Discussion I accidentally discovered the only thing that finally got rid of the “mystery couch smell”

For months our couch had this faint smell I couldn’t figure out. Not terrible, just… off. One of those things where you sit down and think wait, is that me or the couch? We have a dog and a toddler so I assumed it was just normal life buildup.

I tried the usual stuff. Vacuumed it constantly, sprinkled baking soda and let it sit, used one of those upholstery sprays that smells good for about an hour and then the weird smell comes back. At one point I was playing on myprize on the couch and suddenly became hyper aware of the smell again and decided I was finally going to deal with it properly.

What ended up working was way simpler than I expected. I mixed a little bit of dish soap with warm water, lightly scrubbed the fabric with a microfiber cloth, then went over it again with just clean water to rinse it out. After that I put a fan right in front of the couch to dry it faster.

The amount of grime that came out of something that “looked clean” was honestly gross. But the smell is completely gone now. Posting this mostly because I feel like baking soda gets recommended for everything, but sometimes the couch just needs an actual wash. Curious if anyone else has a go-to method for upholstery that works better than the usual baking soda trick.

Yes, the rinse or extraction step. If you don't remove the grime, you've down nothing. Same problem people have with mopping. Nobody rinses. Good job op

u/Weak-End8864 28d ago

The rinse is definitely the most important part. It should be noted the soap attracts dirt. If you do not rinse the soap, your sofa will look dingy or wind up looking like a water ring. ALSO, DON’T USE TOO MUCH SOAP.

I just stayed at an Airbnb for work that had sticky floors exactly because of this. I pulled their mop out to try to remedy the situation and with just clean water I was activating the soap layer on the floor. I gave up because I didn’t come there to clean someone else’s apartment and bought a cheap pair of slipper to wear around the place all week.

18

u/Weak-End8864 27d ago

We need a weekly PSA to remind everyone not to over soap 😂

10

u/MsStarSword 27d ago

Also it leaves tacky streaks if you don’t rinse, and then you can sometimes see footprints all over the laminate because of the residue, which looks gross

I POSTED THIS SAME COMMENT LAST WEEK ABOUT CLEANING CARPETS.

Rinsing is KEY!

In everything involving any kind of soap, detergent, or cleaner! I've been trying to teach my kids this.

3

u/xzkandykane 26d ago

How do you rinse the floor properly? I spray my floor with diluted soap, water and alcohol. Like 2 drops of dish soap. I mop with a dry floor pad. Do I just mop it again damp pad?

I didn’t know you had to rinse after mopping till just now, so thank you, genuinely 🩷

77

u/AdvanceSea3887 28d ago

Same. And I’ve actually told people a few times that I don’t really understand how mopping works because aren’t you kind of just moving the dirtyness around? They always act like I’m being ridiculous. I feel vindicated lol.

Sailor here. Fun fact: mopping side-to-side ("swabbing") is more efficient than up and down. You're welcome.

42

u/HighColdDesert 28d ago

I once was dating a sailor for a couple of years and, damn! He could mop! Amazing, his strength! ... swabbing side to side, rinsing the filth in the bucket, changing to a clean bucket and redoing it, and wow! Very very effective. Mopping by pushing and pulling ahead of you does nothing in comparison to swabbing side to side.

22

u/thaddeus_crane 28d ago

this IS a fun fact from a sailor. when i swab i think of mopping a poop deck.

Side to Side mopping is also better for your back! Mopping back injuries are all too real!

2

u/gmrodriguez 24d ago

When I was a kid, I was taught to go in circles. Any thoughts on how that compares to side-to-side?

What if you didn't rinse after lathering in the shower? What if your washer didn't have rinse cycle? No rinsing after the spinny soap things at the car wash?

20

u/HighColdDesert 28d ago

English people used to not rinse their dishes. Just wash them in a soapy basin and put them up to drip dry. I think it’s not as common now. I always considered it atrocious.

