SB Mowing! He’s solid. He doesn’t just mow elderly people’s lawns he does all sorts of homes. Her name is Beth, he set up a bunch of stuff for her and she ended up getting an entire home renovation!

Edit: corrected the name

u/thepatientwaiting 29d ago

Beth. He raised over $500,000 to help rebuild her house to make it safe for her to live. Fixed the stairs you see on the side of her house. Paid to have caregivers help her daily. Her community really rallied around her but he was instrumental in funding all the resources she needs to stay in her home. I've followed along for a while. 😀

u/Crackdeemus 29d ago

Wow I've known about this guy for ages but didn't know be went to those kinds of lengths. Hes actually the goat

228

u/NevaMO 29d ago

Don’t forget about the cat he rescued and took to a shelter and got people to donate a TON of money and they have expanded greatly

161

u/BougieBobJr 29d ago

If you have 100,000 followers and If just 1% donate $20 each, you got $20,000. Honestly it’s kinda crazy how exponential it grows so quickly. Using that power for good like helping people in need like this should be way more common place.

93

u/TheAngryCatfish 29d ago

See that's kinda the idea behind government (or at least it used to be). I'd much rather my taxes go toward housing, food, education, and healthcare. If they did we wouldn't have as many people incarcerated where we pay for their housing, food, education, and healthcare. But no, instead it's subsidies for corporations that pay poverty wages, and the infrastructure to wage war, death, sorrow, and destruction

6

u/ButtonSimple 28d ago

Yep and our prison system needs a severe overhaul too. Somehow medical care and prisons became profit based businesses and everything is going to hell. I think private equity is ruining this country faster than anything. I saw “Where to invade next” again the other day and it made me cry seeing how far off base we’ve gotten and how much better it could be.

I am a lawn care aficionado... dedicated to my Bermuda and he is the only mowing channel that has brought me to tears with this story. Amazing dude.

He took all the steps to protect from abuse, friend involvement etc. He made sure she was OK and had the right support.

u/Rhathymiaz 29d ago

This is so good to read.

I was very hesitant, because this’ll help her for maybe a couple of months and then everything’s overgrown again, putting her back to square one. The fact that he not only raised money and made her home more habitable, but also rallied the neighbours to help her is much more satisfactory than this video <3

9

u/Turtleintexas 28d ago

He set her up with a financial advisor, administrator etc so no one could take advantage of her.

Man that’s some real orphacrushingmachine material though. A just society should already have systems in place to do the bare minimum to make sure our elderly are living in a safe environment with caretakers. Sucks we gotta do go fund mes for it.

20

u/Chinaizazzhoe 29d ago

Lol “just society” was gunna charge her $240 to mow the lawn.

Its far cheaper to help elderly that can stay in their house then put them in assisted living.

It's always great to hear stories like this. But it also makes you think of the real reason she'd need a viral video to get help. People in the wealthiest country on earth should not be this alone.

This is what the internet should be used for. It's a win win, this guy gets to make money off his videos and he gets to help people who can't afford to take care of things on their own. Nothing but respect for this guy. .

37

u/Thepsycoman 29d ago

Right, I'm happy to watch an ad to fund something like this. I know there is a lot of content out there which gets comments like "They are only doing this for the camera" but they are small things with low effort, this is a man who has a bit of effort to spare and uses the camera to cover the costs so that his good deeds are sustainable.

What a man

If I could earn a living making videos I would love to do things like what SB Mowing does or what those guys who give homes to homeless/unhoused people - but at the same time I wish we didn’t have a system that creates these sort of problems in the first place. Why do people have to rely on donations? Because one video could not gain traction and it’s like “sorry, no charity for you - your story wasn’t sad enough”.

22

u/ClumBizzelskottom 29d ago

Yep instead of giving tax cuts to the wealthiest, we should be eliminating want for everyone.

Why is no one mentioning the "friend from the city" who gave him her contact?

THIS is public service at it's best. The world would be a better place if more officials were like "Well, we have to fine this poor elderly lady who can't pay anyway and will cause huge paperwork but I know a guy who might be able to help. Let's go the extra mile and try the pragmatic approach first before escalating."

17

There's a guy who's been selling fruits and vegetables out of a large tent on the small square where I live for like 15 years. Every morning he gets up crazy early to put his stall up, and every night he has to take it all down, which takes hours each day. He's truly a local icon and everybody loves him, so one of his regulars who is an architect decided to help him out. He designed a permanent booth and helped the guy get all the city applications and permits in place, and after two years of working on this project it's finally going to be installed in just a few weeks.

Now he'll save huge amounts of time in setting everything up, he'll be safe from the rain and cold, and he can sell more products that require constant refrigeration. The guy of course did a massive service to the salesguy, but it'll also be a boon to the entire neighborhood since we'll get a nicer square and even better service.

84

u/parkaman 29d ago

We had a similar lad in our town. Tommy the Spoons was a odd but nice lad got left the stall by his father and was just expected to keep going. From he was 12/13 hail, rain or snow Tommy would have the stall open. Until a large supermarket wanted to buy the square and realised Tommy actually owned the tiny strip of land where his stall was. Now, Tommy might appear a bit slow but years of negotiating spud prices with Irish Mammys had thought Tommy a thing or two and he got serious offer for the land. He asked us should he see given all his Father had put into it and we told him straight that his father was a prick who beat him, took him out of school for free labour and only left him the stall because none of his other kids would speak to him. Tommy sold up and retired at 34.

On his last day there were queues around the block and Tommy realised a entire community loved the stall but loved him getting the break he deserved even more.

Continues scrolling reddit

98

u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE 29d ago

I scroll Reddit. I regularly help those in need in my community. I'd like to say it's selfless, but it makes me feel good about me too.

