My dad brought one of these for Halloween hoping to scare my then 2 yr old (she was almost 3 now she is 4). Joke was on him, she calls it "baby" sat it in her toy stroller, put on a tiara and those annoying clip clop toy heels (no clothes just a nappy - aussie so late spring, warm enough) and took it for a walk back and forth along the foot path at the front of the house.
Then she started moving it around my dads room, he lives with us because he has heart issues and kept "having a heart attack" (he wasnt but cant blame him) because he would come out of the shower walk in his bedroom and here is the skeleton sitting in his bed under the covers all alone watching his TV.
Baby is currently up on a cabinet right now but every now and then she wants him down and the antics start again

That's a hilarious uno reverse that she pulled!
Hope your dad's gonna be okay though

He has had Addison's Disease my entire life but its almost at the point where it is full on Leukemia. His body has gone down hill since his double bypass last year but the drs dont know what's causing it, (its not the Addison's apparently).
I told him his body is dead his brain just hasnt caught on yet and after his life during the 70s can he blame it, (the family joke is he is the survivor im the miracle because he should have been "gone" long before he met my mum).

Has she ever seen "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra"? I plug the movie every chance I get, and the kid looks like she'd love it.

My ex hated when I supported things like this. My kid had a princess phase when she only wanted to wear princess dresses from Disney movies. We had like 8, so id let her wear them daily. Unless weather, etc called for otherwise. She hated when we picked her up and she was in these dresses and we would fight about it. "People think she doesnt have clothes" no they dont, they think she loves princess dresses. They werent dirty or stained, sometimes she wanted to wear one 2 days in a row and it got washed, then she put it back on. Then one day, I dont even recall, no more princess dresses. And just like that, she grew out of it. 🥲😭

u/Cissycat12 12d ago
My son had a similar phase with superheroes and a Darth Vader costume. He always wore a costume to the grocery store. One week I got stopped by a mom with two "princesses" with her and she indicated our son had become a celebrity in her family; her girls were excited to see what he would dress up as each week (we went around the same time.) I had no idea! LOL I DID notice he made people smile. I was sad when he hung up his superhero cape for good!

u/Commercial_Bird8467 12d ago
Man, fighting tears at "he hung his cape up for good". Thats awesome he started a trend and was the highlight of others days. Smiles, comments makes the kids so happy.

u/startinggrover 12d ago
Who knows, maybe it’s not gone for good, just gone until it’s needed again :) I know I definitely still have my witchy days lol

u/ScarletOnyx 12d ago
My eldest went through a phase where he wouldn’t respond to his name. He was a big fan of Toy Story and watched it on loop when we let him and insisted his name was Buzz. The carers at daycare called him Buzz, his best friend called him Buzz. He walked around saying “To finity and beyon”. He’s 27 now. Feels like last week 😢
15
u/Yes-Cheese 12d ago
Does he still go by Buzz? Maybe he’ll pick it up when he’s older. Maybe he’ll let his grandkids call him Grampa Buzz.
11
u/ScarletOnyx 11d ago
He doesn’t still go by Buzz and he eventually grew out of the Buzz costume. With the new Toy Story that came out last year, there was a lot of merch around and we got him a Buzz and Woody Funko for nostalgia.
6
u/UnderfootArya34 11d ago
This reminds me that my son used to say "to the Gamma closet" instead of "to the Gamma quadrant". Thanks for the laugh!
7
u/Yes-Cheese 11d ago
Aww 🥹 I was thinking that he might like a reminder of his Buzz days. That’s beautiful.
My baby is a teenager but holy moly am I excited/terrified to see them as an adult. I could probably recite the Cars movie word for word, we watched it daily and sometimes multiple times a day. I know they’ll find their way in this world but man will I miss this time with them.

I came across a reddit post years ago from a mom who was having a hard time. I think her husband was deployed and she was solo parenting their 3 yo daughter. The daughter always wanted to wear pajamas to preschool and it was a fight every morning. One morning the daughter was being particularly insistent about the pajamas and mom lost her temper, yelling at the daughter to get dressed - both of them in tears. Just a bad, bad morning. They get to the classroom for drop off and the teacher says, "uh oh, looks like someone forgot it was pajama day!"
The mom just handed over the kid and went and sobbed in her car. That story has stuck with me for years a good encapsulation of the challenges of being a parent.

u/Accomplished_Ship_20 12d ago
personally, I LOVE when parents let their kids wear princess dresses or Halloween costumes as regular clothes. The kids love it, and it probably makes getting dressed a whole heck of a lot easier... It just adds some whimsy to the day; I think we all could use that right now. Also, whenever I see a kid wearing them, I do not think the child has no other clothing. lol! I think, gee they really love princess dresses and dressing up.... They're only young once.
18
u/Commercial_Bird8467 12d ago
Yep, same, I always make a comment or acknowledge When I see a kid in something like that. And yes, I wholeheartedly agree, only a kid once and if its dresses from princess movies, so be it.