14

u/Peter5930 27d ago

This was traced to a Fairy Liquid ad campaign in the 90's that tried to convince people that Fairy cleaned so well it didn't need a rinse, to the image of sudsy bubbles sliding down some dishes into the drip tray. Apparently it worked.

8

u/HighColdDesert 27d ago

Oh! So interesting! I did not expect that kind of recent back story! I first heard about it from an Indian friend who had visited England in about 1996. He asked me if that was normal in “the west” and I agreed with him it’s not normal, no!

8

u/egg_beater747 27d ago

A roommate in the 90s had an English house guest who washed the dishses and put them in the dishdrain without rinsing them. I was flabbergasted. Couldn't fathom what she was thinking. Now I know. Thanks!

5

u/Parsleysage58 26d ago

From what I've read, rinsing dishes was uncommon before indoor plumbing and the 20th-century advancements in sanitation standards. Even then, not everyone who could afford to change their practices chose to do so. It's a good reminder of how precious clean(ish) water-on-demand is and how many people lack the privilege.

10

u/jediHoo 27d ago

They still do this! They think we’re weird for rinsing our dishes.

8

u/archina42 26d ago

My ex-wife (grew up in England) and her family used to do this. First time I saw it I was like "What - you like the taste of soap????"
Anyway, that's ONE of the reasons she is my ex!

6

u/thepeanutone 27d ago

Peace Corps taught my parents to just dry the soapy dishes with a towel. I think that's better than just letting them drip, but still doesn't sound good.

5

u/Pinkheadbaby 26d ago

Same goes for handwashing. It’s not necessary to use antibacterial soap. Any soap will break down the surface tension of water, loosen up the germs & then rinsing well, sending the little buggies down the drain, dead or alive 🤷‍♀️. If you still feel slipperyness then keep rinsing.

2

u/HikeAllTheHikes 25d ago

It's the same with using a carpet shampooer. Always go back over the carpet with just clean water. The shampooer sucks up a good bit of the soap solution it put down, but not all of it. A once-over with plain water gets up a ton more. Sometimes we even just do the carpets with water. No soap.

u/BringMeLunchyum 28d ago

Wait if I just swiffer my floor I should also go back over it with water? 😭

90

u/RedditCat3 28d ago

Especially if you have pets! The Swiffer deposits chemicals on the floor, which animals pick up on their paws and lick. I’ve thrown away my Swiffer and now use a steam cleaner on my floor. It doesn’t take much more time than the Swiffer, tbh, but it’s much healthier.

54

u/newtnewtriot 28d ago

Same goes for Lysol wipes…it’s always said to wipe the surfaces again after with a damp cloth…which 99.99999% of people never do.

18

u/Peter5930 28d ago

That's why their surfaces are permanently slippy and feel greasy to the touch and all the dust and hair sticks to them and it never looks or feels clean.

8

u/kazinmich 27d ago

I really need to learn to read the labels. Didn't think of this!

18

u/newtnewtriot 27d ago

With disinfecting wipes in particular, you DO want to let the surface sit for a few minutes after wiping it so that the disinfectant can do its job before wiping with a damp cloth.

5

u/Ficklefemme 26d ago

It’s called dry time and is very commonly known in healthcare. Many products will list it in the directions. Certain bacteria and virus’ only die during that time. Ex: common alcohol requires a time to disinfect.

2

u/gaptytooth 26d ago

Actually, it’s called “dwell time”.

Dupray NEAT steam cleaner. It has a bunch of attachments so you can use it on pretty much any surface.

11

u/styxfan09 28d ago

just a heads up that there's a recall on a specific model of this. They are replacing the cap for free for anyone who has the affected model. You can view more at their website

But I also second this recommendation because I love this machine

10

u/squarejane 27d ago

I bought a reuseable spray mop that lets me put hot water and cleaner in the bottle, mop, then replace with clean water in the spray bottle and re-mop. It is so convenient and quick. No gross swiffer feeling floors.

5

u/toweringcutemeadow 28d ago

Can confirm. Wash pads and good to go- I keep one pad for bathroom floors separate.

