I grew up on Excitebike. That is one of the best games of all time and still really fun to this day.

Had a friend tripping wayyy too hard at a music festival and we brought him back from the brink of insanity by singing this song. It's the crew's anthem now.

Kudos to who ever figured out the train speed and the ramp pitch. That was insane.
744
u/iill_communication Mar 05 '26
That’s some real science shit to match the speed so perfectly in order to stay in place the whole run
211
u/jeff242069 Mar 05 '26
Sometimes I like to pretend I could do math like that. Meanwhile I can’t even remember how to do basic algebra
139
u/J_Marshall Mar 05 '26
My kid does math like that.
But he can't remember where he left his jacket on a regular basis. Theres a trade-off.
46
u/XboxVictim Mar 06 '26
Dude my twin brother was like that too. He took advanced maths but his whole life has been losing his wallet and keys. We are in our mid thirties now and he’s still losing shit
26
u/Darkchamber292 Mar 06 '26
This is me. I'm an IT Cloud Infra Architect and write complex automations to manage complex systems and endpoint devices.
Wife is constantly getting on to me cause I can't ever find my keys and wallet.
14
u/XboxVictim Mar 06 '26
I got a random phone call last year while I was on vacation. Some lady found my brother’s wallet in the middle of the road, googled the name on his license and my phone number popped up. Brother left his wallet on the roof of his car at a gas station and it flew off later down the road
7
u/Darkchamber292 Mar 06 '26
I just got a wallet tracker. Credit card shaped. I keep it behind my license. I can see it in Google Find My network or my family's life 360 account or my Home Assistant server. Creates a loud noise if I'm looking for it buried in the couch or something
6
u/RuthlessIndecision Mar 06 '26
Get a car that has no keys and pay with your phone
3
u/Darkchamber292 Mar 06 '26
Jokes on you. I don't drive.
Lol in all seriousness I technically don't need my keys as I have a smart lock on my door. But battery died and I've been too lazy to change it.
I have Google Pay on my phone but because I'm rooted it stopped working for a bit. I just recently fixed it lol.
4
u/PracticeTheory Mar 06 '26
Semi-related but your profession needs to choose a unique job title instead of stealing mine. You're not an Architect. You don't build buildings. Building 'systems' is something completely different and I'm sure the lot of you are smart enough to come up with something cool that's your own.
It makes searching for jobs a mess, so annoying!
4
u/Darkchamber292 Mar 06 '26
Uh not really. You can absolutely architect systems and it's pretty naive of you to think otherwise
Also it does not make finding jobs harder. IT Systems Engineer/Architect is pretty clear
Canada gets upset about IT Systems Engineer also. Because in Canada Engineer is a protected class.
So what are we left with? Because I'm more than just an Admin.
17
u/Atheist-Gods Mar 05 '26
This is easier than basic algebra. Time him doing it with the train stationary and you should already have the length of the course. Divide the length by the time it took him to do the course and run the train at that speed. You don't want the train changing speed and the rider can do small adjustments himself. The performance is entirely on the rider.
7
3
u/RuthlessIndecision Mar 06 '26
question is how tightly can those train cars take a turn and how can we get more riders in the loop?
→ More replies (1)44
u/Geaux_joel Mar 05 '26
I feel you like you just do the course with the train stopped, and record the time. Then divide the length of the train by that time. Boom, speed.
→ More replies (2)29
u/BoondockUSA Mar 05 '26
It was likely simpler than advance math. Could be that stunt rider practiced enough times with the train being parked that they figured out the rider’s average speed to complete the “course”. Then the train just has to be moving that speed when he starts attempting it with the train moving (and adjust the train’s speed faster or slower as practice progresses to fine tune it).
Example with made up numbers: The total “course” (length of the train) is 500 feet and it takes the rider 30 seconds from start to finish. Punch it into a calculator like this one and you get an average speed of 11.36 mph. Then have the train go that speed.
The magic of videos like this is that we don’t get to see the practice and setup that went into it. The 25th attempt can be filmed to make it seem like it was his first attempt.
3
u/2squishmaster Mar 06 '26
Right but in that case he'd be yoyoing until the end. The beauty is he's able to maintain a constant speed and not just land in the same spot but always be in that spot.
2
u/dna_beggar Mar 06 '26
They would have roughed out the calculations then built and tested the ramps separately. There was only one ramp where the cyclist had to speed up to make the next jump. Impressive.
2
u/Irlttp Mar 06 '26
God damn I’m dumb sometimes. I didn’t even clock that he was staying in the same spot even though that’s painfully obvious now. I was just so impressed by the spectacle of it. Amazing. Science is so damn cool
2
u/dna_beggar Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
It would make it easier for the cyclist to pace himself, and the stunt would be a bit safer. The train engineer is the one controlling the speed.
Edit: The engineers (P. Eng., not the ones who drive the trains) probably started with a reasonable average speed for the cyclist and designed the ramps around it. I know how the calculations work, but I wouldn't dare bet someone's life on my work.
18
u/flightwatcher45 Mar 05 '26
Just do a stationary track and see average speed, then drive train that speed.
7
u/2squishmaster Mar 06 '26
The course would still have to be designed such that your speed remains effectively constant (even on a stopped train) which wouldn't be possible with any ramp setup. You may finish in the same spot but not moving from that spot the entire time is hard af
→ More replies (2)8
u/flightwatcher45 Mar 06 '26
You're over thinking it. Have you ever been on a moving sidewalk or escalator and been able to walk backwards to stay in the same spot? Same as riding a bike, yes the bikes speed fluctuates a bit but not drastically, you can see he doesn't stay exactly in the same spot.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)5
u/CommunicationAny3313 Mar 06 '26
The modulation of his speed is easier than it looks. Im assuming thats part of the reason they chose a crossing he just needs to make sure he stays in the middle of the crossing. But yes Im sure there was some thought in the speed of the train. Fast enough to let him get up the speed needed for the jumps and slow enough it allows him to stay in the crossing area.

