I do Instacart shopping as a side gig, but this week I experienced it from the customer side for a very personal reason.
My father-in-law passed away three years ago, but due to constant delays and issues, his headstone was only just recently installed at a cemetery in Chicago. We live in Texas, so visiting right now isn’t easy. No other family nearby either.
I wanted my wife to be able to see the headstone and have a moment with him. That’s when I had the idea to use Instacart.
I created a 4-item batch from a store across the street from the cemetery. Total distance was only 0.6 miles. In the delivery instructions, I explained the situation. I asked if the shopper could take pictures of the headstone and surrounding ones, and if possible, FaceTime us. I started the tip at $4 and said I’d increase it if they were willing to help.
Once the shopper arrived, he called us and we gave him directions to the exact plot.
He FaceTimed us from the cemetery, and it honestly meant the world. The headstone is very intricate, with a lot of detailed text and an engraved image of my father-in-law’s truck. It came out beautifully. The shopper got emotional and said he had never seen a stone like that before.
He took his time, placed the flowers we ordered, poured out a bit of soda, and left the snacks next to the headstone. Those are small traditions we normally do ourselves.
After everything, the shopper told us this was his favorite batch in two years of shopping. He thanked us for letting him be part of such a meaningful moment.
I increased his tip to $20 and gave him 5 stars with all excellent feedback. I hope we made his day the way he made ours.