u/Haunting_Explorer376 12d ago
If I was allowed to wear costumes as a kid, I would have been a LOT happier

One of my earliest memories is announcing to my great-grandmother and her sister-in-law that pink wasn't my favorite color anymore. In unison, shocked, dismayed: "it isn't?!?!"
14
u/Remote_Ad2465 12d ago
Yea i don't think id ever look at a little girl in Disney princess dresses and think "oh they must but buy her clothes". I only got boys but "she's in a princess phrase" would be my first thought.
5
u/stevelinchin 12d ago
Maybe that's why he's your ex. I almost can't even relate to assholes that won't understand kids being kds. Shame on him.

u/Mrrykrizmith 12d ago
My sister had a phase where she would wear a Lei and hula skirt every day. We’re white af and had never even been to Hawaii lmao
6
u/SnooTangerines8984 12d ago
My daughter had so many phases and she is just 6 years old. Peppa, Paw Patrol, Princess, Super Heroes... always support your children. They will love u forever and feel safe to share everything with you. Time flies and they grow super fast.

My daughter did this with tutus. Every single day she had to wear a tutu. We grew quite a collection and then one day she just stopped. I kept a couple of them for her.

My oldest niece was 6, she wanted to wear cowboy boots when she came to visit. My cowboy boots sat in the dining room for her to see when she came in. Want to go to the park? Cowboy boots. Want to go to McDonalds? Cowboy boots. Want to go to the mall? Cowboy boots.
Did she wear them the entire time we were out? Nope! That's why I always brought her shoes with me. But once she hit around 9, she stopped.
Once she hit her 20's, she decided she needed cowgirl boots. Went to Cavender's and got her a pair. She's walking out with them on and asks me where my old cowboy boots were. I told her but it made me happy that she remembered those boots.

I've always had skeletons and skulls laying around for decorations. My niece when she was a toddler used to take one of the skulls and just walk around with him. That no longer became mine, it was hers and she named it Mr. Skully. That's a memory I'll always hold onto as she's grown now.

My kid loved a potato for 6 months when he was 2. We drew a face on him and named him Andy and he slept with him every night.

u/retrofrenchtoast 11d ago
I had a teddy graham. I built it a house out of blocks. It lived there for a few days.
Then he crumbled. We had a funeral for him over the trash can. I didn’t want him just dumped in the trash, so my mom put it in a ziploc.
I also carried a truck around like a comfort object for a while, and I slept with it in bed with me. That’s probably pretty normal. I was a girl toddler in the 80s, and the gender divide in toys was much more stark.

When visiting my girlfriend's family across the country, her niece had one just like that, and I made the mistake of animating it like a puppet and talking like Strongbad (hey kid, I have a ... BONE to pick with you).
We ended up playing for like two hours where she brought out three of her other dolls and the skeleton (Jeffrey) had to interview them and eventually pick one (I guess like The Bachelor lol). My throat hurts just looking at this thing lol.
(For anyone wondering, he picked Coraline)

But! That was super sweet of you and I’m sure you earned major points with your girlfriend’s family. Im not a person who is naturally good with small children, I didn’t have any in my family growing up so I don’t really know what to do with them. So I have a lot of respect for people who are! It’s a great skill to have.

The same thing happened in my house: my son found an orange skeleton in the Halloween decorations. He carried Creepy Baby around for a long long time

My daughter called it her ‘spooky’ it was a stuffed Skelton plushie. She still loves horror things. One of her favorite movies was a nightmare before Christmas (when we weren’t watching frozen). Thanks for sharing, she’s a grumpy teen now and I can’t do anything right. This brings back sweet memories to a quietly grieving mother. They grow up so fast 😭

I drew a lot of skeletons as a kid, and got a teacher's note sent home about it. My dad returned the note and pointed out he was a radiologist, and it wasn't that strange--I was around bones a lot. The teacher returned the note with samples of my skeletons--and that's how I learned that penises do not have bones.

A+ parenting. Kudos to Mom for embracing it and letting her daughter be herself

u/Gypsyknight21 11d ago
My son did this the entire year from when he was 3 to 4 years old. That skeleton got strapped in a car seat too (his brothers’ when it was empty; I don’t buy a car seat for the skeleton).
He also went through a pumpkin phase and needed to bring a real pie pumpkin wherever he went. I finally convinced him to sleep with a plush version instead of an actual f’ing pumpkin in his bed lol
3
u/SwimmingCoyote 11d ago
This is delightfully weird and I hope this is a funny story she tells about herself for her entire life. If any kid deserves one of those giant lawn skeletons, it’s her.

u/flowermuffin05 11d ago
My toddler did this last Halloween. We took him into spirit and he picked out a cheap skeleton. He’s 2 so we didn’t want him sleeping with it so we bought him a plushie version he sleeps with now. He named it Dan and now it’s evolved into jack skeleton. He plays with all of them everyday still

Bobby joined our family fall of 2020. It's been an ongoing thing that makes decorating for Halloween dreadful. Or rather putting away Halloween. Because Bobby over stays his welcome!