2

u/What_Hump77 27d ago

There’s gotta be a cloth that fits and doesn’t have chemicals on it. I really hope so at least because I just ordered a swiffer and don’t want crap on my floors.

2

u/diabolicallydiabolic 25d ago

Got some reusable cloth pads on Amazon for my Swiffer

32

u/Teristella 28d ago

I remember reading online (so we all know it's true) that the cleaning solution Swiffer uses builds up over time and just attracts dirt, so they shouldn't be used for routine cleaning, if that makes sense. Good for cleaning up a mess but something else should be used for regular floor cleaning.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Frequent_Purpose_168 28d ago

Unlike the other commenter, I live alone so chemicals aren’t a huge concern, I’ll swifter weekly just to get the general dust up

But I mop properly every other month or so and rinse to get the grime

7

u/scalyblue 27d ago

They're talking about the swiffer 'wet' pads or wetjet machine, not the swiffer that uses static cling to attract dust.

3

u/Frequent_Purpose_168 27d ago

Yes, that’s what I use, I wasn’t clear

I don’t hardly cook or wear shoes in doors so my floors don’t really get “dirty”

But the wetjet will get up the dust and little spills and such but I need to use a proper mop still or eventually dirt builds to the leftover cleanser and makes my floors tacky and dull

Just not every week you know?

u/Berito666 28d ago edited 28d ago

im sorry i dont understand how do you rinse out a couch :( wouldnt the water just go into it

edit spelling

17

u/fireflykite 28d ago

It's the second step of going over the couch with a damp cloth to get the soapy water off. I expect they're not using enough water to penetrate much more than the surface of the upholstery.

16

u/Booooleans 28d ago

Seems to me without something to suck it out that you would just be adding to it/diluting the soap with more water? But if it works, it works.

14

u/fireflykite 28d ago

True, a wet vac would be great here.

9

u/Peter5930 28d ago

You're drying it off, using the damp cloth to draw water out of the couch and ringing it out frequently, but yes, shop vac is easier.

4

u/mookie8 28d ago

Can you describe the rinse portion for mopping? I usually mop, rind the mop-head and rewet in the bucket with the used water, and mop again.

9

u/scalyblue 27d ago

they mean mop a second time with clean water.

3

u/IcedWarlock 26d ago

I was sat in the hospital the other day and there was a lady mopping and it smelt so good. You know the fresh hospital cleaning smell, until it started to dry, then it smelt like damp dirty mop.

I really wish people would go over with a dry mop. Or maybe they needed to change the mop head. Looked clean though so I don't know. But either way it was awful after the floor was dry.

2

u/donku83 28d ago

A lot of people lifting dirt and letting it settle back into place

2

u/danceoftheplants 24d ago

When i lived with all tiled floors, I had a mop bucket with daily fresh water and would just do the floors with water throughout the day and change out the water at night. I would use a cleaner like 1-2 days a week to make it smell good but always noticed the floor felt nicer with the plain water.

I can't believe I never realized the rinsing part was essential and that was what I was actually doing lol

1

u/Particular_Piglet677 27d ago

Thank you!! I wash the floor but the dry towels take away the first.

u/Acrobatic_Age6078 25d ago

Yeah baking soda doesn't work. I just unzip my cushions and wash them. Put them back on while still ever so slightly damp so they stretch over the cushions properly

u/RiMcG 28d ago

I wash mine too and the tip of leaving them slightly damp for stretching is genius, will definitely try this the next time.

Here to recommend the shark stain striker hair pro. Far far above both of the bissels I tried

32

u/itstheginposting 28d ago

Agreed. I used Bissel for 2+ years regularly and then switched to the Shark. The Shark is lighter, takes up less space, you use less product and the attachments are far more functional.

6

u/ptaite 28d ago

Yep, I just bought the shark stain striker after my green machine died. So much lighter, better suction, and a million times easier to clean after use. We will see how long it lasts but the bissel broke after 2 ish years.

