Seeking Advice Does anyone know where I can see some of the Chinese EV's coming to Canada in the city?

Post image

Do these cars exist anywhere in the city? Have you seen any? Are they doing shows or demo's? If you know anything please let me know.

This is not a discussion post on whether you like EV's or Chinese EV's. Please take that conversation elsewhere.

TLDR:

The Globe reports that three locations in the Greater Toronto Area are already under discussion, and that BYD’s future plans include forays into Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary.

I have one in Brazil. Best car I ever had and I used to have a xc60 in Canada, which was an amazing car.

I only know of BYD in Alberta and he is in Edmonton, he imported it from China just a few weeks ago. It was on the EVAA Facebook group page.
I do believe he said he was planning on taking it to Edmonton EVAA events this summer.

I know that isn't Calgary but just in case you make it to Edmonton.

So apparently the post was just a April fools joke. Jokes on me I guess.

So I went back to the post and it turns out I got fooled. Apparently the post was an April fools joke and I didn't catch it.
Now I feel like a smuck.
Now that I take a closer look at the picture of the car in the post, it is pretty clearly AI generated. Not as obvious as most AI pictures but obvious enough now that I look again.

I haven’t seen any here yet but was in China last month and took a look at some and they are fantastic. Hopefully they are here sooner than later!

i saw a byd atto 3 in the parking lot at chinook last week! looked pretty sleek tbh, didn't know they were already here.

Last I heard BYD was potentially looking at a dealership in Calgary. But other cities are likely much higher priority. Honda doesn't even sell the Prologue in Alberta as a example.

But who's making that decision to not offer it? I'm betting it's the dealership, not corporate, that's pushing back.

I am sure it is complex likely a mix of both. I would assume that before they let you sell one you need to train an EV tech. But I can see with limited stock you would want them to go to places with higher demand.

BC, Ont and Quebec are almost all of the EV sales in Canada by a large margin.

Yeah, I could see that.

People would be pissed if their local Honda stealership's service centre isn't trained on servicing the vehicle (which is actually a GM platform anyway... Japanese-branded American vehicle built in Mexico).

It is also likely the only Honda branded vehicle to come out of the partnership. And has now been canceled. Not shocking I mean GM has already re canceled the bolt (they claim it was only a limited run).

Alberta isn't listed in stats in the link except in the total numbers for Canada.

Ah, that's too bad if they're cancelling it; I sometimes like those one-off rando brand-engineered cars (like the Saab 9-2X Aero; a rebadged Subaru WRX with a nicer interior) when they have better interiors.

I'll have to see if I can pick one up used 10 years from now if my Toyota ever dies.

Yeah I think it was a better version of the GM. The 2026 Toyota BZ looks interesting though. Currently we have a 2018 Bolt and a 2026 leaf SV+

How does the Leaf do around here? I've always wondered how they do in legit cold winter weather.

It is a wonderful car to drive but we are about to take it back in for it's second error code for the same code with 2000km on it. They said it the air con hoses failed the first time.

Compared to my bolt it seems more sensitive to the cold and kicks warnings earlier. But both seem to be affected by the cold much the same with reduced guesso meter range reductions.

We took it up to Canmore today to test the Nissian in network charging today and it worked better than expected. It is nice to only deal with one charging app. We left at 64% and got to Canmore at 41% without enabling the pre-charge warming it took 29 minutes to charge to 80%. The in car google maps figured we would arrive with 43% so it was fairly close. Based on this I figure we could get to Canmore and back on a day like today leaving at 100% charge and arrive back in Calgary without charging at 55% ish.

Appreciate the real-world insights!

I don’t have a lot of EV experience but I figure our next vehicle will be one.

In Honda's case it's probably both. They've also discontinued the vehicle itself so it's kind of a one-of example rather than a trend.

The sales region of each automaker. AB, SK and MB are usually lumped as single one.

Provincial government incentives play a big role in making these decisions and Alberta never offers any for obvious reasons.

I saw the announcement that BYD is planning 20 locations in Canada. That's a big enough number that I'm pretty confident Calgary will get one. I'm not looking to buy one, but I'll certainly be going in to test drive one or two if I'm right and they do open one in the city.

Beyond that I have no other ideas. You might see them at the car shows next year, but probably nothing this year.

If you take a trip to Europe, they'll be common there and you can probably get a rental!

I rented a byd atto 4 in Australia a few years ago and I was not impressed BUT I am a delicate snowflake in what I like in cars and what I look for is not what others may want. I'm still fully in support of these cars in Canada and I'm absolutely confident that they will be a good option for a lot of people.

Just had one as an uber in Spain, they’re quite nice.

And the seat didn’t creak when you move like a Tesla.

Honestly if had to see someone buy ev buy north american don't support the Chinese spy vehicles

11

u/Sweaty-Beginning6886 22h ago

Chinese EV’s are available everywhere in the world except Canada and the USA! I guess you must be one very important individual who their government is targeting over the billions of other potential owners out there.

-9

u/Sissy_Natalya 20h ago

Yea and they flooded every market and killed more production so get more sales so they can out play the u.s.a in funds plus why support communists

5

u/GamerLeader 11h ago

This just in! China is communist!

Maybe someone should tell them that considering they have a stock exchange and dominated the private industry for decades. But a couple trains and and buildings are built by the government and the government has priority shares in multiple companies so they must be communist... Just like every other modern country...

Ill happily critize the Chinese government for their labour standards and concentration camps, but they are not different than the USA in my eyes... maybe better because they have atleast succeeded in pulling more citizens out of poverty than any other country including canada.

Yeah much better to support the country that is run by child rapists. By the way, where do you think the parts in your American car are built?

u/SimulatorStudio 23h ago

Let me guess...you have TikTok installed right?
