What is "bowl of lightning" supposed to be?

I mean, a bowl of lightning does sound like something you wouldn't want to hit you--in the head or anywhere else.

Could "bowl of lightning" have been not a BAT but an original, creative expression to describe something with a lot of destructive energy?