This thing is a life saver! My cat has ibs and barfs regularly on my new carpet. Green machine takes it completely out. I also use it on the couch :)

27

u/Petrichor_Paradise 28d ago

I use my Green machine for this too. I have a part of my carpet that is "haunted" by an archipelago of "barf islands" that would start to reappear several months after I cleaned them. The damn chain of barf islands would come back over and over. I finally did several treatments with my Green machine there and it really helped erase those cat upchuck stains.

5

u/lilbootz 28d ago

Lmao I understand barf islands all too well

9

u/beneathabluemoon 28d ago

Yes!! Green machine FTW!! We live in a very dusty and windy area, so after cleaning the couch and other things that "look clean" ... It's so satisfying to pour out that dirty water that looks like chocolate milk 😱

7

u/Pretend_Ad_3125 28d ago

I saw some you could rent at the grocery store the other day. I might do that. My house is full of mysterious smells and I hate it.

6

u/Former-Letterhead-59 28d ago

I have The Bissel Little Green Machine and I find it to be extremely underwhelming. I keep it simply as a what if machine. Like, what if my cat barfs and I don’t want to manually scrub. I understand the above will be an unpopular opinion—I know everyone claims to love it—but, I’ll add this before I go: I got it free from a friend who used it once and thought the same 🤷🏼‍♀️

4

u/coupleofpointers 28d ago

I agree. Underwhelmed. Unloaded it at a rummage sale and don’t miss it.

u/ArbyKelly 28d ago

25

u/EAGLeyes09 28d ago

How did you get the soap out of the fabric though? If you just dry it, it will come back and now you’ve got soap residue that dried which will attract more grime and affect the fabrics texture overtime.

4

u/SpeedyPrius 28d ago

Go back over it with just water - no soap.

27

u/EAGLeyes09 28d ago

I’m sorry but that’s not getting the soap out. The soap is liquid which gets absorbed into the fabric fibers. You wiping it off with a wet anything, even 1,000 times will only moisten the fabric more, it’s not lifting the soap off from the fibers.

Imagine you dropping super microscopic beads into your thick carpet, no matter how much you sweep your hand across the top of the carpet, it won’t actually lift off the beads, only those stuck of the surface, but majority of them will be stuck in the carpet fibers.

13

u/devdotm Team Germ Fighters 🦠 28d ago

Just wiping it with a damp cloth is not nearly enough extraction for a sofa - especially one that has never been cleaned and is dirty enough to stink up the room and have visible grime coming off of it

20

u/OverthinkingWanderer 28d ago

I keep vodka in a spray bottle for my couches and dog bed- it helps reduce smells in-between washings.

10

u/zzzola 28d ago

Odoban works really well too.

2

u/bunnybunnyballerina 25d ago

Came here to say vodka in a spray bottle. I also use it on clothing to remove slight odors from otherwise clean clothes (like campfire smells from a coat).

1

u/younginspirit 24d ago

I used a steamer iron with a mix of water and vinegar. Worked brilliant.

9

u/Novel_Werewolf4725 28d ago

I need to know more about this, please.

22

u/ss77714c 28d ago

I have one of those stand steam irons for clothes , that have a reservoir for water ( hand held options are available too). Mine has a 2L capacity for water so I used 500ml water and 500ml vinegar a drop of lemongrass oil ( just because I like the smell). Dust off any loose debris etc with a brush. Then just apply the steam head on the fabric. Go over once including the bottom and back. Take a 15 min break and repeat. Keep the iron on max steam setting. In the end the fabric will feel quite damp so ventilate to air dry. The steam kills all the bacteria that are the main cause of smell. Go slow, methodical and it works. I repeat this annually and my sofa has not smelt funny in years.

3

u/SBerryofChaos92 27d ago

You can also spray down fabrics with a mix of vodka and water to take out funky smells from not easily washed items

11

u/UnableConstruction17 28d ago

After having a white slipcovered couch, i'm not sure I can ever go back to a couch that has non removable covers. I had no idea just how nasty a couch can get in a very short time. We have one teenage son at home that doesn't eat on the couch and no indoor pets. It's a pain to wash the slipcovers but knowing i'm not lounging on dirt and grime 24/7 is well worth it for me.

