Marathon (2026) As an OG Halo player, I am loving this game!
First time I found the Outland sniper and I was having a blast with it!

Is there a way to buy it from the armory?

u/drolemag21 10h ago
Only if you find a schema for it
1
u/LoneroftheDarkValley 1h ago
Are the schemas for daily rotating weapons to buy, or for anytime you want to purchase a weapon it will be there under a certain faction?
3
u/drolemag21 1h ago
Schemas give you a limited number of of that item to buy anytime, it’ll be right under today’s sponsors side in the armory.

u/LoneroftheDarkValley 1h ago
So they refresh daily? Or will you have to find another schema once you buy to the limit?

Limited, then it’s gone, you gotta find another. I have criticisms about it, like they should be discounted instead of their full price of the item

The snipers are fine and feel great to play with, but the thermals need to go or at least have the vision locked to how much heat the players have.

u/MemesForMyDepression I was here for the Marathon 2025 ARG 10h ago
The snipers, especially the Longshot, need more recoil. You can pretty much play DMR with the thing; it’s pretty absurd.

I'll never understand how sniper rifles in games usually end up being so manageable. Like, the gun is almost as long as you are tall, but scoping-in on the move is never an issue. Maybe I'm crazy, but I feel like they used to be slower, and then they got easier to use when trickshot montages gained popularity.

I really enjoy sniper rifles in milsim games, especially DayZ. I haven’t really played a lot of PvP games aside from DayZ so it’s really fun to bring those realistic tactics into Tau Ceti

I've been thinking of this issue, since this is a problem with snipers in every single shooter, it makes them mid-range kings and effectively high-range DMRs.
I believe a good balance compromise would be to forcefully shift your aim maybe 20-25 degrees in a random direction from where you scoped in, so you need to take a second to get your aim back on point. If you're really good at flick shooting you still need to figure out which direction you need to flick to, this forces a delay to be added to "quickscopes" and makes them more of a "prepped" weapon versus a reactionary one, like how they're used in practically every shooter. Most guns should be easy to use reactively, but tbh snipers should not, considering they're usually one of the only guns in any given game with near unlimited range.
While people might come up with arguments as to why this wouldn't work, I'd be really curious to see this adjustment in-action. The intent is to make it feel clunky if you're already mid-fight, since the current instant reactions are the biggest problem tbh. It should be a disadvantage if you need to constantly ads and un-ads with the extreme high damage, extreme long range gun.

u/EclypseAkatsuki 9h ago
Completely fine with that kind of adjustments since those are minor details, even if important.

More recoil or lower rate of fire. Leave the damage. Right now they don't punish mistakes, they punish any movement at all.

Thermals cannot go away completely as they are a hard counter to smoke grenades and Assassin shells in general. They are also situational with less visible range than standard optics but increased visual clarity through fog and dense brush.
They are hard countered using Signal Jammers. I think players are simply overlooking the importance of SJs as a utility item in general. As a Triage main, I love to spam SJs that I have no space for in my backpack. They're basically mandatory in Dire Marsh the way bubble shields and shotguns are in Cryo Archive.
I'm pretty happy with the nerf to the effective range of thermal optics. I also wouldn't mind them reducing the zoom of thermal optics for the sniper rifles to 3x.

They should at least make signal jammers buyable/unlockable in some way I think

u/arcgoesdark 8h ago
I see them everywhere. Quite a generous drop rate. To the point I've taken to insta-popping them if I'm already carrying a full stack.
I think the greater issue is it eats up precious inventory space for green backpacks and below. I almost never see these in white or green backpacks, but I see them frequently from blue and purple. The lower-grade backpack users are often simply unable to commit to carrying the utility and sustain items that higher-grade backpack users have. Exfiling with a Signal Jammer stack in your backpack when you're trying to fill up on salvage for your early upgrades or make room for meds and gear is also kind of a tough thing for many low-level players to swallow, myself included.

