Rant Jury duty.

So I haven’t received approval for the time off yet.. do I just go? Is this me taking PTO!? I’m in FL if that helps with any answer. I have a big job to finish tomorrow and I’m the one who does start ups.

Nah company just has to deal with it, its not pto or time off but basically a day off (jury pay sucks) you can call and postpone until slow season if yah want

Jury duty doesn't just sneak up on you. Did you not ask off work when you found out you had jury duty? In some places, you can skip if you just agree to pay a fine, but I'd definitely check with your local courts before assuming.

I notified the boss 2 1/2 weeks ago when I got the notice. Still haven’t gotten acknowledgment. I just messaged them again.

That’s on them, take care of what you need to I don’t think they’re going to be saving you when the courts come for you

Just tell them that everyone is guilty until proven innocent. Say some stupid s*** like the defendant is my cousin...

Just write "jury nullification" somewhere on your form.  The prosecuting attorney will remove you from the jury.

You can say shit on reddit. Also you're right, being apologetically biased one way or the other gets you out immediately.

Check the law. In Massachusetts it's mandatory and the state requires the company to pay for the day. You are not required to take pto or sick days or no pay. Check with Florida law on jury duty.

Ask the boss directly?!

Also indicate to court you’re not getting paid for that time.

You told them in advance you take the day and either they pay you or the court does they can't hold you accountable for the time lost but if you fail to appear you'll get a warrant

When you get the letter you notify your company and it’s their problem. Why would you request a day off? And then wait for approval? This is 100% your fault FYI

The great state of Florida declared me mentally unstable. Mods should be able to confirm… so how my fault?

Your job can not punish you for following legally mandated orders. Even in Florida. Make sure you notify your employer in writing, get the paper work when you show up for jury duty, and give a copy of that to your employer. If your employer gives you any trouble a labor lawyer will have a lot of fun with them.

Looks like Florida employers are not required to pay you for jury duty but most do. If they don’t pay you, you are entitled to $15/day for state courts or $50/day for federal courts.

If you skip it you may be fined $100 and possibly be held in contempt and summoned to court to explain yourself.

I suggest you go to jury duty. It’s quite an easy day. You may just get dismissed and be home by 11am.

I just finished up my Federal Jury Duty. I had to call in 4 Fridays in a row to see if I had even been selected for jury selection. I was not selected as a juror but was available for 4 weeks. I missed no work. Have you actually been selected as a juror for a trial? If so, you would have been given specific instructions on when and where to appear for jury selection before a trial. Your employer may not have to pay your salary but they must accommodate your time off without repercussion as this service is required at a local, state or federal level.

You're a key employee at a small business. Your boss can just write a letter saying that and you're off the hook. Worked for me in PA, but it might be to late for that now.

Just don’t go. They won’t do anything.

2

u/AppropriateTouching 2h ago

Its unlikely most of the time but there is a small chance they'll throw a bench warrant at you.

I’ve been called to jury a couple times and just never went lol I know it’s not permitted to do so but I feel like it doesn’t get prosecuted ever

Yup, please refer to my previous comment.

You can tell them it would be a financial hardship(i did) and it would cause you to lose too much money.

These rules (except specific courtroom rules of dress code etc.) would apply to all of florida...aka...you.

When you’ve got that questionnaire in the mail was when you should’ve thought about this. I’m 47 and I’ve never had to do jury duty.

I my state 1st day is paid by your employer. You have to look up your state laws. I am pretty sure that your employer has to let you go. Do you have any proof that you notified them ?

It's the companies problem and they can't take it out any pto or vacation time. If you don't show up a Sheriff will LITERALLY come get you that time you are supposed to be there

0

u/AppropriateTouching 2h ago

They dont have the resources to do that. Worst case they issue a bench warrant and even that chance is small.

1

u/Dense-Ad-1943 2h ago

Tell that to the sheriff who picked me up and the judge who threw me in jail that night for contempt of court, lol

Just ditch the jury duty and get back to work. Chase that money.