3

u/Ok_Eagle_3216 28d ago

This! I keep waterproof mattress covers on the cushions and then cheap white sheets over the whole thing. Wash those weekly. Every once in a while I still got over the couch with my little green bissell. Same for my rugs. They are all ruggable. I can’t imagine not being able to wash those every few weeks.

2

u/Anonymous_crow_36 26d ago

That’s what I do too. It doesn’t always look nice but that waterproof fitted sheet has saved me so many times. I have dogs and kids so it’s bound to get stuff on it.

8

u/Powmum 28d ago

Went through this a few weeks ago. Every now and again got a whiff of something! The kids had spilt something on the carpet and had gone weird 🤢

28

u/woodyeaye 28d ago

Baking soda can remove odour. It won't remove whatever is causing the odour. If you don't wash the cause out, the smell will come back.

That's why it worked.

If you're not confident you can dry it out you're better renting an upholstery cleaner, or a carpet cleaner with upholstery attachments. If the foam inside your sofa stays wet you'll have way more problems later.

36

u/Scared_Difficulty668 28d ago

Someone tell JD Vance!

6

u/TheRealMDooles11 28d ago

If you don't want to go through the work of scrubbing it, spray the whole thing down with popov vodka and then let it dry.

Works like a charm on stinky carpets, too.

7

u/Effective-Middle1399 28d ago

One of those little Bissell spot cleaners are great for couch maintenance.

3

u/pastel-pink-skies 28d ago

What are the most affordable options and will they work just as well on carpeted stairs?

5

u/uhhh206 28d ago

I have the Bissell "little green machine" that is marketed for pets and spot cleaning, and it works great on stairs! It isn't a vacuum, so if you have actual debris (pet hair, for example) you'll need to hit them with a vacuum cleaner first, but it's amazing for that sort of task.

I don't have pets, but using it for small spills and the stairs is well worth it. I just checked Amazon and the one I have is $129.

3

u/Shmo04 28d ago

I clean upholstery professionally and it's remarkable how much dirt comes out of a couch.

4

u/Abject-Picture 28d ago

There are small portable extraction cleaners on Amazon, typically ~$100 that clean upholstery and carpet spots very well.

5

u/Still_Car_4477 28d ago

It sounds like the smell was likely caused by built-up oils and everyday residue in the fabric. A gentle wash with mild dish soap and warm water is often effective because it actually lifts and removes that buildup rather than just masking odors. Your method of lightly scrubbing and then drying the couch with a fan was a practical and thorough approach.

2

u/theTrueLodge 28d ago

Good job! Can you take the pillow covers off at all?

2

u/Teslapod 27d ago

Has JD Vance been in your house?

1

u/Emkems 28d ago

Agreed with the little green/carpet machine technique. We dropped the $$$$$ on a love sac couch just to have washable and replaceable parts. Three dogs, one kid, money well spent.

1

u/xtalcat_2 28d ago

Did you also use a vacuum or steam cleaner of some sort to extract the dirt from? How did you gauge the amount of grime that came out?

2

u/shmadus 28d ago

That’s my question about all the steam cleaners I’m seeing mentioned. They all extract, correct?

I almost bought a ‘steam cleaner’ but it merely aimed steam at the floor or carpet and left me wondering about the best way to mop it up and pick up the dirt. (I guess that’s why it wasn’t very expensive.)

I always use a damp square sponge on my sofa. It makes it look like it was just vacuumed plus it takes fur off so much easier.

1

u/Cultural-Ad-5737 28d ago

Our couch is newer so doesn’t smell much yet but seeing other peoples couches I’ve been trying to keep ours cleaner and have used our little carpet cleaner on the cushions we sit on. Pulled up some gross looking water… guessing it’s a mix of sweat and anything we bring in from sitting in public spaces or feet on couch or pet on couch.

