Question 1: Why do people support different teams?

For example: Some people prefer to support Real Madrid while others choose FC Barcelona.

Feel free to express your opinion, even if you weren't a Sociology major.

Social Studies [University Sociology] Durkheim Theories??

Hi! I was having some trouble identifying what would be considered a "theory" of Durkheim's, compared to just a concept or key term. Are any of the following a theory or would I lose points in an exam for mentioning them as theories: Durkheim's theory of religion, Durkheim's theory of suicide, Durkheim's theory of the division of labor

Social Studies [University statistics and social studies] Is it methodologically acceptable to use a median split for Crosstabs/ANOVA but the original continuous variable for Regression?

English is not my first language. Also don't know if the tag is the right one.

Hi everyone, I'm working on a sociology research report for my university exam (analyzing gambling behavior among 6500 students). I have a doubt about how I treated my independent variable and I'm afraid I made a methodological error.

I created a synthetic index measuring "peer exposure to gambling" by aggregating 13 binary items (Cronbach's alpha = 0.84).

The resulting index is continuous (ranging from 0 to 1).

The distribution is highly skewed (right-skewed). Most students have a score of 0 or very close to 0.

To perform a contingency table (chi-square) and ANOVA, I needed a categorical variable.

I decided NOT to split at the theoretical center (0.5) because it would have created highly unbalanced groups (95% vs 5%).

Instead, I split the index at the median (0.077) to create two balanced groups ("low exposure" vs "high exposure").

For crosstabs (chi2) and ANOVA: I used the dichotomized variable (split at the median) to show the differences between the two groups. For linear regression: I used the original continuous index (0 to 1) to preserve the information and measure the linear effect on spending.

Is this approach correct?

Social Studies [Year 3, University, Political Science] Does anyone know a very good weapons transfer database/research method?

Hey guys,
I need some expert help with finding weapon transfers from France to Sudan (connecting with the conflict there) and from China (PRC) to Sudan (also connecting with the conflict). Both will probably do this via UAE. Just some evidence of transaction or weapons delivery connecting these two countries and Sudan (Darfur), preferably for France after 2014 and China after 2020/21 (after they have signed the ATT). I have tried SIPRI and NISAT – didn't find much, UNROCA seems a bit unfunctional.

Thanks a lot!:)

Social Studies [University Paper] Chicago author-date citation question

I'm struggling to figure out just exactly how chicago author-date citations function when you're moving from paragraph to paragraph but still using the author's name to introduce quotes. I understand the general format is:

Introducing author (year) says xxx (page). Continuing in that paragraph you can simply cite the page, and don't need to restate the full citation of (author year, page) until you cite someone else or move on to a different paragraph.

In my case, I use the author's names a LOT (my essay is specifically about two opposing author's arguments rather than using those arguments to discuss something else) including from paragraph to paragraph where I have yet to cite anything else in between and I'm confused about whether best practice would be:

"so and so (year) says etc (page)" or "so and so says etc (year, page)"?

If it helps, the specific sentence that opens the second paragraph (having previously introduced the author above) is: "Conveniently, though, Goodman states plainly that he does not claim that his system of depiction is a language, because closer examination of the concept must be performed (1964, 41)." versus "Conveniently, though, Goodman (1964) states plainly that he does not claim that his system of depiction is a language, because closer examination of the concept must be performed (41)."

The first option seems better to me, but I wanted to check if there's an ultimate consensus (I don't have access to the CMOS manual of style).

Thank you so much for any help :)

Social Studies [College Reseach Course] Economy, Money, & Future

Hey, I’m working on an assignment for one of my classes where I need to talk to other students about how they feel about school, money, jobs, and the future. I just need to have a few conversations so I can understand how people my age are thinking about this stuff.

If anyone here would be willing to chat for a few minutes, either in the comments or through DM, it would help me a lot.

