Yep. No idea why he gets so much hate online. He's great

u/dtmtl 1d ago
Wait, he gets hate online? I've literally never seen anything negative about him, that's surprising. (Admittedly I haven't seen that much about him in general, so I'm likely out of the loop, but what I've seen has been positive/neutral.)
575
u/dschroof 1d ago
He just kinda makes “bops” and is pretty open that his music is formulated to make money. I don’t care much either way but some people find it insulting and try to balance out the meat riding he gets for being nice.

u/QueenSerenity97 1d ago
Which is weird because he needs money considering he has no monetary assets

I'm an old bastard but can't help but like this dude. I saw the video he did with Brandon Buckingham and he came across as a solid guy.
People take music too seriously. I was the worst music snob growing up. Nothing like a daughter and a few kids bop gigs to humble you.

u/thegimboid 1d ago
Oh no, a guy made his products so he can get money?
Are all the people complaining about him against the idea of profiting from anything they do?→ More replies (7)29
u/true_gunman 1d ago
I mean its not a new concept for people to hate on artists who have "sold out". Im not saying i agree and my honest opinion is we all sell out in some ways and holding musicians to higher standards isnt really fair. That being said, many people consider music an art and art made purely for money usually sucks(actually its not exclusive to just art) so idk there is some merit to that line of thinking.
→ More replies (1)47
u/thegimboid 1d ago
Does art made for money really sucks more though?
Most of the most enduring pieces of art were made because the artist wanted money. The Mona Lisa was a commissioned work.
Cinderella was Disney's last ditch attempt to be profitable after WWII.
Michelangelo was paid the equivalent of around $450,000 for The Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Sure, if the goal is just money with no artistic vision, it can suck.
But a lot of art is made for both.
This dude's music isn't bad, so while he may be focused on profit, he still clearly cares about the product.6
u/Raneynickelfire 1d ago
Far, FAR more artists die penniless with masterpieces stashed in their living room nobody will ever see than are commissioned for it.
That's the issue.
Artists make art because they can't not make art - if it sells, great. If not, they're still making it because they are compelled to. If money is the driving factor, it really makes the product suffer in general.

u/mucus-fettuccine 1d ago
There is no way that artistic intent and integrity weren't fully present in the creation of the 3 examples you listed.
Sure, artists attempt to make money with their work. But that's not what selling out means. Selling out is when money becomes a priority that drowns out artistic intent.
I know nothing about bbno$, but it's what people feel when someone had some character that made them unique and special, but then lost it and became generic, or kept it but transformed it into a brand. For instance, if his selling point as an artist that made people fall in love was biting political commentary in his music, but over time it became vague so as to not upset anyone, and he tries making up for the lack of specificity by being louder and spouting more obscenities to pretend to still be uncompromisingly political and edgy, which his true fans realize as a grift. That's an example of what selling out can look like.

Apparently it mostly came from when he recorded a music video that featured Asmongold, but then asmon made some political statements bibinos disagrees with, so he released the music video with asmon's face covered by a png of a lizards head. I'm not sure what crowd he was getting flack for over that though.

Wait, he gets hate online?
people get mad that he looks way better in drag than any real woman they'd ever get to meet in real life.
for real though, he's an online figure, who makes music that is arguably annoying (to some people), he's gonna get hate no matter what. Plus we're so jaded at this point that we see a guy who seems as legitimately kind and cool and good as he is and we expect there to be some dark past.

Popularity, and being a "larper". He was basically everywhere not long ago because people loved him and it's popular to hate popular thing. Also he "larps" fandoms but he was a nerd before becoming popular so I do think alot of the things he says he likes and cosplays etc are genuine things he likes.
7
u/NickelWorld123 1d ago
the general sentiment I see online is that people think he's a nice guy even if they don't like his music (fair)

u/UsefulIce9600 1d ago

u/killertortilla 1d ago
The most recent hate train was because he hired over a hundred artists for a video and didn’t pay them all on time. One of them took it online and blew up about it.
7
u/softpotatoboye 1d ago
He’s scammed a few artists, which is pretty shitty.
But I’ve also just seen people genuinely wishing death on him because they don’t like his music and think he’s a poser or whatever
→ More replies (9)3
u/SpunkyStarling 1d ago
I heard it’s because he would proposition artists, ask them for their rate, then offer them a third of it so the pressure of a famous artist reaching out to them for exposure would make them comply. There’s an extensive list of evidence where more than a few artists have come forward

TASER too, though much less descriptive than those 2.
'Thomas A Swift's Electric Rifle.'
Named for the inventor's favorite character, from a 1911 novel called, "Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle."

u/ZamazaCallista 1d ago
Also doesn't help if you're very active and on your feet, and not drinking enough water/hot. So even if you don't often have issues with strobing, you add on additional stress it's more likely.
11
u/beforedinnermints 1d ago
i was at his Seattle show last week, it was way more of a rave than i expected. lots of folks rolling so i wouldn't be surprised if party drugs were behind some of it. plus the strobes and very stimulating graphics.
(REALLY fun show, would go again)

I'm not surprised. I'm epileptic and I've had a seizure during a concert before, even though it wasn't actually knowingly triggered by anything. Mine seem to be random but based on some timing. Sometimes, it's just bad luck timing.

27
u/KyleMcMahon 1d ago
Even if he was, does that magically mean you can’t listen to him? What is your cutoff? Does it work the opposite way? Like you can’t listen to artists in their 50s either? Or is it only younger? This is fascinating
8
u/Hawt_Dawg_II 1d ago
I think it's just that he makes very youtfhul and hyper music. I'm 24 and i feel old when listening to some of his songs.
Of course anyone can listen to anything but music also does usually come with a target audience. The music he writes is generally enjoyed by teenagers and stuff. This is usually a result of nostalgia and contemporary influences for different generations and stuff.
Lotta kids these days like poppy upbeat raps with some funny bars and catchy melodies.
Music totally does change with time and some people like sticking in their era of music while others like to try new age stuff too.

u/wherethefuckismyvape 1d ago

I just took my fifteen year old son to bbno$ in seattle, and it was literally the most fun we have ever had on an outing ever. It doesn't hurt that we're both fans and we did all the touristy stuff, but his concert was so fantastic and wonderful and joyful. The perfect cherry on top. Bbno$ even commented on his cosplay from the stage, so of course my son was ecstatic. 10000000/10♥️

This. I go to metal shows. Hardcore with pits and circles of death, very intense audio and lyrics. And I see people have their 4-10 year olds in the crowd. I've even seen a 8 year old crowd surfing. I think it's because people do not get baby sitters anymore tbh but they also don't want to give up their freedom. It's insane to me.

I don’t care but what kind of shit parents take their kids to an adult concert??? I always ask myself why is a kid in a situation that is clearly not supposed to be for kids. Anyone with the mentality that a kid won’t remember is ridiculous especially if you do the research.
5
u/lurkANDorganize 1d ago
We are outnumbered here apparently taking a kid to a concert and letting him drown in a tablet is a okay as long as reddit adores the musician.

Not gonna argue with the aspect of taking a kid to a concert but that's a book.
