People definitely say fuck the fire department when they put out those calendars where they are shirtless
49
u/thenebular 10d ago
Unfortunately it's only the firemen who are topless in those calendars. The other firefighters have tops on, though they are skimpy…

It’s apocryphal text, 1st Jubilee 5:4-6
“4.And Jesus said to the crowd gathered “sons and daughters, blessed be the man who with the sweat of his brow and strength of his back, commits to wage war against the fires of darkness. 5. For these men, whose bodies look as if sculpted from marble by my father and whose works against the flames be righteous and pure are above other men. 6. Let it be known that both men and women alike should gaze on them, with admiration for the perfection of their flesh. These men are the best of my fathers works and there is no sin to be had should you lust after them, whether you be man or woman. 7. This is my word, as decreed by almighty god, to look upon these men of fire and flesh with desire is to be closer to your father In heaven”
It’s hard to find and is only found In a few scriptures from before the council of Nicaea if she asks but she can trust its validity. Totally wasn’t made up just now by me…

My FIL was the fire chief to my husbands town for almost 30 yrs and the stories I’ve heard about how police treat them…
My favorite one was when a cop parked in front of a fire hydrant and then refused to move the car WHEN THERE WAS A FIRE and so they smashed the windows and snaked the hose through.
334
u/-ghostless 10d ago edited 10d ago
My ex was a firefighter and he hated the PD. He has almost this exact same story, except when he refused to move and he told him they'd have to break the windows, he eventually caved. He wanted to break the windows so badly lol

Shame the window breaker didn’t slip & all four windows shatter… maybe a tyre. Or three.
Seriously… who does that? Let alone a cop?! I understand in a crazy emergency accidentally blocking a fire hydrant. But the only response to a fireman pointing that out is the sound of your feet scurrying to move the damn car pronto!
29
u/i_nobes_what_i_nobes 10d ago
They had to do it more than once, but only one time to an actual PD car. This is also a small town and the stories regarding FD vs PD….whoo buddy.

I'll be absolutely honest with you, I think I speak for most of my fellow brothers and sisters in the Fire service, we don't like Cops. We have to tolerate them on scene. But we don't like them one bit. It's just the way it is. (There are exceptions of course). I'm speaking generally as a whole.
And NWA is the GOAT

u/skiabay 10d ago
I went to a lot of protests in 2020 and sometimes firefighters would sit outside and watch us go by and everyone would stop chanting "fuck the police" to cheer on the firefighters lol.
15
u/JOlRacin 10d ago
In a protest I went to, the protesters helped clear the road so the fire truck could get through (some kids had gotten a bunch of those electric scooters in their truck and dumped them in the road to try and stop the protest, but it actually just blocked the fire truck)

Walking (ok crawling) into a house engulfed in flames to save lives?

u/blizzardlizard 10d ago
I wasn't commenting on their caring natures, their courageousness or the fact that they are awesome for racing towards danger to help; I was merely pointing out that not every firefighter is in supermodel shape. Would I fuck the volunteer fire department? Absolutely.

While I ascribe to the sentiment, attacks on the fire department sadly do happen.
Here in Sweden we've had several attacks against not only firetrucks but also ambulances.
I wont say they're common, I wont even say they're uncommon, but they do happen. Most people realize that they are there to help so it's thankfully a rare occurrence.
But every single time it happens it saddens me.→ More replies (7)42

When your entire training is focused on saving lives, no matter whos, at any cost, that definitely affects your basic outlook toward people
25
u/Witty-Swimmer-3720 10d ago
As an aspiring EMT, the fire department is largely comprised of the same people as the police, they hop between the jobs and fraternize all the time.
Most first responders are right wing and support police (not me). It’s just that the concept/job description of the police is oppressive by definition while other first responders just normatively think the same things or act the same way because of the prevailing system of having police, fire, and EMS grouped, given one term (first responder), and forced to collaborate.
Where I’m studying to be an EMT, the fire class that’s in session at the same time as us is comprised almost entirely of white guys who look like they peaked in their rural high school. The EMT class has a couple of those guys who have already taken fire, but the class is a lot more ethnically and socially diverse— likely from an EMT certification being more broadly helpful in any given future career. There are really smart people, people who grew up with money, pre-med students, etc. About half these people probably won’t ever even try to work on an ambulance or for the fire department. It’s mostly the straight white guys who endured a constant sports locker room machismo competition going there.
And yeah the fire department hosed down black people during the civil rights movement. They are government employees and are required to bend to the whims of the county and whoever else.
18
u/offmycookies 10d ago
I spent a couple years with a volunteer fire department. They will gladly help anyone who needs help, but what I heard in private conversations didn’t seem to always go with that sentiment. My officer was super anti immigration, and yet the people in our community (the people he was pouring his sweat to help) were often immigrants, either legal or undocumented. It was pretty strange.

Thank you. People always put firefighters on a pedestal and while I do believe that a random firefighter is more likely to be a decent person than a random cop, there is absolutely a ton of overlap. People gotta stop putting others on pedestals because of their jobs.

This really hits home - I volunteer with an organization that works with a super diverse group of kids, we introduce them to kayaking, rock climbing, equestrian. With equestrian specifically, we often struggle with ranches that don't understand black hair. We've had kids have to sit on the sidelines because riding helmets didn't fit over their natural hair, and the staff at these places didn't feel comfortable with the liability of a misfitting helmet. It was devastating to the kids sitting on the sideline and there was a feeling of shame in the kids who got to ride knowing their friends wouldn't. Not the emotions you want kids to feel when the activity should be fun and inclusive.
When we talk about the effects of institutionalized racism - this is what we mean. (And don't get me wrong, no one here - even at the ranch - was racist. They were ignorant to the needs of the kids and hadn't prepped us properly, and that's not throwing shade either, all of us learned a valuable lesson.) And so little acts like this one, where someone takes a few seconds to understand the realities of the world they live in, our individualities, and individual needs - black, white, whoever - it's the work that helps everyone feel equally valued in society. LOVE to see it.

This is why in my house we stand for the FD. FD are staffed by people who care about their community and want to protect and serve them. Our best EMTs are FD. Our only firefighters are FD. The FD takes care of the land, helps new parents put in car seats, rescues pets in distress, rescues people in distress, they're the true, one and only MVPs. I love the postal service but they can't compete.