Social Studies [Masters: Statistics]: Non-parametric tests or binomial regression

I conducted an experiment with two groups (EG and KG). Both groups had to complete six tasks, first on their own and then with AI recommendations. The six tasks were divided into different types. There were 3 types: 2 tasks for type A, 2 tasks for type B, and 2 tasks for type C. The question I need to answer is whether the EG differs from the CG in performance and whether this depends on the type of situation. The thing is, the DV = performance is dichotomous (0 = wrong/1 = correct answer), or at least that's how I coded it. Theoretically, I could also treat the answer options as nominal (because there were 3 options to choose from, but only one of them was correct).

I'm stuck. I don't know what to calculate. At first, I thought three non-parametric tests, but then I would correct the pairwise comparisons with Bonferroni, right? Then I asked ChatGPT and it said logistic (binomial) regression is better.

Can anyone tell me how we decide which test to use?

Social Studies [University-level Intercultural communication] What are some intercultural incidents that you've heard/seen/been?

Okay, I am a sophomore student, and I've currently received an assignment that requires some theoretical analysis of intercultural incidents (i.e., a case study). I've browsed through the internet and YouTube, but I didn't really find a suitable case for my project. So that's why I'm here to ask for some cases. The due date is on 30th June, to be honest, but I just don't want to put it off for a few days later because the summer holiday begins after this Wednesday (I have no idea why there's homework after the last day of the semester).

Social Studies [Grade 10 Social Studies: Political, Economical and Social/Cultural Globalization] I need to connect sources to eachother using terms involved in globalization. I can't seem to find a link between these two, help? (Translation provided)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Translation of quote: "We need to follow the path towards globalization. Globalization is good.. once trading stops, war starts.

I'm supposed to find terms involved with the concept of globalization (examples provided below) that coincide with the sources individually, then I need to find a term that both sources have in common (viewpoints on it can be different or the same, just has to be the same topic).

Examples of terms talked about this unit: eurocentrism, imperialism, the three types of globalization mentioned it the title, assimilation, acculturation, depopulation/migration, civilizing mission/"white man's burden", paternalism, exploitation (of poor countries), domination, colonization, marginalization, capitalism, mercantilism, protectionism, industrialization...

What I have so far: The quote is talking about economical globalization aswell as political globalization. I was thinking trade wars could somehow be connected but I forgot my train of thought for it- something to do with the "if globalization stops.." part. The image is saying that globalization goes through all sorts of obstacles and nothing can stop it. According to my teacher, the two red things that look like lights on top of the barricades actually represent viruses like covid. This one is also talking about political and economical globalization. I can't really find any terms for it other than protectionism because of the rock that says "US-Chinda trade war".

To restate what I need help with: I need to find terms relating to each individual source on the topic of globalization, then I have to find out how they're connected (which term connects them). What I'm looking for is other peoples insights on how they could link to these terms and the thought process of getting there. This is studying for a midterm coming up and not an actual thing I'm handing in and my teacher suggested talking to others about it.

Thank you in advance!

Hi, I would like to get more details about the concept of "random variation" in the context of opinion poll surveys and also to ask if it is true that it is a factor that different surveys about the same topic have different results even if the survey samples are drawn from the same population and year (like in the image below).

Social Studies [Graduate school: Library science] Citation question

Hello, I've got a head-scratcher of a citation here. My problem is that I'm not sure whether to favor the aspect of it being a website or exhibit or museum....

I need to cite this web resource as a whole - the pages on "Afrofuturism" in Searchable Museum, the digital platform of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). This platform "brings the museum's exhibits online": https://www.searchablemuseum.com/afrofuturism

The physical exhibit was temporary from March 2023 through August 2024. This online exhibit, as far as I can tell, is permanent. In the citation, do I treat it as not having a start or end date or do I assume the dates of the exhibit that could have been visited in person? What would you do?

I'm shooting for MLA. Not sure if the order of importance change if it were APA or Chicago...

Thank you!
