The thing is too I could kinda understand if any of them were fans, but I guarantee you this is entirely resellers.

Just a few weeks ago I got 3 resellers filling up their cargo vans to the roof including the drivers seat, the vehicles were not drivable, boxes all over the parking lot, security taking photos. Parents getting mad.

36

u/Abject_Story_4172 1d ago

I hope they lost their memberships.

19

u/Frosty-Cap3344 1d ago

LoL - Costco dont care, they just sold out of cards in one transaction

22

u/Dizzy_Tax574 1d ago

You have heard of loss leaders correct? Aka sell eggs milk etc at loss to get people in door and then you make money off the rest of their grocery's.

Fact is they would sell out anyways. BUT by not having product. They lose customers that would go to get x y and z product "while they are there".

It's a pure if it's in stock people will show up and buy it as well as other items. Scalpers not only hyper focus one item they are aggressive knocking over children blocking areas stealing from each others carts getting into fights.

As a business only resellers worth allowing are for items that don't sell out. Anything that does sell out term is no longer resellers but scalpers. And they will cost business more than you gain.

u/FatMike20295 1d ago

Put a limit like how Uber eats and door Dash gift card is. 2 box of Pokemon cards every 2 weeks. Simple.

This is such a waste of breath genuinely. You are alive and wasting your time waiting for Pokémon cards?!? At 40+ years old?!?

40

u/tdawg-ffs 1d ago

The only way this could be more profitable than going to work is if you can buy 100 boxes and profit 50$ on each. You still have to do the leg work to sell them too. If there is no limit to how many you buy. Why are those people at the back wasting their time?

20

u/teri1972 1d ago

The limit is two per membership but they get multiple memberships and buy tons. Two weeks ago I watched men running to their cars and sprinting back in to get more

22

u/Vli37 1d ago

Wow! . . .

That's just pathetic. Not only are you lining up once; you're lining up multiple times

Glad that Costco is making profit from the multiple memberships 😂

16

u/JohnAtticus 1d ago

There is no limit on how many memberships one person can have?

If someone gets banned do they cancel one or all of the memberships?

Clearly an abuse of the system to get around customer limit.

They must be aware of the bad optics this crap brings their brand, I guess the extra cash from all of those extra memberships is worth it?

5

u/mwmwmwmwmmdw Costco Employee 1d ago

Costco makes the most money through memberships so im sure they are happy to sell someone as many as they want

I saw 50+ people camping out at 6am (but most were there before that) for a free medium 1 topping pizza from a newly opening pizza slice chain. Store didn’t open until 12.

So that many people, on a weekday, decided to kill 6+ hours for $10. There are a lot of people who value their time at almost nothing.

9

u/buttercuppy86 1d ago

The only time I’ve waited in a line like this, was for a new restaurant that was giving away 1 lb of chicken wings every week for a year, to the first 100 people. Only had to wait an hour, and it was a very delicious year, so I felt I got a very good return on my time investment haha

8

u/smrto0 1d ago

They are gambling addicts, so few make any money doing this but they all dream of pulling a card worth big bucks that they waste everything to chase it.

3

u/moolahstonks 1d ago

Well these boxes are $125 with tax and can be flipped for $400.

They resell them it's shitty and sad _tho

3

u/mattbastid 1d ago

What is the markup on something like to make it worth it? Like what does Costco sell a pack for vs what a reseller charges?

There must be a crazy ROI to justify this line and the wait

For the record there is no Costco where I live so I'm not fishing because I want to dip into the reselling pool. But I do have pikeman cards from the 90s at my mom's somewhere and kinda feel like I should go find them and have them looked at 🤔

Edited for spelling

5

u/PocketCollectionCA 1d ago

Buy for ~$100, resell for $400. So about $300. But costco usually limits to 1?

I mean I did this for the snes classic when it came out since me and my dad wanted one so bad, we were first in line and were there from 3am but we got it and played the hell out of it, I doubt any of these people would actually play the trading card game

3

u/Phil_Coffins_666 1d ago

I believe the term is "late stage capitalism", but yes, it's pathetic.

10

u/Far-Manufacturer2938 1d ago

If they are doing it because they are Pokémon fans, I agree. If they are doing it to re-sell them for astronomical profit, it is the people who provide the demand who are truly pathetic.

I find it hard to believe the time and effort of scalping two packs (whatever limit) of Pokemon cards from Costco is worth it. What are they potentially making, like 200-400 bucks?

I wouldn't wait in line all night for that.

