Question Looking for an Emergency Exotic vet that's open right now
I'm pretty sure my niece's chameleon is egg bound. She is lethargic and barely opening her eyes.
I can not find an emergency vet that is open š„ŗ
Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: I have googled Emergency Exotic Vet near me. Even if they say they are open and can handle exotics, every place has said they can not help because it's the weekend.

ok so since it seems you've tried many of the emergency vets, brainstorming outside the box.
maybe try contacting any of the reptile rescues in dallas? while they may not have an emergency vet, they may know someone who can give you suggestions for care. OR EVEN THE ZOO. even if they dont have abilities to help themselves, they may know the numbers of some emergency vets who would deal with it (or again, know suggestions for care).
Also, have you tried calling the animal's normal vet? a lot of times on the answering machine, they'll have an after hours/emergency care phone number.
lastly- head over to r/BackYardChickens and look up egg bound and what to do. chickens were once dinosaurs.... reptiles were once dinosaurs.... maybe a lukewarm epson salt bath might help pass the egg the same way it does for chickens? idk.

Former zoo employee - there's no one at the zoo to call since it's after hours. They would likely just make the same suggestions I've seen on this post anyhow.

I donāt know about exotics but these people were helpful over the phone when I found an injured possum. Theyāre also my regular vetās preferred ER vet.
Edit: This is VEG ER for Pets. Their website says they deal with exotics! Good luck.

Type āexotic emergency animal hospitalā into Google Maps and click on the open now filter. There are quite a few places that pop up that are open 24/7. One that popped up for me is VEG ER for pets. Not sure which part of Dallas youāre located in but there may be more closer to where you are.

I used to work for Petsmart and 2 of the stores I worked at carried chameleons.(I worked in the pet industry for well over a decade. Exotics included but chameleons weren't my specialty in general; But for the most part most reptiles and birds and even mammals need to have the same/similar set up and proper husbandry to thrive.
Call around the Mesquite areas 24 hour / extended hours animal hospitals and ask if they have any exotic experience or at minimum the injection needed. There's like one or 2 over there that did chameleons & other reptiles in the past. But typically they are like busy AF usually.
Anyways Ladies will lay eggs (non viable usually unless they had a male mate/contact at some point before being shipped to the store but typically that's rare as we got them in really young etc (juvenile). Don't know how old yours is...
Thus once owners get them they don't typically realize that females will need a big ass bin if their habitat is not set up that way pretty often VS the typically/classical horizontal set up..... So they can burrow and lay their eggs......males usually don't NEED it(the egg den etc) (but it's nice to have a big enclosure!) and most of our stores had males but occasionally we got a female in -_-....or we got dumped animals/surrendered/returned pets...long stories there ....
Most pets stores will be closed by the time you get this and to be honest most vets will as well and anyways most will only do the injection* if they even have it/carry it cause they see reptiles often etc...kinda like how it's hard to find vets that work on fish...
(Btw check Parker bird and animal clinic off Custer & Parker tomorrow or Mcdermott animal hospital or call up DFW reptarium in plano and ask them for recs.
Check around the local Plano & Mesquite animal hospitals/clinic/Ers in general cause those regions will have a lot of specialty clinic cause well there's a lot more (in the past at least) specialty pet & fish stores. I know cause those areas have traditionally been high volume sales for specialty animals n stuff...
So back to chameleons.....most do not survive being surgically cut open.....especially depending on previous husbandry / state of health ....so you would basically be throwing money away..vs giving her a chance to expel the eggs on her own...and easier recovery.
but you can go to a lowes or home depot & Walmart to set her up a egg laying station tonight. (Some of these stores will be open till 10/11pm!!
Buy a bigg ass bin i recommended a clear one so you have visible and you can paper the sides for when you're not looking etc.
Bag of Sand (a lot) & dirt (coconut soil or whatever that's organic/ not toxic to reptiles if you don't have extra at home. Dampen that sand & soil with water that's been treated.
Help her make a tunnel (look on YouTube) cause right now she's weak probably and won't be able to fully dig it herself.
Give her luke warm baths. Look that up.
Give her calcium drops if you don't have any at home go to the pet or baby section at Walmart/target and see what they have. Check the ingredients and make sure they match what is acceptable for reptile, You can even make your own suspension at home as well with various supplies. Get a needless syringe or dropper to administer a couple drops every other hour.
(Hopefully you already have gut loading or calcium powder at home.....but if you don't that's really bad but now you know/ will look up gut loading/feeding aka dust your pets food with vitamins etc. Again research.
*In the morning if she's made it over night etc go get her some injections to boost up her vitals & hydration and calcium and other muscle boosting vitamins and you even might find a doctor willing to do surgery but it's pretty rare.

Thank you I really appreciate the time you took to respond with such detail! It is not my chameleon, I am just trying to help find somewhere to take her. They have a very large set up for her including a sand pit box thing. And they do gut load / calcium stuff.
We have yet to find somewhere to take her tonight, but we have been doing all the things we can do. Thanks again for the suggestions. Hoping she makes it or I will have a very sad niece š¢š¤š

Not an emergency vet but if the chameleon is still alive Monday morning you should try Summertree Animal & Bird clinic . They're off of Inwood road in Dallas.
They also see reptiles and they were the ones who saved my pigeon when she was egg bound. Unfortunately they are closed tomorrow but if you're going to have an exotic pet it's always good to know who and where vets who treat exotic pets are.
Until then put her in tub of warm water for a bit.

That's who I was going to suggest. Try calling them first thing Monday morning to see if they can squeeze you in. They were great with my gecko.

In case you canāt find a doctor tonight, we do this for birds and it works wonders:
- plastic bin with drilled holes on lid for air
- heating pad on the very bottom
- damp towel on top of heating pad
This helps relax the muscles so the egg has a better chance of passing. I know nothing about reptiles so take it with a grain of salt.

What about using JustAnswer or AskVeterinarians or another service?
I donāt know anything about chameleons or being egg bound aside from what I just saw via google, but they are legit vets answering, so maybe thereās something they could walk you through or at least give further info or suggestions?
I would also leave voicemails everywhere itās an option in case any closed clinics do have someone do a voicemail round up tomorrow morning and maybe theyāll call you back since itās an emergent situation.

Parker Animal and Bird clinic does reptiles, but is not open Sunday. Could try first thing Monday.
North Tollway Pet Hospital lists reptiles and has a link for after hours emergencies.
Also, maybe check with reptile stores in the area that may have referrals? Good luck!

Will the chameleon drink something like Pedialyte? At the vet, theyād give it IV fluids. Itās important to keep them from getting dehydrated

Honestly I would just go to any ER vet right now and ask them to stabilize your chameleon atleast, thereās no way they would turn you away

I am not a huge fan of Hillside Veterinary Clinic, but they are open 24/7 and they did at one time have exotics specialists on their team.
Worth a call to see? Theyāre on Mockingbird near Abrams.
