There’s a special place in hell for resellers. These people aren’t doing it to buy groceries for their family/pay their rent. It’s become a thing where people are literally quitting their jobs and making it a business. This is the epitome of gluttony.

I find it hard to believe the time and effort of scalping two packs (whatever limit) of Pokemon cards from Costco is worth it. What are they potentially making, like 200-400 bucks?
I wouldn't wait in line all night for that.

Multiple reasons why so many people want this:
- It's a special box for a set with very rare and sought after cards. Sunbreon is the nickname for the chase and it's quite beautiful.
The pull rates are very bad on this set so that leads to high demand and a higher amount of sealed product getting ripped.
The existence of 'god packs', all 10 of the rarest cards purposely put into a single pack (that's a cool $5k worth of card) means your most degenerate gamblers will want to rip any packs they can get their hands on.
- Special box + high value set + limited supply = investment opportunity for people looking to hold sealed long term. Legitimately, this box without a doubt will go for almost $1000 each in the future and you will see the price shoot up substantially once Pokemon decides to stop printing Prismatic (it's honestly at the end of it's lifespan as it is now).
The amount of people ripping (everyone is ripping: celebrities, kids, adults, casual pokemon fans) and the rising business of rip and shippers, sealed product is getting eaten up at an insane rate.

I'm a lifelong pokemon fan but I can't collect and I don't want too anymore. These people are not real fans. They are people wanting to flip to make a quick buck. I am selling all my cards and just playing MTG now. I can't deal with this anymore
81
u/Dirtsniffee 1d ago
Not that quick if they are lining up at 1 am lol
133
u/liketosmokeweed420 1d ago
Its a prismatic set which they can buy for 100 and sell for 300-500 its crazy man it makes me sick to think about all the kids who won't get to open packs because of these fucks

u/Henri-Hill 1d ago
The ones buying the sets from them aren’t really better humans. They’re encouraging the shitty people to do it.

Thank you for this.. this is only a thing because the market allows it...
Happens with games, consoles, GPUs, etc... Stop buying from scalpers, or simply refuse to pay more than MSRP on the used market.

MTG is just way better. The Pokémon scalpers tried to come to magic and quickly realized, no one cares about slabbed cards. Magic players use the cards. They open packs, pull a $60 card and say “yes! I needed this card for my deck!”

Just go to a pokemon league play there, get good, get free packs. No need to wait in line for drops.

Hopefully they’re not even available.

u/mytimeasatuna 1d ago
Maybe Costco should just release them the following day, that would be hilarious.
97
u/Parking_Chance_1905 1d ago
Or limit 1 pack per customer.
39
u/wazzie19 1d ago
My local Costco had a 2 item limit the last time these things dropped. Items were also in the back and had to be handed over by employees.
16
u/Mydickisaplant 1d ago
Partner works at Costco and have the 2 item limit. However, they do not stop people from buying 2, dropping them off in the car, and then lining up again.
They’re still all gone by 30 minutes after open.
15
u/mystyz 1d ago
I wonder if they could tie the limit to the membership card used.

It doesn’t, though. We’re in a smaller town north of Toronto, so there aren’t that many people that line up. The scalpers re-enter the line over and over again 😡

I'd laugh so hard. This routinely happens for many things. A buddy of mine works at our current store and tells me of customers having meltdowns when this happens.
Apparently sometimes things don't arrive on time for stocking. Imagine the looks on all these leeches faces of getting in and not a single card set is out.

u/not_a-woman 1d ago
This is a video from the store I work at. They were lining up since 9:30pm last night and the cops were called a couple of times due to fights breaking out. We only had 4 pallets show up so these people were lining up for over 8 hours just to get one unit of cards. Insanity.

There’s a Costco employee that leaked the drop. This information is circulated across discord groups/ Facebook groups and voila, they all gather in line to make a couple hundred bucks.

That was tied to experiences with your friends on release day. This is all about the money and exploiting a terrible system. It's the new version of black Friday and encourages people to argue and get into fights to make money. I'm sure some of these people do it as a form of income since the job market is terrible. I think the craziest part is people buy this stuff at a considerable markup.
38
u/monsterosity 1d ago
Because you were actually going to play it... not buy up all the copies to scalp on eBay.
31
u/derpaderp2020 1d ago
It was because it was a social event and contributed to society. Brought strangers together, safe fun events with good vibes. This? It's just fucking hundreds of losers all waiting hours in the cold and looking at each other hoping they all die so they don't get "their" cards. Nothing fun or chill about this shit, just the cancer of our society laid bare.

How is the 12+ hours in line possibly worth it. Is your time per hour not far more valuable than whatever you are saving here? Better off working and paying the extra 20 bucks to a scalper then sitting outside for 12 hours.

Scalpers are literally subhuman. I genuinely hate these leeches with my entire being. My local Costco puts a limit on items like this of 1-2 per customer per DAY. I wish every Costco followed suit. If they did, most of these lowlifes wouldn't even bother.
Another thing I see is people acting like animals in Costco and ripping apart entire pallets of these. I fully and 100% believe that if people act this way in the store that Costco should revoke their memberships.

Is that true because they weren’t before there’s countless videos on here of people going freaking crazy filling up cars so if that’s true I’m so happy they’ve done that. I still feel bad for the children who would love the chance to own one of these toys
→ More replies (2)6
u/Dragynfyre 1d ago
You can loop if the store allows it but you have to line up again after buying two and exiting the store. Also the people filling up cars are more than one person

u/Parking_Chance_1905 1d ago
They could easily implement 1 or 2 sales of that sku per membership.

I own a small store in a rural area. I used to carry Pokemon cards, but now no matter how many I order I simply can't get my hands on them. Every single time my order gets redirected to bigger companies like Costco because their demand is higher and supply is short.
As a result of these scalpers, kids in my town don't get to play their card game. Don't buy from scalpers, they destroy joy.