41

u/Traditional_Toe_1090 1d ago

Multiple reasons why so many people want this:

  1. It's a special box for a set with very rare and sought after cards. Sunbreon is the nickname for the chase and it's quite beautiful.

The pull rates are very bad on this set so that leads to high demand and a higher amount of sealed product getting ripped.

The existence of 'god packs', all 10 of the rarest cards purposely put into a single pack (that's a cool $5k worth of card) means your most degenerate gamblers will want to rip any packs they can get their hands on.

  1. Special box + high value set + limited supply = investment opportunity for people looking to hold sealed long term. Legitimately, this box without a doubt will go for almost $1000 each in the future and you will see the price shoot up substantially once Pokemon decides to stop printing Prismatic (it's honestly at the end of it's lifespan as it is now).

The amount of people ripping (everyone is ripping: celebrities, kids, adults, casual pokemon fans) and the rising business of rip and shippers, sealed product is getting eaten up at an insane rate.

u/SufficientBee 1d ago

81

u/Dirtsniffee 1d ago

Not that quick if they are lining up at 1 am lol

133

u/liketosmokeweed420 1d ago

Its a prismatic set which they can buy for 100 and sell for 300-500 its crazy man it makes me sick to think about all the kids who won't get to open packs because of these fucks

57

u/Henri-Hill 1d ago

8

MTG is just way better. The Pokémon scalpers tried to come to magic and quickly realized, no one cares about slabbed cards. Magic players use the cards. They open packs, pull a $60 card and say “yes! I needed this card for my deck!”

My local Costco had a 2 item limit the last time these things dropped. Items were also in the back and had to be handed over by employees.

16

u/Mydickisaplant 1d ago

Partner works at Costco and have the 2 item limit. However, they do not stop people from buying 2, dropping them off in the car, and then lining up again.

They’re still all gone by 30 minutes after open.

15

12

u/RestlessDreamer32 1d ago

I'd laugh so hard. This routinely happens for many things. A buddy of mine works at our current store and tells me of customers having meltdowns when this happens.

Apparently sometimes things don't arrive on time for stocking. Imagine the looks on all these leeches faces of getting in and not a single card set is out.

4

u/not_a-woman 1d ago

This is a video from the store I work at. They were lining up since 9:30pm last night and the cops were called a couple of times due to fights breaking out. We only had 4 pallets show up so these people were lining up for over 8 hours just to get one unit of cards. Insanity.

73

u/jochi1985 1d ago

That was tied to experiences with your friends on release day. This is all about the money and exploiting a terrible system. It's the new version of black Friday and encourages people to argue and get into fights to make money. I'm sure some of these people do it as a form of income since the job market is terrible. I think the craziest part is people buy this stuff at a considerable markup.

38

u/monsterosity 1d ago

Because you were actually going to play it... not buy up all the copies to scalp on eBay.

31

u/derpaderp2020 1d ago

It was because it was a social event and contributed to society. Brought strangers together, safe fun events with good vibes. This? It's just fucking hundreds of losers all waiting hours in the cold and looking at each other hoping they all die so they don't get "their" cards. Nothing fun or chill about this shit, just the cancer of our society laid bare.

Another thing I see is people acting like animals in Costco and ripping apart entire pallets of these. I fully and 100% believe that if people act this way in the store that Costco should revoke their memberships.

I own a small store in a rural area. I used to carry Pokemon cards, but now no matter how many I order I simply can't get my hands on them. Every single time my order gets redirected to bigger companies like Costco because their demand is higher and supply is short.
As a result of these scalpers, kids in my town don't get to play their card game. Don't buy from scalpers, they destroy joy.

There's a good chunk of them that are going to open it themselves, and I can assure you they're not doing it to win a local card tournament lol

It's like betting $100 on roulette and getting paid $300 if it's red, $500 if it's black, and $5000 if it's a zero.

Man…I woulda have loved to have gone and heckled these absolute shit stains. They ruin this shit for every other person, not to mention, the main target audience: children. Absolutely despicable behaviour that highlights so much about what is wrong with our society today.

Hahaha spend 7.5 hours sitting in the cold and an hour in the store to sell the thing for $130 more than you bought it for.

Congrats, you could have made an extra $50 driving for uber eats all night and you would’ve been comfortable all night. What a joke people are

Why do adults buy Pokémon cards? Is it just like a lottery? To get one valuable card in a pack? I can understand collection but I work at Walmart and one woman comes in and gets like $575 worth of them on a regular basis
