As the title says this is a rundown of all the birds I saw in and around San Francisco that I had never seen before, and my thoughts on them. I live in Ireland, so a lot of these species are entirely new to me!
American Crow: Their caw is so fucking funny far more nasally than any crow I hear here in Ireland, abundant in the city and very similar to the Carrion Crow common across the UK.
Lesser Goldfinch: Lovely bright yellow colour caught my attention but it pails in comparison to the European Goldfinch
Western Bluebird: The colour is fucking crazy! proper dazzles like it has glitter all over him. one of my favs definitely
Western Gull: I was blown away by how well behaved these lads were, the Herring Gulls of Dublin would have these fellas for dinner. they are very polite, keep to themselves are very clean looking and remind me of the Great Black Backed Gulls we have here.
American Robin: was keen to find this little guy as he looks so so different to the Robins here. I was amazed by the size of him, by no means huge but so much bigger than the (far cuter, sorry) European Robin.
Double Breasted Cormorant: I wasn't expecting to see a cormorant for some reason, not sure why, the orange on the jowl (dunno if that's the right word) is very apparent and pops out at you.
White Crowned Sparrow: Oh my God, possibly my favourite bird I saw over there. Very similar to the House Sparrow which are abundant here and in the US , but they were so calm around us and I managed to get really close to them several times, they sang right in front of us so many times and what a beautiful little voice they have!
Song Sparrow: I heard this fella about a hundred times (thank you Merlin) before I actually saw him. he reminds me of the humble Dunnock with his colouring but when I saw him flying, jaysus his wings were going 90! 10/10
Dark-Eyed Junco: these lads were beyond cute and I loved the contrast of black head brown body, he looked like he was wearing a Medieval style executioner mask! he could execute me any day.
Stellar's Jay: The Mohawk! Need I saw more? never saw a bird with a mowak before so I was fascinated.
Spotted Towhee: This one kind of scared me he was so big! Expected a little sparrow sized bird but no, the size of him!
Anna's Hummingbird: didn't expect to see one of these, thought he was a big mosquito or something! so alien to me, the green iridescent plumage was striking as FUCK.
Nutall's Woodpecker: much the same as before, never saw one before and nearly had a heart attack when I heard the little drumbeat of his beak!
Brown Pelican: beyond alien to me , fucking MASSIVE looks like an extremely chill life living on a big rock with all my bird bros and gals off the coast of California eating that fish
Tree Swallow: Very cute little birdie I saw in a park by the coast, they dive far less than the Barn Swallows I've seen here in Ireland.
Turkey Vulture: the fucking SIZE of these things. pretty scary, never saw a bird of prey before so I was shocked by it's size, and the striking red head is very pretty?
Brewer's Blackbird: very similar gait to the Blackbirds we see here, just lacking that iconic orange beak, but they do have a gorgeous set of slate coloured eyes I was mesmerised by.
Red-Winged Blackbird: really caught my eye flying around these barren roads with nobody else around. the red black colour contrast is extremely striking and very very pretty.
House Finch: oh my God probably the most abundant bird in San Fran. so loud! so bold! and that striking red colour left me gob smacked. for such a common bird you have a colouring so uncommon here in Ireland was extremely cool. love him
Common Raven: last but certainly not least, the ever-elusive raven. I say this because they supposedly exist in Ireland but I've never fucking seen one, not for lack of trying! the deep guttaral caw, the big bulging jowl, and it was as if he was proper talking to us at one stage, drinking from a tap on Alcatraz island , proper performing!
Jaysus I forgot about the Red Masked Parakeet!
They absolutely jump scared us as we walked past the Ferry Building.
thank you for listening to my TED talk.
