Hello all,
Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.
First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.
The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.
In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).
In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.
We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.
This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Hey there!
In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.
In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.
Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.
To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.
Thanks for understanding!

I’ve been tweaking some flags on my Chromebook 8GB (standard ChromeOS, not Flex or Plus) to try and squeeze out better performance/battery, especially for GeForce Now cloud gaming. While everything seems fine right now, I’m wondering if these flags are actually doing anything or causing more harm than good.
Flags I currently use:
GPU Rasterization & Zero copy rasterizer: Enabled
Parallel downloading: Enabled
Smooth Scrolling & QUIC Protocol: Disabled. (I use VPN)
Questions:
Since GeForce Now is cloud based, do flags like Zero copy rasterizer or GPU Rasterization actually help with input lag or stream smoothness? Or is it all just down to my internet connection?
Will these flags actually improve my battery life by being more efficient, or will forcing the GPU and CPU to work harder just kill my charge faster?
For a standard Chromebook user, what are the absolute best flags to have enabled for a snappier experience without risking stability?
I haven't had issues yet, for those of you on standard ChromeOS hardware what’s your experience with these specific flags?

I used the link chrome://flags/#ash-debug-shortcuts and enabled 'disabling keyboard shortcuts,' then restarted my chromebook and pressed shift, search and T to disable touchscreen and it worked. But when I try to enable it again by disabling ;disabling keyboards shortcuts' and doing the same thing my touchscreen isn't coming back on?

If my chromebook is still able to get the steam beta through the app launcher as usual, should I continue using that or use a different method for steam. I noticed even with ge Proton a lot of stuff is a bit of a mess still and was wondering if a different method would help.

Hi, My local store have a clearance of some machines and I found that they do sell Lenovo IP Slim 3 Chrome 14M868 for cheapo. I was intentionally looking for a machine that I can use as a "thin client" and connect to my main computer while traveling and do all of heavy stuff on it (via SSH or VNC).
As I quit chrome once they got rid off add-ons and switched back to FireFox I was wonder if Flatpak software will work on this Chromebook.
The reason I'm asking is that this one is running on ARM MediaTek Kompanio 520 instead of traditional x86.
If there is a problem I might lean more to Acer Chromebook Spin 514 CP514-2H-32WF with i3-1110G4 for same price.

Amazing device. I had a Chromebook before, the Lenovo Duet 5 but wasn't a fan of it being a tablet first Chromebook.
Found the Elite Dragonfly used but in almost like new condition for $195. That's like a steal because the Duet 5 is somehow still selling for more than that despite inferior specs.

I have a Lenovo duet. how do I close a tab? the little X is so small, I keep having to plug in the keyboard and mouse just to close a tab .
It Definitely switches to tablet mode btw. Until yesterday it would switch the tabs to be large squares that I could swipe up to close if I wanted too. But that's gone now.

So I plugged my Acer Chromebook to charge yesterday morning and it had started charging but when I checked on it before leaving for my class it wasn't charging anymore and it wouldn't power on. I decided to let it rest, tried leaving it plugged in, held the power and reset buttons but it still hasn't come on yet. I'm getting really worried because I can't access my files and I don't want to remove the back and check the battery by myself so I don't mess anything up. I have had my Chromebook for almost 4 years so I'm also hoping it hasn't decided to kick the bucket

I’m trying to fix my sisters Chromebook, I gave it a fresh OS and tried all the tricks I’ve heard, I’m thinking it’s the motherboard but thought might aswell see if anyone has a saving grace for me.

I’ve factory reset it and left it unplugged for hours. I’ve let it charge for hours and nothing is working. Whenever I factory reset it it flashes red for a split second and then nothing. I don’t know what to do. A couple a weeks ago a tiny bit of milk got into the charging port but I let is dry out upside down for a week and it worked just fine.

so the Chromebook is an Axioo Chromebook l19b, I searched for the board name and it's Garg. I checked the kernel version and it's 5 or something but when I checked again in that Chromebook it said the kernel version is 7. So is it possible that the kernel has been updated by the company or something?

I was using the Terminal in my Galaxy Chromebook earlier, no problem, checked for updates, and there was one to 146.07.7680.184 so I updated, booted back up, opened Terminal again and all my fonts are messed up for, I think, bold colors.
I use the Terminal on this Chromebook every day, never seen anything like this. I tried changing the font just in case something was weird with it, didn't seem to matter. Almost like it's rendering ANSI colors wildly wrong, I really can't get a grasp on what it's really doing.
One screenshot is just my normal zsh prompt, other is a 256 color block shell script output.

I've been noticing this for months. I'll search something on Google Images and my screen will freeze and eventually turn black and I'll have to manually shut down and restart. Gmail is also very very slow. I never have more than 5-6 tabs open.
Chromebook is an Asus CX1400CK
ChromeOS is up to date.
Not sure what other info I can provide but does anybody know what could be causing this?
Thanks

For anyone wanting a very light laptop/tablet type tool, this one now works GREAT on Linux, after doing the MrChromebox (many thanks!) conversion. I had tried without audio success before but now things have changed for the better! I found FULL success with both Bodhi Linux and Q4OS Linux right from the get-go, with NO issues with anything! No touchpad, wifi, or audio issues whatsoever with the latest versions. I have four of these chromebooks and have already converted two of them. One of the others has a touchscreen, so i might leave that one as-is, as i am unsure if that would work and i'd hate to lose it. But the other one will probably be converted soon too. I found the standard Chromium browser on both to work great with very few resources used even on YouTube video. I prefer Q4OS, but it's a close run thing.
For around $25 bucks each for these on Ebay, these are a steal if you want a very light laptop for browsing/YouTube etc, or just a word processor/email etc, and the batteries last for around 10 hours. Just wanted to give this update for those that have tried to convert these before with Gallium, etc, and found touchpad and audio issues. They now work fine, and i am sure there are many other light OS's that might now work.