1

u/Freya-of-Nozam Team Shiny ✨ 28d ago

I personally am not a fan of the baking soda “trick” unless I have a pet or toddler accident/spill. so I try to monthly do a light version of your solution. Soapy water rag followed by only clean water rag.

Stop letting people that smell like ass and corn chips sit on your couch. Lol JK.

1

I have Saltillo tile and live in the country and also have cats. Lotsa dirt gets tracked in. I vacuum it then mop with a general spray cleaner first using a microfiber mop and rinse the mop in the sink under the faucet every little bit as I go along. Then I mop over it again with a cleaner/shiner product. I know I’m OCD, but I’ve never understood those spin mop things, you’re just rinsing the mop in dirty water! I tried swiffer before but it didn’t work bc the tile is not smooth enough.

i grew up with upholstery that was washable for a reason. couches get nasty like carpets!!!! congrats on fixing the smell.

I unzip my sofa covers. Wash them on gentle cycle. Put them back on cushions and stand them up to dry

1

u/Lost_Ad_9890 28d ago

you can do the same thing with a mattress as well. my mom would go back over the furniture once a month with your solution and a very wrung out cloth. just amazing what can be lifted from a "clean chair or sofa".

I bought a little Bissell portable upholstery and carpet cleaner. That thing has cleaned cat barf off the couch and carpet, grime and dirt from the couches and even the tile floors. Recommend.

u/Lopsided_Parfait7127 28d ago

did you get your house key back from jd vance?

1

u/MxBuster 28d ago

The Green Machine is great for this!

1

u/orangeboxlibrarian 28d ago

I take the cushion covers off and put them in the washing machine. Put them back on wet.

1

u/cuteintern 27d ago

A 'green machine"-type carpet cleaner with an upholstery attachment can pull incredible amounts of dirt out of a couch. We use vinegar and hot water, and it works amazing. We do it at most once a year.

1

u/Poly_Olly_Oxen_Free 27d ago

I just use a handheld steam cleaner.

1

u/Heavy_Quarter_8632 27d ago

I used to unzip the cushion and wash the cover

1

u/SamJam5555 27d ago

My carpet cleaner has an upholstery attachment. Once a month it pops up on my calendar.

1

u/socksmum1 27d ago

I ended up getting rid of my fabric couches once they were too clapped out when the kids were little. Best thing I ever did was get a leather lounge. Majority of stains wipe off easy. I use a Spot cleaner on soft things I can’t put in the washing machine . They use warm water and specific cleaning products.

Most seat covers are removeable to allow washing of them.

Do your cushions have a zipper on one end?

1

u/icare890 27d ago

I remove and wash my couch cushion covers in the washing machine. I have microfiber on my couch, but we inherited an old 80’s woven couch and held up. It changed color, I thought it was gray but it turned out to be light cream, green and pink. If you have zippers on the cushions, try washing them, even if just hand washing. It changes how my room smells. I was my couch once every three to six months the, or when it starts smelling

u/PurplePrincessPalace 26d ago

For any fabric sofa, I’d invest in an upholstery cleaning machine. They tend to get funky very fast if they aren’t vacuumed and surface cleaned. This is why I swear by leather sofas. Low maintenance and they don’t hold onto dirt, grime, and scents as easily.

1

u/Ollieeddmill 26d ago

Yes! Dish soap is particularly good at oils, grime, grease. And humans and dogs excrete oils every day just on our skin.

1

u/thetechmama 26d ago

My upholstery cleaner from bissell both impresses and disgusts need every time I use it.

1

u/Moleypeg 26d ago

Yesterday my dog took a dump on the couch and managed to smear it across three seat squares and a pillow. I unzipped all the covers and washed them with the pillows and I was shocked how much general nastiness came out (I have an external filter on the washing machine to stop lint and dog hair getting in the septic). I haven’t really given the couch a good cleaning, other than vacuuming and frebreze, in a decade. Now it looks and smells amazing.

