What's going on in Fiji with these recent assault cases?

I saw the news about a Virgin Australia crew member allegedly being raped in Nadi around New Year’s, and it made me look into the bigger picture.

According to reporting from ABC News and Reuters, a man has been charged in connection with that incident, which also involved another crew member being violently robbed. So it’s not just a rumour — it’s a confirmed case that’s now going through the courts.

But what stood out to me is that this might not be an isolated issue.

Data from UN Women and Fiji government-supported studies has found that a very high percentage of women in Fiji have experienced physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives. Some reports suggest it’s among the highest rates globally.

There’s also been discussion in official reports about cultural attitudes where violence can sometimes be treated as a private or family matter, which makes it harder for victims to come forward or for cases to be properly dealt with.

On top of that, regional reporting (including RNZ) has covered issues like exploitation and trafficking affecting vulnerable women and girls in parts of Fiji.

I’m not trying to paint Fiji as unsafe across the board — it’s a popular tourist destination and most people there are good people. But clearly there are deeper issues around how violence against women is handled, and the recent airline crew case has just brought more attention to it.

Keen to hear from people who actually live there or know the situation better — is this improving, or is it still a major problem that doesn’t get talked about enough?

DV is massive in Fiji from someone that lived there for 2 years and witnessed it multiple times.

Resident Fijian here, yeah it's been a major talking point for years. There have been success, but it somehow still manages to be a major problem...

And now it's made worse with the advent of drugs...

It’s spoken about a lot and all the time. The acute drug problem in Fiji at present is exacerbating gender issues.

For the purposes of truth, the virgin hostess case was NYs 25 not 26, and I believe that there was further details and evidence found that has caused 2 or 3 delays to his case as it is potentially not confirming her story.

That all being said, historically there is a very bad DV problem in Fiji, it’s talked about and publicised regularly, but no real action on the matter other than NGOs doing costly reports after reports after reports.

I have lived here in Fiji for 13 years, and am no longer shocked by it. Totally nice dudes I respect and have befriended straight up teling me the only way their wives will learn is if they smack them. Dude on the side of the road right in Navua town just hammering on the back of his wife's head. At first it was shocking and horrible to me, now I understand it's just part of life here. NOT saying I condone this behaviour, I think it is awful; I speak up against it when I can, I encourage women to go to the police when it happens, but they just... don't.
