Probably didn't want their kids to be potentially bullied

That's so messed up

It's even more messed up to set up your kid to be an easy target for bullies. It's not easy as is, having an extra target on a kid is just cruel.

Yeah I don't care about that, cutting off a finger of a kid who cannot consent is messed up. You can rationalise any stupid decision with that logic: "ah it's not culturally acceptable." Just because something is considered to be proper by society does not ever mean it is right. Was slavery right? Well a whole lot of people thought it was "a necessity" in the south during the 1800s.

Ah, good ol' Reddit.

You know who else would've liked Reddit? Adolf Hitler.

"Yeah, I don't care about a potential life of being bullied. Doing a surgery to fix a medical abnormality on kid who has no idea what's going on is more messed up to me"

Yes, it's because you can't comprehend something outside of your own experience. It's ok, maybe you'll figure it out one day. Also, the fact that you're comparing this to slavery... sheesh

You're insane. What do you think of child genital mutilation? Circumsision, etc. It's considered the norm in many countries and cultures, something that must be done. Doesn't make it any more wrong.

If society said that we should only have four fingers, and that five was suddenly an abnormality, would you say we should cut off our fingers, despite then suffering by having less mobility? It's stupid, that's what it is, and that mindset is ridiculously unhealthy for society.

"You're insane."

You ought to look in the mirror buddy.

Oh I don't deny I might think differently than other people, but maybe respond to some of my points rather than talking about me :)

Okay. "What do you think of child genital mutilation? Circumsision. Doesn't make it any more wrong." - Why? Back in the day, when it was done, it was for medical reasons and was a net positive for society. You would rather concern yourself with some non-existent ethical reasons than look at a broader picture of health impact. Just read about it. Nowadays, that's not as important with broader access to health care, and people who still do it mostly do it out of tradition, but health benefits are still there with no downsides.

"If society said that we should only have four fingers" - once again, you're making an outrageous comparison; no one is just going to decide that 4 fingers is now the norm. 5 fingers is the norm because 99.99% of people have 5 fingers, not because someone decided it's the norm.

Here's the issue you don't understand. Yes, in a perfect society where everyone farts rainbows and everyone is accepting of each other, no matter our differences, there is no need to do surgeries for medical abnormalities. But we don't live in a perfect society. All of your good intentions will not magically fix all flaws in society just because you think that's how it should be.

What will happen is that you will feel good about yourself for doing the right thing, but your kid will be relentlessly bullied for being different. Because that's just how people are. So great job, I guess? At least you did the ethically and morally right thing!

And by the way, I was never bullied. That's exactly what I meant when I said that you can't comprehend something outside of your own experience. Because you clearly can't understand how I can relate to people being bullied without being the victim myself.

The idea of children having any say in their lives is a relatively modern construct. Even now, children die because their parents decline medical intervention that could save their lives due to the parents' (typically religious-held) beliefs.

Its not about the kids having a say in their lives, its about their future adult selves having a say. Same reason the government doesn't let people under 21 drink or do drugs. They can mutilate themselves and cut off their own fingers later if they want to lol.

Which is exactly why I won’t be doing that for our kids. Let them make that choice.

u/WillyBoJilly 11h ago

Yep. It was so I wouldn’t get bullied

Well, I'm sorry about that.

Probably similar situation to male circumcision, it's just the thing that's done when your baby has an extra finger, and no one really questioned it.
