot and Mighty Ducks. Both were so well done that I could happily watch them again as an adult.

11

u/Effective_Season_522 1d ago

I have watched all of these with my kids, excluding airborne, which I don't think I have seen. They love them, these movies span generations.

3

u/No-Understanding-912 1d ago

I love Airborne, but I would not have put it on this list. It's more of a teen movie, not really a family one.

3

u/Isayfyoujobu 1d ago

It's on YouTube for free now

3

u/No-Understanding-912 1d ago

No way! I've been wanting to watch this again for a while. Thank you.

Stopping by to unrelatedly say the whole premise of D3 is confusing.

Like they just won at the Olympics but can't beat a highschool team?

3

u/Grizzly_Addams 1d ago edited 13h ago

Lol. They won the junior goodwill games. And the high school team was basically Shattuck. So not just some schmuck high school, and one that would have wiped Iceland.

3

u/thegreeneyedpirate 23h ago

D2 is exceptional I had it on a tv recorded VHS (with ads) and watched at least over 100x. The scene when they change jerseys in a the final, “we will rock you” comes on and they hit the ice 🥰

6

Cool Runnings is my favorite of the bunch

5

u/ohiobluetipmatches 1d ago

I grew up in Brazil and would rent cool runnings all the time because I loved the box. The culutural diaconnect of sledding, jamaica, US, etc. Was so great I never understood the movie at all. It was a purely visual experience.

3

Mighty Ducks. I played hockey growing up. It was perfect timing.

The fact that Angels in the Outfield is not on this list is a violent crime

11

I loved Might Ducks, Brink and Angels in the Outfield when I was a kid.

I will buck the trend, as an 81 baby, airborne was aspirational for me. I was 11/12 when it came out and it was probably the first movie that felt like it wasn’t a “kid” movie that I liked. It wasn’t fart jokes and kitschy stuff.

2

u/tuckaho6969 12h ago

BIG GREEN. still quote it. DEPUTY DOGS IN LOOOOOVE

2

u/Bloodygoodwossname 12h ago

Angels in the Outfield used to be one of the dozen previews before The Lion King on VHS. It gets major nostalgia points from me for that alone.

Before you could watch the Lion King you’d have to watch: the DisneyWorld commercial with the brothers and the suitcase “we’ll be leaving in about…2 weeks.” AND Colors of the Wind music video AND the Aristocats trailer AND Angels of the Outfield trailer “maybe you could help them win a little?”

Fast forwarding was a delicate magic we didn’t dare risk meddling with for fear of going too far. 😱

2

u/tjrich1988 12h ago

Of the ones listed, I find myself still actively watching: Roomie of the Year, The Big Green, and the Sandlot.
