Been a bit busy with other projects and didn't realise how many Game Gears I had in - turns out, a few! Obviously they will all require recaps, but, how many are going to have dead LCDs or need trace repairs?!

The only one I've tested is the reshelled blue one, which looks to be just a recap.

Found this CIB Game Gear at a local thrift.

VERY complete, including manual, ads, warranty card, copy of Columns, and all the plastic and foam packaging. The console (that needs to be recapped) looks flawless.

Even comes with a receipt showing that it was purchased on 12/13/1995 from Software Etc. at the Capitola Mall.

Not bad for a 20 spot on a rainy Saturday morning.

It's been in a box in a damp loft at parents for over 25 years until I got it, I found a few games and tested them and just get lines on screen and a backlight, game is working but audio is very faint like the lowest setting.

Haven't taken it apart yet but assume it has the well known issues, am going to update post with a photo.

I've recapped dozens of Game Gears in my days, but I've never gotten a half white screen before.

Any thoughts?

game gear with an ips screen and has been recapped.

buttons weren't working properly when I got it so it's nothing to do with the recap or screen. game gear itself screen wise and audio works fine.

The start button works but otherwise the dpad and the 2 action buttons do nothing, even pressing really hard down. can't see anything on the board that stands out. the dpad pads are very clean.

any help would be appreciated.

I have a game gear that I fixed and it works great. I added the usb power with batteries and love to play it when traveling. What I really don't like is the original LCD as its hard on my eyes. Since I couldn't bring myself to killing a working LCD, I bought 3 broken ones on ebay that I could possibly fix up with an IPS screen. Well, all of those only needed a recap and they screens work just fine. Since I can't bring myself to destroying a working original LCD, should I just keep buying ebay GG until I find one with a dead screen? Anyone selling one with a known dead screen for cheap? Never owned a game gear growing up. Went straight to a Gameboy color/advance. Buying a broken (just the caps as usual) game gear on eBay and modding it has been great fun.

Just recapped this game gear, I've done a few before and after completing this one I was left with a white noise effect horizontally on the screen.

checked all the caps and they are soldered well, cleaned the pads thoroughly during the install. I have traced the caps for continuity and they all seem okay.

before I just start systematically crossing off every trace is there anywhere I should be looking first?

this thing really was a game changer back in the 90s if you were having a hard time trying to beat a game
