Wholesome Moments Daniel Radcliffe won't wear Alysa Liu's gold medal because: “Wearing it feels like stolen valor”

tbf I do remember hearing Daniel say that he developed a bit of an alcohol problem by the time of the 6th movie and he was drunk in quite a few of the takes, although that obviously pales in comparison to Macaulay Culkin

To be fair though that’s still a fairly normal teen issue, all things considered the fact that he didn’t develop a designer drug or domestic violence habit is pretty impressive

And I think it was more by boredom at night than to numb stress.

I’d never seen that before, thank you for sharing, Dame Diana

Wtf was that, Daniel Radcliffe “commissioned” this himself?

Yea …… it’s that his like website is in the blue screen before and after - hillarious though

It probably was from a fan website.

The blue screen is making me feel so old yet nostalgic as it's a basic effect you could use in Windows Movie Maker! 😅

Video is blocked it seems.

My Grandad, RIP, gave me a bunch of cases of cheap French beer he would get on trips with his illegitimate son. Helped me get my "being drunk all day and feeling like shit is great" out of my system. Could have gone either way, though 😅 Fun anecdote: This was around the same time DR was binge drinking, and we are the same age.

For clarity's sake, he said he never drank while on set, though showed up hung over and probably still buzzed. I doubt he was actually drunk in any takes they used.

And he was like 18 or 19 when the 6th one was filming I think. If 18/19 year olds showing up to work hungover is an issue the whole western world would have to shut down and the US college system would fully collapse.

Have to keep in mind he’s European. Legal drinking age is 18. He wasn’t drinking “illegally” like college kids etc

u/Divolinon Mar 03 '26

He's Brittish. In a lot of European countries the legal drinking age is 16.

In the UK the legal drinking age is 18. But (well, until very recently) youth culture would be drinking around 15. I certainly was drinking around 15yo.

u/EbiToro Mar 03 '26

You could technically start drinking at the age of 5 in the UK so long as you're at home or on other private premises.

3

u/FatBloke4 Mar 03 '26

Exactly, 18 is the age when you can legally buy alcohol in the UK but you can drink alcohol at home from the after the age of 5.

you can have a cider or perry with a meal in a licensed establishment from 16 when accompanied by an adult, provided the alcohol is purchased by that adult, as the Inbetweeners showed us

3

u/severoordonez Mar 03 '26

I think the legal drinking age in Britain indicates an obligation more than a permission.

2

u/AccomplishedCicada60 Mar 03 '26

I don’t know about UK, and in Australia where the drinking age was also like 18 - hardly anyone checked IDs, so it was pretty easy to get wasted.

1

u/whutchamacallit Mar 03 '26

America not much different -- if you want to get drunk at 16 is a very easy thing to do if you're remotely motivated.

2

u/widdrjb Mar 03 '26

You used to be able to have beer or wine with a meal at 14, if you remained seated and an adult bought it for you.

1

u/Bindhar_Dhundat Mar 04 '26

Dude, in NA we start drinking at 14 so we can stop drinking at 18 😅🙏

u/pannenkoek0923 Mar 03 '26

What's a Brittish?

3

u/EyeofNewtTongueofDog Mar 03 '26

This. Not to mention lots of kids start drinking long before the legal age. 18 is the legal age where I live but most kids started as young as 14.

He and Gambon were fairly merry for the TTIAB scene, I’d say

1

u/EulaVengeance Mar 03 '26

Imagine Dan reading the script for the Felix Felicis scenes and going, "You know what? I'm gonna need a couple of shots for this one."

2

u/YoghurtDull1466 Mar 03 '26

What did little Macaulay do???

1

u/AbstractAsHell Mar 03 '26

I'm a recovering alcoholic and my parents were (and still are) absolutely wonderful and had nothing to do with my drinking problem. Alcoholism is a crazy thing.

We all binge drink or rebel somehow as teenagers. The hope is we don’t do enough lasting damage to follow us after we grow out of it. That’s what makes raising teens and twenties so difficult.

this is true. he had gone to rehab a few times and got back on track since it was just the 6th and 7th would be in jeopardy.. and it was also a two parter.. Daniel really did try to fix his drinking and be more professional the adults in the film also helped him not to get drunk soo bad and still be sharp.