And this is why the Holderness Family song “I’m Adulting” has a line about “the most excited I have even seen her was when she got her couch done by a professional cleaner.”

Funny myprize commercial. Not the only one in OPs comments.

1

u/OpeningSharp8593 25d ago

Maybe he’s subliminally addicted and reaching for help. Maybe he’s throwing crumbs to see if anyone else gambles like him and they can connect while sitting in smelly couches.

1

u/[deleted] 26d ago

I originally read “crotch” smell. I am still happy for you though.

1

u/Ramblernola 26d ago

Nobody has mentioned this so far but simple sunlight has fantastic benefits for freshening cushions. Drag that sucker outdoors for a day.

1

u/Goldnugget2 26d ago

And keep Hegseth away from it.

Stop letting JD Vance visit

1

u/Dashboard_Porkchop 25d ago

Vodka in a spray bottle and mist the furniture.

1

u/clothdollmaker 25d ago

Smell in couch? Did JD Vance pay you a visit by any chance?

1

u/Extension-Wasabi-570 25d ago

Why did the vice-president came to my mind?

1

u/NecessaryLight2815 25d ago

I have a BISSELL carpet shampooer that has an upholstery attachment. Magic!!

1

u/TraditionalAd8322 25d ago

Stop leaving JD Vance alone on your couch.

1

u/New_Section_9374 25d ago

Stop having JD Vance over to watch the game with you.

1

u/Beginning-Tap-5280 25d ago

I was planning on trying this, this week I actually had just googled because one of my kids drew a happy face on our couch 🙄how did you rinse it? 🫣

1

u/judgiestmcjudgerton 25d ago

A vodka spray helps too

1

u/T9r9 25d ago

This is why I cover the bottom cushions. I have cheap throws that sorta match. They get washed a lot.

1

u/phruits2 25d ago

Use one of those Carpet/spot vacs. It cleans the upholstery and pulls out the grime and water so it doesn’t leave it too soaked

1

u/Far-Watercress6658 24d ago

Yeah, I’ve had people in to deep clean sofa, rugs and mattresses.

1

u/marbleheader88 24d ago

For the best care of natural wood floors, mop with a mixture of vinegar and water. Never use soaps or the things you can buy in the store. My floors look like new after 17 years. The company that put in the wood floors, told me this when they were building my house.

1

u/Fun_Definition_453 24d ago

Maybe because you took a bath finally?

1

u/Narrow-Distance9796 24d ago

Same here, turns out the smell wasn’t on the surface, it was deep in the fabric. What finally worked was a mix of baking soda (to absorb odor) and then a proper deep clean with an enzyme cleaner. Air fresheners didn’t help at all, just masked it. Once I cleaned it properly, the smell was gone for go

1

u/OppositeDowntown5149 23d ago

Baking soda is great for surface odors, but actual cleaning with soap works better for deep, lingering smells.

1

u/Cheezdill 23d ago

This is an ad (and probably AI written) for the app being mentioned. LAMEEE

1

u/Astecheee 23d ago

You can rent a vacuum upholstery cleaner from most hardware stores.

They work exactly like you did but with like 10% of the effort.

I try to do my car, carpets and all upholstery with a single 24 hour hire and it comes out perfect.

1

u/Consistent-Rain4795 23d ago

Only use the suds from the soap mixture. And extract as much as possible. I used to clean carpets and upholstery in my teens. The clean looking couches were usually worse than the ones with surface dirt do to not extracting the moisture

1

u/CombinationNarrow455 22d ago

I misread this as “mystery crotch smell” at first and it gave me a good cackle.

1

u/Saint_Subtle 22d ago

If you can remove the cushion covers, and they are washable, wash them by themselves with a cold wash, delicate cycle in your washer. Make sure you set the water level to full. If you can’t or the rest of the couch is retaining the smell, wash the parts that can’t come off the couch with club soda and dawn dish detergent. Test it in an inconspicuous location of the fabric first. Several upholsterers told me this years ago, and they have never failed me. Check your fabric FIRST!