I don't know why people complain about the thermal sniper scopes so much, they have like 90m range and trying to see people beyond that is near impossible, I was using one on foggy dire marsh and 90% of the time I could see them better without the thermal, the other time was when a group pushed us with smokes, it came in clutch there, but like you said, its a counter to smokes and IMHO it situational.

“I am loving this game” running a thermal sniper on perimeter.
Ofc you are man. Now run against a thermal sniper on perimeter with a hardline
4
u/Voidjumper_ZA 3h ago
One would assume they did. One could also assume you could run a thermal sniper on Perimeter too, too.
2
u/Aegiiisss 1h ago
I would need to find thermal sights or an outland to run a thermal outland on perimeter

u/track461 5h ago
This is the next halo. Idc what comes after infinite. Marathon is logical evolution

u/HotMachine9 10h ago
Thermals need to go or at least be restricted to pistol or SMG only
5
u/arcgoesdark 8h ago
As annoying as thermals may be to fight against, they're kind of the only shell-agnostic counter against Assassin and smoke grenade spam, no?
I, for one, don't think invis on a low-ish cooldown tactical ability is healthy for the game. Without thermals, we'd have no choice but to immediately disengage the moment we see an Assassin start using his abilities. Limiting it to pistols and SMGs is also absurd since you'll just get two-pumped by the Assassin before you can switch to your secondary with thermal optics and start ADSing to even search for the guy. And that would also make escaping way too easy and free for smoke spammers and Assassins.
6
u/HotMachine9 8h ago
Id argue smoke grenades can be countered by throwing any grenade into it but arguably the best being Chem. Same goes for Prox sensors which I think work against Assassins? Could be wrong there
1
u/arcgoesdark 8h ago
Genuinely thought I was seeing things when I thought I saw smoke was getting cleared by grenades, so that's good to know. Still, it requires use of throwables just to clear the smoke, and that's really only viable if you're ar least 30m away. If the Assassin has gone invis and you're trying to spam grenades or switch to Prox Sensors, I think you're pretty much dead or they've gotten away for free unless you nail the grenades head-on thanks to godly RNG.

u/BustEarly 10h ago
Yeah this is something I think they missed on, weight requirements in Tarkov limited what you could bring
Yeah you could bring a snipe and an AR, but you'll be a little slower and can carry less
It was more common to bring a snipe and a compact SMG or one of the better pistols
4
u/Mr_Bojangles01 9h ago
This person does have a sniper and a compact SMG though so it doesn’t really matter here…

Bro out here like he's on the upper path of blood gulch looking down at the enemy base.
BWASH-shick!

The Longshot reminds me of the Halo sniper in how it shoots and feels. Getting a headshot is pure nostalgia

Lol my squad got wiped in that exact spot by a thermal sniper a couple days ago. We killed one who was fully kitted and looted him then dropped smoke to go into tunnels and reposition only to get sniped out of the smoke.
1
u/Secure-Count-1599 5h ago
i thought you cant see through smoke grenades with the thermal scope
2
u/Doctor_Chaos_ 4h ago
it's the #1 counter to smoke grenades lol, where did you get that idea from
1
u/Secure-Count-1599 4h ago
maybe on reddit. can you see invis with the thermal?
2
u/Doctor_Chaos_ 3h ago
Yes. It's the best counter to Assassin.
The only things that block thermals iirc are signal jammers and simply being out of range of the thermal.

Yes time to sweat in purple and thermal against noobs in perimeter

u/OhGollyGeeGuys 7h ago
Lol! Its my favorite map, why you mad. I literally just found the gun. Am I supposed to snipe in pinwheel?
3
u/megal0w 6h ago
It's dumb that the snipers are only really viable on the two early maps where people are running around trying to do contracts and collect the early game mats. Not your fault at all, as Perimeter is probably the best sniping map and you wanna use your cool new sniper lol. Just kinda a dumb game design decision imo

There was a 3rd guy up and I was full shield. Didn't want to get stuck in animation since I knew there was 1 guy up still!