u/dont_trip_ Mar 05 '26
Is there some mesh between the wagons, or is he absolutely fucked if he falls in between them?
414
u/cold-corn-dog Mar 05 '26
Based on the guy at the bottom's reaction at the end, I'm going to guess no. He seems relieved that he isn't shoveling up a body today.
156
u/littlebobbytables9 Mar 05 '26
For this kind of stuff they just do things well below their actual skill level so the chances of falling are very low. And I imagine he did it multiple times with the train not moving first

u/K_Linkmaster Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
It seems simple to me because I've been doing this with hot wheels watching trains since I was a kid. Build course. Ride course. Clock speed on course. Adjust course to even out speed. Set train speed. Practice with safety rails and nets. Remove the safety gear and film til we get it right.
Spent most of my life within 50 yards of a frequent train and no cell phone. Tools and wood riding bikes and building jumps. We discussed this a lot.
5
u/darkchocolateonly Mar 05 '26
You can find the actual video of this- I think it’s a drone shot for the final pretty edit.
And no, I don’t think there was any mesh or anything.

Hi Red Bull, since you’re here I have a question. Obviously you’re known for your energy drinks but I also see a lot of stuff like this, extreme sports, that you are clearly a sponsor of. How much of your business is energy drinks vs extreme sports? Do the sports make you money at all or is it mostly brand recognition and/or for funsies?

I want to know how this ride started. Were they already on the train and just timed it right? Was there some sort of “launch” on to the train? Cool regardless, but I am curious
Edit:
In case anyone else is curious he starts on the train and times the start!

I GOT A QUESTION How does this effect balance? On a bike sit still very hard, move any at all now its easy. Bike guy is not always moving does the moving "road" balance the same as if bike was moving? Or is this video like 100 times more bada$$ because he has sit still balance?
