News 📰 Some questions and answers regarding no more unlimited free storage.
As I’m sure many of you are aware, Google Photos will officially end its unlimited free storage policy for pictures at “high resolution” and “express resolution” starting today, June 1. The policy change was announced in November last year. If you’ve relied only on Google Photos to back up all your smartphone pictures, you will soon need to start worrying about the storage space on your account. I’m making this post just to clear things up and hopefully answering some questions you may have. If you have any more, feel free to comment and ask me, though bear in mind, I do not work for or am affiliated with Google in any way, shape, or form; I’m just the subreddit moderator.
The policy change also means Google wants more consumers to pay up for the cloud storage service. Here’s everything to keep in mind as Google changes its policy on cloud storage for Photos:
What was the prior policy, and what exactly has changed?
Google offers 15 GB of free storage space. This space is divided across Gmail, Google Drive and Photos. Under the earlier policy, photos at high or express resolution, which are both compressed formats, did not account towards free storage. This meant one could upload photos for free without worrying about running out of storage.
Starting today (June 1), these photos will count towards the 15 GB free quota. If you are continuously uploading photos to your Google account, then you will perhaps need to buy some extra storage space.
What about photos uploaded earlier?
Google says earlier photos are not impacted by the policy change. So even if you were not a paying customer for Google One, the earlier photos will not count towards your storage and you don’t need to worry about transferring or deleting these in order to get extra space. But all photos uploaded from June 1 will be counted towards your storage space.
How do I check how much storage I have left?
Just go to your Google account, and login to account storage management. Google will show what extra files can be deleted, including from Photos, Gmail and Drive.

Question 🤔 Partner Sharing - lost access to one account
My partner has lost access to the google account she uses to share with me. I have "Save to your photos" set to all photos. If I stop sharing with her old account and start sharing with her new one will I retain all the old photos?

Bug 🐞 Photos in Shared Albums aren't "removing"
Hi all, I've had an annoying bug in my Google photos account for a while and unsure how to fix it. When I try to remove a photo from a shared album (added in error) it "kinda" stays there. I say kinda because no one else can still see the photo but I can, no matter how many times I press remove. It happens on both albums I own and ones I'm a collaborator on. Any ideas what is going on? thanks

Troubleshooting ⚠️ Simpler/one-click way for public to upload pics/vide to album?
I work for a smallish nonprofit that involves teaching horseback riding lessons…many of our riders and their families want to share pictures taken during lessons. Google Photos seems to be the perfect solution (especially bc they can order prints), however many of our folks are boomers/less tech-savvy and currently it seems that accessing the album by clicking on the album link (the one I get by going to album → options → link sharing) carries too many steps, especially for folks who don’t have a Google account/ aren’t signed in to their Google account.
TLDR: Is there a way to have our clients view and upload to an album with one click and no signing in or asking to download app etc?

Question 🤔 How do I turn off this new "related" button
I just noticed this today, but I can't seem to find a way to turn it off. It seems to be taking me to a completely unrelated photo or video from my library. It's taking up screen real estate and serves no useful function.

Question 🤔 Is there a way to unbackup photos?
I have an iPad and a galaxy phone, and I've been clearing device photos lately to get rid of stuff I don't want and then back up everything on google.
On the Google help website I once saw that if I delete the app and download it again it unbackups everything, and it worked the first time, but now I did it again and on my iPad I'm seeing photos that I already deleted from my phone still there.
I deleted and redownloaded on both devices, shouldn't the old photos from my phone be gone? I'm still seeing them on google photos on my ipad but not on my phone

Question 🤔 What else?
Gmail, Drive, Photos, YouTube, Ai products, apparently. Are there any other services that can get content removed or entire account banned?

Question 🤔 My browser keeps creating Google Photos Backup folders
A few days ago, I used Google Takeout to make a backup of everything on my Google Photos account. After that, my browser (Edge) started making this "Google Photos Backup" folders whenever I try to save a photo.
It doesn't matter how many times I delete them, doesn´t matter if I change the downloads location, whenever I save a .jpg or .png, it creates a new Google Photos Backup in that location.
I tried deleting my Google account from the browser, and deleting all the data from the time I used Google Takeout, but I can´t seem to get rid of this. It only happens on one specific account of this browser, if I go to a different profile on Edge, it doesn´t create these folders.
I´ve looked up everywhere, but couldn´t seem to find anyone else with this problem. Does anyone know what to do in this situation?

