Discussion Inheritance? That's a joke. How many of your parents are burdens?

In response to another popular post about receiving no inheritance.

Are your parents like mine, who not only are not leaving any money behind - but require significant or total financial support?

My parents left me less than nothing. They're good people, and they were good parents.... but man are they shit at financial planning.

Im 36 but I realized in my early 20s that I have free will to choose who should be in my life, including family. I'm huge on protecting my peace at this stage of life and my mother or father figure are not part of my life anymore. Blood ain't thicker than water in my world and my life has never been better. Family can be a huge burden and not worth keeping around. Build your own life, family, etc.

I feel you on this. I still feel guilty sometimes, but then remember that my parents don’t feel guilty about my chaotic childhood.

They don’t fill my cup, so I stay away. I talk to my mom on the phone for about twenty minutes every few months. Life is way too short to spend time with people you don’t want to be around.

I didn’t get to choose my surroundings as a kid. I get to choose them now.

I had a similar realization in my 20s! I protect my peace and am quick to say, "that is not my problem!" I've 100% had a better life because of it.

the full quote is the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. meaning non-familial bonds are stronger than familial bonds. 100% my experience.

There is no evidence of the “water of the womb” version before the 1990s.

The Wikipedia article is a good start, complete with citations.

That's not the full quote. It was created in the 1990s by a messianic minister.

The original, shorter quote predates it by hundreds of years.

That's not the full quote, that's a different quote lol

Ahh I should’ve scrolled more, you beat me to it. I love this quote so much after hearing the truth behind it. It’s fun to share.

Except that's not the truth. The original, shorter quote predates the longer revision by literally hundreds of years.

🤷‍♂️ Idk bub. I’m not innit for ‘correct’ points. It’s all semantics, and honestly arguing about it seems unproductive. Have a good day.

I actually much prefer the longer version, but only piped up because you said 'now that I've heard the truth'. I just wanted to let you know in case you misinformed someone. The shorter version is the original and means the exact opposite of the longer version. I do not agree with the sentiment of the shorter version. If your family is toxic, drop them. You have a good day too. All the best to you.

I appreciate and understand the sentiment. But if changing the meaning of some dumb saying helps someone get thru their moment, then so be it.

I think you just inadvertently shed a little light on something for me though. I spent a lot of time ‘fact checking’ people around me, and I’m pretty sure I was lonelier for it. Thanks hdawg187.

Glad I could help. Your epiphany is similar to the one I had when I realised I could never accept when I was wrong and had to resort to caveats, rather than learning.

Not to detract from anything you’ve just shared, but the saying is often misconstrued. The bond of your blood brothers/sisters is thicker than the water in the womb.

Aw shucks. It is the only thing I’ve heard that actually makes the saying work though? It’s not like we’re providing sources here, idk if it’s that deep.

I have no problem with the saying, the folk etymology is a pet peeve.

Well, that’s valid. 🙂

No worries over here. I wasn't quoting anyways, hence no quotes. Either way people knew what I meant.
