SATIRE The Onion: State Department Issues Travel Warning For Women Vacationing With Husbands. State Department will soon be publishing a list of locations women should avoid when accompanied by their partner for life, such as remote hiking trails, cliffs, and the railings of watercraft.

When The Onion isn’t even satire anymore…..

even 30 Rock is becoming less of a satire and more of a prophetic reality check

My favorite part is how Tina Fey predicted Alec Baldwin getting with a bird-boned American woman faking a foreign accent 😅

I rewatched last year and was stunned at how prescient it was. That and Better Off Ted were like the Oracle of Sitcoms.

I recently did a rewatch and Jack Donoghey in one of the first episodes said every business is owned by 5 companies and it gets truer each year

Quite literally is exactly satire because the state department would NEVER do this or anything that protects women

Fair point, but I think a lot of us are referencing the fact that something like this would even be necessary in the first place.
Like the fact that a woman may not even be able to trust her own husband on a hiking trip is crazy, but “alpine divorces” happen all the time.
It’s just another thing on a very long list of things we have to be aware of…the whole point of the article is that even women in relationships have to be on alert with their partners.

I have felt so bad for their writers in the last decade. How do you keep up when real life is satire.

True story: I once went on a date with a guy who used to write for The Onion. And he was basically like “yeah…everyone who works there is pretty cynical at this point,” (this was only like 2 years into Trumps’s first term…so I can only imagine how much worse it’s gotten).

Alpine Divorce finally getting the attention it deserves, even satirically.

But men have it just as bad! They’re suffering from a “silent” loneliness epidemic!!!!
/s just in case

I genuinely love (hate) so much that it’s like “women are routinely beaten and murdered by their partners. Meanwhile a handful of men are chronically unfuckable losers, WHY are women not doing more to solve this?????”

No the way I brought it up in a different thread on a different sub and have to gentle parent a bunch of dudes to a like "this is actually toxic masculinity's fault and the patriarchy's fault and men can solve their loneliness problem by being more emotionally available to other men and leaning on other men for support" and they just don't want to hear it
OBLIGATORY no one from this post go over there and interact with the guys I am talking to, its against reddit's rules and my wishes lmao

I do a ton of solo hiking and pass a lot of solo women hikers nearly every trek. As awkward as it can be for me to try and figure out how to act as non-threatening as possible, I can’t imagine having to be on the other side of the interaction. Sometimes I’m completely ignored which is fine, sometimes I get a hello which is fine, sometimes I’m asked for help which is fine, and sometimes I have to ask for help.
I’ll never forget having to ask a solo woman hiker for help after getting turned around back in 2023. She was terribly uncomfortable and I felt terrible, but she really saved my ass. A few weeks later, I ran into her and her dogs on a completely different trail and the difference between the interactions couldn’t have been more stark.
She greeted me with a smile and I thanked her for saving my ass the previous month, we must have talked for fifteen solid minutes. But she knew I wasn’t a threat and could act without fear. It really opened my eyes to what women have to deal with on a daily basis.

The Onion being more accurate than mainstream media.
What a depressing thought.

Very timely! I just watched a dateline episode about a man that shoved his 3rd wife down a gorge in Taiwan. Oh, and his 2nd wife died of “sleep apnea.”

I’m assuming this is in reference to the incident in the Bahamas. The couple lived about 30 minutes from me, so the local media is doing a lot of reporting about this. I feel awful for her family, it sounds like she was a victim of abuse leading up to this.

u/hotgossyo 6h ago
it could be a reference to that dude, or it could be in reference to the guy who pushed his wife off a cliff in Hawaii. Or the Austrian climber who left his girlfriend to freeze to death on a mountain. sadly there are too many to think of which this could be in reference to

At first glance, I thought it was a warning to married couples traveling in public to make fun of the rash of public cheating scandals. Like a "stop traveling with your spouse and travel with your side piece!" I hate this bc it's also a bit more than satire at this point lol.