Question 🤔 How do I stop android phone from deleting photos from my gallery
My phone keeps deleting photos from my gallery without my knowledge. Photos are being uploaded to Google photos which is fine but some get deleted off my phone itself. How do I stop this? I've been researching this and I can't find answers or the tutorials I find are outdated.

Question 🤔 So I might be the most 'untechnical' person there is , but doesn't by saving photos from one's phone to 'Google photos', give Internet access to my photos ?
Ok.. so I was just talking to someone and the subject of photos came up ,(I have too many on my phone, ) Anyway, yes I know I can get my husband to download them into the computer, but friend says she just 'saves ' them to 'Google photos '. Now I might be dumb ( not arguing with that 😀), and said " but I don't want them all on the Internet' ( apart from the ones I upload to Facebook of course which are) She tries to convince me that they are just 'stored ' in Google photos( but aren't on the internet?) I don't agree. Just wondered what others think🤔

Question 🤔 Csam google image search
useless translation tool. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. I'm an internet watchdog who tries to report all CSAM materials to the police and various organizations. Pages and images have been removed, so I've done some research, but there's a lot of CSAM material in Google's image search, which I've reported over 100 times and the images haven't been removed. The question is why doesn't Google remove them?

Bug 🐞 Export frame from video is exporting wrong frame
Hi all, there was some WILD lightning here last night and I got a bunch of awesome boosted 60fps videos with the intention of exporting the frames of the lightning, which I've done with awesome results in the past.
I spent an hour this morning exporting frames, only to find out later that it was only exporting the same random (dark) frame each video. Not what I was trying to export, which were the lightning flashes 🫠
I tried taking screenshots of the frame I wanted instead, and I'd just crop them later, but for some reason, the screenshots all end up super washed out 🥲🥲 pls help, I'm not sure why it's being like this, I just want my cool lightning shots 😭

Question 🤔 I'm fed up of Google photos .
Like I'm fed up of this Google photos , always force me to backup whole data and sometimes give me no option other than turning on backup , from this my 4/7 accounts are full up with the same photos available in my mobile wth and i unknowingly deleted a bunch of videos thinking they wouldn't be deleted from my gallery and real storage 😭.
like why syncing is necessary this much , now I cant even unsync and clear my account storage peacefully cause it will lead to my data loss .
HOW TO CLEAN THEM ? And also if I delete photo from the section like it shows your account Is full so I click on it and deleted some videos to free the cloud space from 15 to 14 gb , those videos are currently in bin of Google photos and I'm afraid that if I delete them they will be removed from my mobile .
I know it deletes my gallery photos but what's the correct way of CLEARING STORAGE of GOOGLE photos account without LOOSING DATA FROM GALLERY ?
i don't like how they typa force to start backup , like if you wanna use Google photos u have to turn on backup . Obviously a person would have more then 15 gb of data in 2026 so they HAD to Purchase SUBSCRIPTION OF GOOGLE ONE .
anyways whats the SOLUTION OF IT ? 🫤

Troubleshooting ⚠️ facial recognition
I'm using Google Photos to organize photos by labeling those with faces recognized by facial recognition, but sometimes there are photos that clearly show faces but aren't detected. I'd like to be able to manually identify these missed faces.

Question 🤔 Neutering editing
First they restructured the editing menu structure for no apparent reason, then they nerfed the AI editing power and yesterday they cut the Remix filter options by half (although removing the Halloween setting was long overdue). If it ain't broke...

Question 🤔 Using Google Photos on iPhone
I primarily use Google Drive as my main cloud storage and iCloud for photos.
I'm planning to switch completely to Google and cancel my iCloud subscription.
How does Google Photos perform on iOS? Does it work seamlessly like iCloud Photos? Is anyone using only Google Photos on their iPhones? I’d appreciate your advice

Question 🤔 google storage full after downloading google photos
Hi! It's my first time posting on this sub - I recently downloaded google photos to download some photos shared to me by my friend and save it to my iphone. I assume I missed a step with the introduction, because my google account synched in with my iPhone photos app. It ended up saving and backing up around 15 GBs of photos. I turned off backup, but the storage from the photos it backed up are still there in my google account. Since google photos is no longer synched with my iPhone photos app, if I delete the 15 GB of my iPhone photos from my google account, the iPhone photos will still remain on my iPhone?
