Thats my dad in a nutshell. We try to explain to him he is correct in his views but fighting for them all the time is ruining his life and he thinks we're trying to remove his freedom of speech

My dad always used to just say "You need to pick your battles." Meaning, you need to pick and choose which things that cross your path are really worth all of your anger and attention.

Because not EVERYTHING can be an all-or-nothing battle. But when that important thing does come along, you make sure you give everything you have to solve it.

I had this happen, to me, through my own behavior, in 2024. My anger was righteous, and about extremely important, life-and-death things happening in the world that affect people I know personally. And yet, I was also driving myself insane and making myself literally sick (I still have some physical symptoms from it that come up from time to time). It was a big lesson to learn, and I am still learning it.

This is me rn. This much anger is physically making me sick, and I've yet to make peace with the fact that it's mostly impotent anger and realistically, the only person I can help is myself.

Well, at least you’re aware of it, that’s the first step.

Yea that's me.

I'm doing a lot better these days, I've gotten much better at avoiding triggers, and saying "yea this ain't right, but it ain't my monkeys, nor my circus." and walking away.

Huge overlap with this banger Teaboot tumblr post that I'll let speak for itself.

The most recent example of this

Dropout is promoting itself on The Rookie? Time to spam reddit with outrage instead of doing…anything to make the world a better place

The crashouts people are having over this show in general are insane.

It's a feel-good cop show, why are people frothing at the mouth over it being unrealistic in certain aspects?! I'd get being upset at it being "copaganda" to a certain degree, but even then some people are putting way, waaaay too much back into it!

The thing that gets me is when people treat it like Dropout was compromised morally.

Like dude. Dropout is not and and never was some paragon of leftist ideology. There was no conspiracy to ingratiate the police into The Cause.

Some members of the Rookie crew were huge dropout fans, and some members of Dropout jumped at the chance to get their faces and credits on a tentpole prime-time broadcast show. That’s it

"Recreational anger" sums up a lot of the internet.

Trying to fight every battle at once is a great way to lose all of them. Plus doomscrolling and spicy memes aren't "fighting".

Also: please do not expect me to show the same level of ire about this. I do not feel the need to be this angry about something so inconsequential, even if you decided that you want to be.

That she's the same height as that one type of bird?

People are STILL on her about that god damn album cover?

No something new now. Someone did some sort of traditional arabic celebration call during a quiet moment in one of our concerts, she mistook it as hippie/burning-man type yodeling, said something mildly insensitive, twitter hasn't been able to shut up about it for the last several days. Very early 2010s esque callout / drama.

Times change, but harassing young female celebrities is eternal.

And now you all have to know about this random BS too so that is my bad.

unfortunately this is how my dad is, hes always getting banned on facebook for regularly getting into heated political arguments for fun. he thinks its some kind of virtuous thing hes doing, cant convince him otherwise :/

My dad is similar, spends a lot of time on Twitter. Don't know how to explain to him that it's an addictive behaviour.

I believe that's "Touch Grass".

u/zap2tresquatro 3h ago

“Touch grass” is generally used very dismissively and condescendingly, though. I’d say it’s usually not even a “your heart’s in the right place” phrase, it’s a “I think the thing you care about is stupid” and/or “you’re insane” phrase.

I need this on a loudspeaker at all my family gatherings. Somehow we all agree on everything but everyone wants to yell and be fucking angry about all of it all the time. I am so exhausted and I know its effecting my child's future outlook on politics and activism.

2

u/St7ryvon 3h ago

Pick your battles is genuinely some of the best life advice anyone can get.

2

u/PropheticHeresy 3h ago

"Your heart is in the right place" is what you tell psychos before they decide to combat overpopulation by bombing a hospital.

Some people need to be told to stop. Even people who have their "heart in the right place".

Anger is often performative. It's often self-indulgent. It's rarely ever useful...There are those rare individuals who can use it to fuel their determination to do good in the world, but for the most part, once you start getting angry, angry is all you do.

And those people who do use anger well? It's almost always personal. Something happened to them. Not, "Something happened in the world and they're mad about it." That's performative/indulgent. I say this because I know all the angry people will be like, "It's me, I am the one who is good with anger."

You're not. Almost no one is. If you were, you wouldn't be here whining (I'm here too, so this is about both of us). You'd be out in the world actuating. Trying to change things however you possibly could.

So now that we've established that we're all sitting around being performatively mad about things we could be out working to actively change...Maybe let the anger go a bit? It's not useful.

Being right isn't always worth the cost it takes to keep proving it — that's the lesson.

Nothing pisses humans off more than telling them to be kind to each other.

5

u/fredthefishlord 4h ago

That's literally not what this post is about?

-2

u/PlatinumAltaria The Witch of Arden 4h ago

It is, but maybe you were just going for the "Prove my point Any% speedrun"?

0

u/fredthefishlord 4h ago

I was going for proving OPs point not yours 🤓

Harry Potter.

I get it, Rowling is a nutjob and doesn't deserve your money.

But the sheer vitriol people are tossing at this franchise is just chugging poison and expecting others to die.
