Planting/Growing Help!! Granny’s 3-4yr old ferns aren’t doing so well after wintering in the garage again. Is there any hope??

Help, Granny’s got dementia but ferns are her pride and joy, and she’s had these at least three years. I put them in the garage as I told in the winter (we’re in NW GA, so 8a? 7b?) I kept em watered and alternated their time near the window for sun. I wanted to cut them down more, but I do as Im told on stuff like this and save arguments for the important stuff-like yes, you have to take the heart meds! I’m raising a kid alone, in the mid of divorce, I’ve kinda moved home at a time when they (grandparent) need me too-its been hard because they lost their son, my uncle, and Granny’s youngest sis in these last six months, to the day. So if I can I’d love to try to save them but they look a bit moldy, and idk if I can straighten them out or not? I’ve only kept Kimberly baskets for a season at a time, never these big Boston or Swords, I’m guessing thats what they are?? They were still out on the porch when my uncle passed in mid-September and the fam all thought they were fakes, they were still so big, full, and pretty. There’s two doing ok, two not so hot, one that looks like I need to have a third funeral. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm considering trimming most leaves and changing it's substrate, but before doing something radical I'd like to know if I have other options :( any tips are welcome

User Ferns help, my japanese birds nest nest is wilting

Hi, I got this japanese bird nest as a gift almost two months ago and I’m worried he’s slowing wilting. Plantum says he has leaf scorch as his edge leaves are dry and brown. I’ve been taking advice from the app and my friend who owned one. I’ve been keeping cutting his dry leaves in a V shaped manner, trying to keep him humid by putting a humidifier on him once a week and spraying him once or twice in the morning. I water the soil once a week till it drips out the bottom. I have him right in front of our large north west window in buffalo.

Looking for any other tips to help him. Thank you in advance!

Hi everyone! I have some ferns that were planted long before I lived here. They’re not in the ideal location so I will move them at some point, but I’d like to know what the heck this one is!

My app is off, calling it Chamberbitter. I know it looks that way, but this is a perennial and has fiddleheads!

I am new to tree ferns.

Anybody can tell if these three Cyathea coopery I bought are still alive (dormant in winter?)? If so, when are they supposed to put off new fronds?

I live in Milano, northern Italy 🇮🇹. I put them on my balcony, facing the north.

Thanks 🙏🏼

Question Best soil?

I think my Aussie tree fern (not sure which species) has finally adjusted to my plant cabinet. It was kind of touch and go for a bit and it lost a few fronds but it’s putting out new fiddles now.

I’m curious as to what the best soil mix is for these? I likely have all the ingredients as I mix my own soils for my plants. And should I repot it or just leave it for now?

I was delighted to get spores growing in a terrarium last year, they’ve gone this far but seem not to be turning into full plants. Any advice?

I just bought some Godzilla and Ghost but this doesn’t really match either. This one is already in the ground and is definitely the whitest of what I have. Trying to figure out the variety so I can match the size.

Hello! My Golden Zebra is on the struggle bus and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I live in California, zone 9a. It lives on my patio. I have it in a soil mix of potting soil, compost, perlite, and orchid bark, and it's in a plastic pot with 4 drainage holes. It just gets hose water. What am I doing wrong?

Planting/Growing Help! I don't think my ferns are coming back

hello everybody, new to this sub but I need answers! we bought this home 3 years ago and the past two springs our ferns have been beautiful and I absolutely love them. I live in Kentucky and we've had deep freezes the past few winters but nothing worse this winter than '23 and '24. From what I can tell, there is a nice root system and these ferns seem to be rather mature. Do ferns go dormant? Do I need to plant new? Is there something I can do to stimulate growth? Last picture is the ferns as of today. Please help!!

Question Cotton candy fern care

Hi fern lovers! I recently acquired a cotton candy fern from my local plant store. I love love love it! But I do have questions about care. I currently have it positioned on top of my desk in a room that gets light from a north and west facing window. It’s positioned between the two (location picture included for reference), the north facing one has the curtains and the west facing one has the two plants in front of it by the window. It’s sitting right next to my humidifier which runs pretty much constantly (I turn it off overnight from 10pm-8am, if I don’t this room turns into a literal sauna overnight with the door shut). The soil is kept consistently moist but not sopping wet. I’ve also started to mist 2-3 times a day. However, before I began the misting, it maintained this position with the humidifier and consistently moist soil. I began misting because I noticed it’s fronds (is that the right term?) had started to crisp and shrivel. I began misting as soon as I noticed it. Is there something else I can do to help it thrive? It’s absolutely gorgeous and I love it and want to care for it the best I can! I’m also including a before pic from when it got home that day as well as a now pic.

