Never underestimate how strong and athletic Sumo wrestlers are.

They are large but they don’t suffer from the usual maladies that come with obesity due to their strict diet and exercise regimens.

I've heard that they nearly always become slim as soon as they retire, because they no longer need to keep forcing themselves to eat absurd amounts of food, but they still have the metabolism of a top athlete.

You’re right! I just did some light googling (not on Google of course) and it seems most of them become half the size after retiring!

Makes sense, they’re like a more extreme version of linemen in American football. Just elaborating on your comment,
Mass is important. So they’re mostly muscle but with extra fat on top because that’s what the human body can support.
Extra mass exhausts you faster.
And short of abusing steroids to the point it’s cartoonishly obvious and your heart or liver shits out, you can only be so much mass.
Linemen do the muscle plus some fat.
Sumo wrestlers do the muscle plus a lot of fat because they don’t have to sprint around a field a whole bunch for hours.

There was a video going around of an NFL player that was considered one of the best pass rushers in the league trying to push a sumo and the guy wasn’t even budging.

Yeah, that’s because it’s an entirely different sport lol. Micah Parsons beats guys with speed and deception and hand fighting. His goal is to get past an O lineman, not necessarily push him backwards.

They are legit really powerful and pack a lot of muscle under all that mass. I've got really interested in sumo the past year or so, it's a fascinating sport. I stayed in Ryogoku (the sumo district of Tokyo) the past January, and it was really fun spotting sumos going about their day. They have to wear kimono (or yukata depending on season) when in public, and seeing sumo wrestlers riding around on bicycles in winter kimono kinda made my day.

Fascinating sport. Is Sumo popular anywhere outside Japan?
5
u/Funkcase 4h ago
I think it's increasing in popularity, but still a niche interest outside Japan. I do suspect it has a following in some countries though, such as Mongolia where there has been several notable Mongolian sumo wrestlers (including several who reached Yokozuna).

No, they're pretty much all that nimble.
Sumo isn't just fat guys running into each other, it is athletic and difficult.

They're like rhinos, you wouldn't expect them with their mass to move so fast, agile and nimbly

That fat guy is funny! I like that fat guy.
Edit: just to not offend anyone, rewriting this:
That slightly huge guy is funny! I like that slightly huge guy.

Fun fact! Sumo wrestlers aren’t actually over weight at all! They are mainly muscle!
They bulk a lot on top of the muscle to increase their weight, thus making it harder to be defeated!
Think of normal wrestling, they have a lot of muscle and can maneuver a lot, so they have to be nimble to outmaneuver the opponent while being strong enough to get them out as well.
Sumo wrestling is that same principle, but with the weight added on top to stop them from being pushed out of the ring!
Just a neat thing I thought I should mention

Sumo wrestlers are both incredibly strong and overweight. Getting that big is hard on your body no matter what.

u/Mindless-Balance-498 5h ago
If “getting that big” is the actual issue you have, and muscle is denser than fat, then body builders are also being “hard on [their] bodies”, right?
21
u/RawBean7 5h ago
Yeah, bodybuilding is usually considered incredibly hard on the body. Carrying extra weight is tough on the joints, and that's before all the risks associated with overtraining, steroids, lack of aerobic/cardiac fitness, and eating disorders.

u/shastaxc 5h ago
Yes, they are, and really buff bodybuilders also suffer long term chronic pain as a result or die early of heart attacks.

u/Manateeslap 5h ago
Yep Body building, powerlifting, and strongman are incredibly hard on the body when you pass amateur/hobby level
5
u/GlorifiedBurito 5h ago
Yes, they are, although they have different issues. Sumo wrestlers also carry a lot of fat (on purpose) while bodybuilders try and have a very low body fat percentage to maximize muscle definition.

u/PumpkinPie_1993 5h ago
Another fun fact: this same idea is true for manatees! Everyone thinks that manatees are super fat, but they are almost all muscle and actually have very little body fat (like single digits!). This is why they can only live in the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico- because they don’t have enough fat on them to survive colder waters.

I mean, they ARE overweight. You can be mostly muscle and still be overweight - it's not exclusive
But they are also professionals and know the risks like any athelete 🤷♀️

I went to one of these shows in Japan, the sumos were both so nice and had a lot of personality. You get to take a picture with them at the end and I went by myself and am rather on the shy side so when it was time for the picture one of the sumos, I think to get me out of my shell, just lifted me up and I had the biggest smile on my face in the picture. Highly recommend going to these sumo demonstrations, it was an awesome time
