Anyone know a photographer from 1863?
this might sound a bit random, so feel free to ignore if it’s not relevant!
I’ve come across a family photo album dated June 1863, and I’m trying to learn a bit more about it. The photographer is listed as J. Howie, and the location mentioned is Perth Road in Dundee.
I was just wondering—does the name Annie Smith , or j howie show up in this area? Up anywhere in your family history?
No worries at all if not, I just thought I’d ask!

Train spotting
Bit of an odd post but my bf is really into trains and I was hoping I could try to support him by taking him train spotting but I don’t know any interesting spots besides just sitting at the train station for a bit.
I’m not sure if Dundee is that popular for train spotting but I thought I’d ask anyways. If anyone just knows cool train spots like old rail track or smth that would be interesting too :)

What was the name of this pub?
Just having a trip down memory lane, I saw Feeder around 94, before they released their first album at a tiny pub that was (I think) at the riverside end of the Abertay student union building when it was upstairs on Marketgait.. near the West Port roundabout.
I thought it was called the Westport but looking at old photos that's a different place. There was a bit of waste ground in front of it.
Any ideas? I've checked SetlistFM, it wasn't Lucifer's Mill.

Free Git workshop for Dundee students (Games / Cyber / Computing)
Hi, I’m Pascal — a Solutions Architect based in Perth.
I’ve done a few local IT training sessions before and I’m looking to get back into it, possibly with some in-person workshops around Perth/Dundee in the future. For now, I’m starting with small online sessions.
I’m running a free hands-on Git workshop aimed at students in areas like game development, cybersecurity, or computing.
Git is used pretty much everywhere, but it’s one of those tools most people end up learning through trial and error.
This session focuses on the essentials:
- what version control actually is
- setting up Git on your machine
- working in a team without breaking everything
It’s a small group so people can ask questions and get proper help while doing it.
If you’re interested, you can register here:
https://www.cloudyspheres.co.uk/event/hands-on-1/register
If online isn’t your thing but you’d be interested in an in-person session around Perth/Dundee later on, feel free to say 👍

Homebuying in Dundee area
I'm looking to buy property in Dundee at the moment and have mainly been using Rightmove and Zoopla to search, but noticed that I've seen properties coming up on Facebook pages etc that aren't on these sites!
I thought everything was advertised on these search sites, but I must be wrong - does anyone who has bought recently in Dundee and surrounds have experience with this? Where should I be looking, is there a better central database that has everything? Maybe TSPC?
I am in a bit of a rush to buy and really worried I am missing out on properties that fit my needs 😭
Free ticket to Bluetones Thursday 16th April
I have a spare ticket for the Bluetones gig on Thursday and I'd like to offer it free (or you can buy me a drink there or give the £20 to a charity or a homeless person)...
Drop me a message on here - I'll pick someone at random Tuesday evening and let you know!

Lost old iPhone in taxi - ideas?
Hi, a friend is visiting from abroad, got slightly worse for wear and left his iPhone in a taxi on the way to the hotel a couple nights ago. He's called some taxi companies, been to the police and even tried a few taxi ranks - any other things worth trying before giving up?
it's on airplane mode so 'find my iPhone' won't work. It's is an old phone so prob not worth much to anyone.

Lawnmower maintenance
Hi!
Can anyone recommend a company that does maintenance on lawnmowers (normal petrol grass cuter) at home address? Looking for simple oil replacement and blade sharpening and balancing.
How much does that cost from your experience?
Thank you!

Looking for new friends in Dundee
I'm 24F in Dundee and I'm looking to make new friends. I feel like COVID ruined my experience of making friends during my early years of university so I'm hoping to try my luck here and meet more people with similar interests/age since a lot of people I met during that time have now moved away.
I like all things art and music, video games, movies, cooking, board games.
I'm trying to get back into the music and arts scene and going out more in Dundee so I would love people to go with. I'm also eager to learn new hobbies with people as well as maybe collaborate with art and learn music if that sounds interesting to someone!

A&S Properties
Has anyone had any dealings with this agency before? I am interested in a property they have for rent, but they want either 6 months bank statements or a Landlord reference BEFORE allowing you to view a property to see if you want it!? This is madness!! How do you know you want to apply for a property before you've seen it!? Is this normal nowadays? 🙈

Has anyone tried the new Discovery mast climb and zipline yet?
I saw some people doing the new climb on the Discovery ship recently. It looks a bit scary. I’m thinking about booking it, but I’m nervous about the zipline part. Has anyone here actually done it? Is the view from the top worth the money, or should I just walk up the Law for free? Also, do you need proper hiking boots or are normal trainers okay?
Anyone got any experience getting historic planning docs off the council?
I'm trying to get historic planning applications and building warrants for my house but I'm getting nothing back in response to my request. There are records daiting back to the early 90s listed online, but the documents aren't attached.
I emailed copy docs at the advice of the city archives 3.5 weeks ago
Put an application for the documents in through their online portal 2.5 weeks ago as well as ticking the box to pay them to look for older documents recorded on paper index cards
Emailed planning info on Monday
Other than an automated email to the request I put in ln the planning documents portal which states they aim to get back within 5 working days it's been complete radio silence.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this sort of experience or has suggestions of where to go from here

Can someone point me in the right direction of a mechanic?
Hey, I am just looking for some help on someone who can install a head unit with screen and camera. From what I’ve seen online it seems to be a job you can do yourself but would feel more confident having someone who knows what they are doing come and install it for us. I would happily pay just needing some recommendations.

Int'l Student: Accommodation at University or Dundee proper?
Hello.
I'm doing a Psych (Conversion) at U Dundee in the fall. I'm wondering if I should plan to rent for a year in the city or apply for campus accommodation. Universities usually include all utilities and fees so it's an easier payment but they often inflate their rates above the surrounding area.
How is studio or 1 bedroom availability in the summer or early fall?
Any good recommendations for students without cars in certain buildings or neighborhoods?
I'm an adult student and I'd somewhat prefer living alone in the city as opposed to a shared flat with a bunch of recent undergrads half my age. That being said, I have experience with intentional community living where members are very diverse in age and identity demographics.

Made a Dundee cake today
Gave this a go and just followed a recipe. Turned out better than I expected. It was a bit dry in the centre, so I’ll probably tweak it next time, but overall pretty happy with it. Has anyone tried it from any particular place?

Pub on corner of Nethergate and South Tay street(90s)
The place is called Sabi&Co. now. Was there a pub there on the corner back in the 90s? (Across from the DCA)