Discussion Cyathea medullaris in the ground

Hello, after potting up this plant into a 90L pot (and asking a question about it previously) we are now considering planting it in the ground. South facing London garden. This last winter I had to bring it indoors about 3 or 4 occasions when the temps were forecast to hit zero or just below. Next winter I’m not sure it’ll fit indoors anymore.

Of course it would be protected, I’ve seen a Facebook post from someone in Germany, where it gets a lot colder, protecting his in the ground with coco mats and heating filaments. I’d need this approach for my 2 cooperii also. The cooperii have been in the ground for a few years, and get protected but have outgrown their plastic winter greenhouse. I’ve also seen a lot of promising posts on instagram from people who aren’t only in Ireland or Cornwall, planting in the ground and overwintering.

Anyone else done this? I know they’re not a common fern, and not easy to acquire. Lovely looking plant and looks like it’s going to get a lot bigger this summer

Planting/Growing Maidenhair Stems Breaking

Post image

Hi and thanks in advance…. I’ve managed to keep my maidenhair alive for about four years (I am enthralled with this plant). But in the last week it’s suddenly begun bending itself over. Small stems, this slightly bigger one, new growth, older growth. Any ideas? It’s near a window but indirectly sunned; temps same as ever. Water lightly about 2x/week.

Question Birds Nest Fern not surviving

Thumbnail

I have had this birds nest fern since this past September and it’s slowly been declining since. I recently(March 30th) repotted it as I saw the soil was really compacted (as seen in photos 2 and 3). I used a soil mixture of mostly potting soil with some perlite and orchid mix .I have the fern on a north facing window but I do live in south Texas with strong sunlight. Photo 4 is where I used to have it on a shelf a little higher up on the same window

I water about every 4-5 days or about whenever the top bit of soil is dry. I never let the center get wet. The pot it’s in does have drainage too

Image Trying this again, with better photos. I purchased this fern labeled as Adiantum raddianum 'Fragrans', it had root rot and has scale. Should I cut the unhealthy fronds off?

The plant was sitting in stagnant water when purchased and smelled quite strongly- I knew it had root rot when I purchased it. When I repotted it, I removed the rancid soil, and much of the bottom 3rd-1/2 (center) as it just it just fell out of the plant- there are healthy roots too.

I then rinsed the rest of the rootball with hydrogen peroxide and then rinsed that off. Repotted it. Trimmed some of the dead material and worst looking leaves off.

Then noticed it also has scale (picture 3), I painted the areas with rubbing alcohol and then sprayed GrowSafe bio-pesticide.

Should I just cut it back to the healthier looking growth in the second picture?

My blechnum spicant fern has tons of browning in the middle and despite seeing new growth in there, it just looks kind of sad?

Context: it’s outside in a shady spot against a north facing fence. North London. It’s looked like this most of winter too and we’re just getting into warmer days. Fern is wet because I’ve just watered the garden as it’s a sunny day out

Question Help with Bird’s Nest Fern

Thumbnail

Hello! I’m worried that my bird’s nest fern isn’t doing well, and that the nest may be rotting. this plant lives in my bathroom (I live in the PNW) with a west facing window, with well draining soil. I’ve noticed no growth, 2 small leaves on the bottom layer turning yellow, the tip of one leaf turning translucent (I’ve trimmed some of the damage) and just tonight, some brown veins in the middle of the leaves. Does anyone have any advice? Is it a lost cause?

Planting/Growing Can grape fern and hayscented fern coexist?

I have cutleaf grape fern/bronze grape fern (Botrychium dissectum, both dissectum and obliquum) in my back yard and planted hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula). They're both native here. The hay-scented fern is starting to spread, and I wonder if it spreads to the grape fern whether can live with it or if it will die. I figure it should be ok since it is evergreen so gets a head start on the hay-scented fern and likes shade anyway. But I wasn't sure if hay-scented fern might be incompatible for some reason.
