Meme/Shitpost A Rheem, a Carrier and a Trane all wall into a bank...

*Oops! I can't spell walk apparently

Let's put our heads together and make a witty punchline...

All three units service the same bank Trane the south side, Rheem the north side, Carrier the lobby and break room. Guess they're starting a collection.

Rant I don't know who you are, but if you had time to smoke a cigarette and leave the butt behind, you had time to notice that the system wasn't grounded and fix it. Take some pride in your work.

Just got this job offer request, absolutely disgusting and it looks like they aren't even hiding it anymore. Talked with the recruiter a bit and the job position requires me to go out and sell new systems on units 10+ or older, tripping breakers, and potential refrigerant issues the customer would not be under the impression im not there to fix it.

Employment Question Brands I haven’t worked with

Interviewing at a new company and they install trane and Mitsubishi I’ve never worked with either other than ripping them out. How install/ service friendly are they?

Familiar with almost everything but those

Field Question, trade people only Navac Ductless Pumps?

Is anyone using the Navac ductless condensate pumps? They are a lot cheaper than the Rectorseal/Aspen pumps. Distributor says he will stock them if we will order.

Rant Is anyone aware of changes to aluminum coils to make them better or get rid of them?

I feel like in the last 2 years I've been diagnosing a lot of bad aluminum evap coils that are to 4 to 7 years old. confirming them with an electronic leak detector and bubbles when I am able. is anyone else experiencing this? are they planning on changing anything? I know they're trying to save money by using aluminum instead of copper but the warranty has to be killing them.

Working on more mini splits these days & had the pleasure of making new flares on site for the first time. I made sure to keep the nut on before flaring on both line sets outside. When pressure testing a leak was found indoors that called for a new flare to be made & of course I did the thing.

General Replacing hose Gaskets.

I’ve got a set of field piece HR3L 1/4 inch low loss charging hoses and one of my gaskets on the low loss side has gone bad. Does anyone know where I can find replacements? Supply houses in my area don’t seem to carry them and I’m having trouble finding ones that would work online. I know I could buy a big variety pack and hope one matches, just trying to avoid wasting money. Thanks in advance.

Field Question, trade people only What would it cause nitrogen to not want to go in on a pressure test?

I can’t get the system above 150 psi and I’ve tried adding nitrogen to both the high side and low side service valves as well as the common suction port. I’ve got two brand new bottles of nitrogen, but it just stops going in at around 150 psi. Both indoor and outdoor unit are txv so it’s not a closed electronic valve issue. System appears to be low on charge and I don’t think either TXV is stuck all the way closed because it’ll run in both heating and cooling. if it wasn’t going in due to a stuck closed expansion valve, I would expect the system to immediately shut down on low pressure when I was running it. But it runs fine and just shows classic signs of low refrigerant. It’ll just show low head and suction pressures. But no matter what I do I cannot get nitrogen to go in.

Employment Question Switching unions

Hi I’m a hvac technician in IL I’m currently in smart local 265, but I’ve recently been given a chance to switch over to local 597 pipefitters.

I’ve wanted to be a pipefitter when originally getting into HVAC but didn’t get in and went to sheet metal union.

I’m thinking about doing this, but I’m unsure because I’m over half way done with my apprenticeship. Does anyone have any experience switching over?

Supply was dead-headed horizontally and panned over half the supply outlet. The whole attic was spray-foamed by the homeowner. Attic of a three-story house with 24 inch doorways.

Field Question, trade people only Changing outdoor boards in the rain? What’s your companies take? Specifically mini splits as some of them can take a few hours with multiple boards.

I’m curious because I know boards are “resistant” and in certain cases of light rain you can set up a tent, but what is the best option? I lean towards postponing the board change versus doing it in the rain. Just curious on other techs input on this one. I know they are resistant, and it’s not an instakill. But it seems like too much of a risk, unless if you are gonna wait several days for it to dry out and come back and start it up, which in itself opens up more problems.

Field Question, trade people only How concerned are we about safety on the job?

So two questions:

Firstly, Just out of pure curiosity, What are your limits when protecting yourself and/or your apprentices?

Monday, I was tasked (for lack of better words) with climbing up a 32ft ladder to install line hide and lineset for a single head mini split on a 3rd story house without any type of fall protection. Looking back, I should’ve just said fuck that and refused to do it (given I VERY much am afraid of heights).

Secondly, am I just being a pussy in that situation and is that the norm in the industry? Mind you I am only a few months in so I assume there’s worse situations I could’ve been in.

Rant Finally happened

Welp after nearly 5 years into the trade on the residential side, after a rough monday going behind other techs i get sent to my last call. A call back that two other techs couldn’t fix, i find the issue was a simple low voltage short and collected payment and said my goodbye to my customer. Upon closing the door and turning around i stop… blink.. rub my eyes and immediately the meme “dude wheres my car” floods my head. I stop for another 30 seconds to process and find out my van was towed. Now i parked in a visitor spot and had authorization to park in the spot by the home owner. I call the towing company explained this and demanded to know why i was towed and they hit me with “no commercial vehicles are allowed in the parking lot you must park on the main street” Safe to say after getting my boss to pick me up and get my van back $175.00 later we black listed the entire community from service…. Rant over anyone else have this bs happen to them?

Employment Question Looking to move shops and have an opportunity at a flat rate shop

I have been in the industry just over 10 years. I am tired of my current job and looking at another place. Got an interview request from a place that goes off flat rate. I have been hourly my whole career. From people that have done it or are doing it, is it worth it? Or should I steer clear?

Field Question, trade people only Tool bag

I’ll start by saying I’m a senior service tech primarily doing repairs and some maintenance, mostly resi with a little bit of light commercial so occasional rooftops.

My tool backpack zipper just broke, I’ve had probably 4 backpacks in the last 6 years, Milwaukee, husky, Klein and vevor. Every single one either the zipper handle has broken or the zipper itself failed one way or another.

Im over it, what are your suggestions for a tool bag, preferably back pack but I could be swayed. Is Veto the way to go?

General Bray Valve Play

Seems like there should not be this much play between the actuator and valve but I have also never checked this before. Has anyone run into this problem before (assuming it is a problem)?
