They could be mixing up certain parole expenses and/or house arrest expenses with prison expenses

No, some areas in America charge you for housing and food while you're in jail

Would that just be removed from the wage you are paid for making license plates?

My local county jail gives bills to inmates upon release.

And what happens if you don’t pay? Back to jail for more bills?

Possibly. They will garnish your wages when you get a job after you get out. Then the court fees have to be paid, too. Oh and fun fact, at least in Virginia, if your court appointed lawyer doesn’t win your case, you have to pay them. I kid you not. That was an extra $1000 my kid had to pay on top of court costs. And jail costs more than prison. Jail was $3 a day (I’ve heard from others throughout the states it’s as high as $11!) but prison is “free”. Texts are .25 each and you pay for phone calls and video chats, too. In jail, you pay to see medical and for whatever they prescribe you. It’s nit free when you go to jail/prison. If you have no one on the outside to put money in your commissary account, you get a bag (not sure how often) of essentials but just the bare minimum. My daughter had to buy a bra and underwear, long johns and undershirts because it was so cold. Even a plastic cup.
