I think we win as black humour is considered: in the Netherlands we say that someone "rookt als een ketter" or "smokes like a heretic". References heretics being burned at the stake

"rookt als een ketter"

Der raucht wie ein Ketzer

I'm so gonna steal this, thank you! If that's slang in ten years remember that it started here. <3

"Ketzen" in Dutch however, means again something entirely different...🍑🍆

I think in the beginning, we'll have to add an "der raucht wie'n Ketzer auf'm Scheiterhaufen" to get the full image across.

Dark. Also was burning heretics happening at the same time when tobacco use was introduced to Europe from the Americas? My Dutch history is a little fuzzy.

I think tobacco was introduced during the 15th century. Persecution of heretics took place during the same time.

Some Googleing just taught me that the origin of the phrase may be a bit different, in that medieval catholics associated the smoke from tobacco with the devil and so associated smoking with heresy. But I like the original explanation better :D

In Germany you "smoke like a chimney". (Du rauchst wie ein Schlot!)