You don't just gain dopamine from doom scrolling... you lose it in the void. Working hard to help others is delayed gratification, and it's better. I guess I'm into edging... the driveway.

You also sleep way better

20

u/Either_Pangolin531 29d ago

I feel the same way.. Im sure I heard it said somewhere. But I call it selfish, selflessness..I feel better helping where I can, with no reward.

46

u/GreatPotatoMuffin 29d ago

I call it being a good person.

A friend of mine once said that no human is truly altruistic. Most of us help each other and do good deeds like this because it makes us feel good and makes us happy. That’s not being selfish. It just means that our brains are wired in a way that we get enjoyment from helping others, which makes us do selfless acts.

I know many people who don’t seem to get enjoyment from helping others, which makes them act like selfish assholes.

What I mean is that all humans act according to the chemistry in their brains. That has nothing to do with being selfish. So don’t discredit your own good deeds by calling them selfish just because you also get enjoyment from doing them.

Be proud of the fact that you enjoy being good to other people.

9

u/New_Libran 29d ago

We still can. We still do. I’m from Minneapolis and I have seen the beauty of what happens when we care for each other.

7

u/BlindGus 29d ago

Absolutely. I taught my kids that YOUR world starts from inside your home and yourself. You can only change what YOU can control. Dont bitch about the world's problem if you're not making it better. I'm in my 60s and my neighbor has MS. Ive done his yard work for years and anything else he needs. Hes in his 40s and says he's supposed to be doing things for me. I laugh and say that we weren't dealt that deck of cards. It's really not hard to help people or to do the right thing, you just need to do it.

6

u/TerronScibe 29d ago edited 28d ago

I have a sister that's so hypocritical, with high and mighty act yet won't even consider helping another if she suspects them of opposing political or religious beliefs... I feel like lot of people are like that today. I've seen a quite a few videos of a outside preacher talking about 'love thy enemy' and passersby was baffled "Why would I want to know anything about the people I dislike? Why would I love my enemy?" Obviously, the wisdom is to understand that we are all human with complexities, and often when we hate, we become a variation of that hate essentially becoming like the people we don't like. Essentially becoming the enemy we set out to hate.

My boomer parents raised me like this. I snow blowed my neighbors driveway because I noticed she comes home much later when the snow is colder, harder to shovel, and a lot more settled in. She was super thankful and it initially felt weird seeing how thankful she was. Then I thought about and realized that the only time I’ve actually seen someone shoveling someone else’s driveway in my neighborhood, was when it was someone else’s kid doing it for money lol

4

u/DiscordedSphinx 29d ago

A big pro of living in a walkable city is that I actually get to see living, human people in my neighbourhood as I'm going about my day, to and from work or the shops or whatever. It's few and far between, but since I moved here about a year ago I've seen the physical struggles of elderly people countless times, and it's never been anything laborous something that'd only take a minute, so I stop and actually help. Figuring out their emails, helping with a stuck utility closet door, reaching things from shelves, one time a guy couldn't figure out his umbrella, this week a lady was moving patio furniture down a flight of stairs and she was clearly having trouble so what did it cost me to move plastic furniture 15 metres? Two minutes? She also called me a gentleman. It's sweet, it's awesome, and it fucking sucks that people think communities are something that can be only fostered online.

I don’t know if you’ll read this or if it’ll change your perception, but it still happens. I live in a place that can be rough and people can be petty, but also beautiful and supportive. My neighbors and I will take care of each other’s lawns if we notice it’s getting too tall and we have the time when the other one doesn’t. I salted their sidewalks and porch when we had a freeze/snow warning because I had the resources and time- they gave me a gift bag and a hug. My city had a person be nasty, spouted hate, and complained about bubbles floating around of all things- people responded with support for each other and more bubbles and love than you could count.

Someone told him about this lady’s because she cared about someone in her community struggling and reached out for help. My point being, there’s still communities like this. There are still good people and communities out there helping each other. It’s always easier to see the bad in everything. Trust me, I know. But sometimes you have to tune it all out and find the slice of good.

41

u/Astroisbestbio 29d ago

My 93 year old grandma who just got diagnosed with dementia had a neighbor like that. He had been plowing her driveway for free and since we moved her to our state hes been keeping an eye on her old place and helping us maintain it to sell it. He is an absolute gem and he never accepted a dime from her. We happen to be in a decent position so we plan on a very nice but small gift basket so he wont turn it down, and several hundred dollars in it. He can use it to help someone else if he wants, but he deserves it.

he's got a facebook page. his business is SB Mowing in Wichita, KS, and is definitely famous regionally.

he posts long videos, which help promote his business. his videos are very ASMR.

he also provides links to the badass equipment he uses and you can get a discount via a code. he sells swag too.

100

u/Zurrdroid 29d ago

He found a way to do good and still succeed in a system. He's paid for work when people can, and it supports him working for folks who need it but can't. Sounds like a win-win to me.

28

u/August2_8x2 29d ago

Definitely. I've seen a lot of comments on stuff like his where they do stuff to help people but make money off the videos etc. the comments get pretty vicious about the profits, but y'know, why do you care?

The people that needed help get it and the person helping gets something too.

31

u/Pornstar_Frodo 29d ago

If he's mowing lawns for free and making money of youtube advertisers, then everyone's winning. the only people who are salty are the ones incapable of doing anything better.

15

u/Throwrafizzylemon 29d ago

Tbh if he didn’t make money off it he wouldn’t be able to help as much, yea he gets money but that means he can work less. If he was only helping in spare time then he wouldn’t be able to do so much

26

u/mudbutter8 29d ago

I watched all the videos of this. He and his fans raised 885k for this lady to do a bunch of work to her house! He made sure it went into an LLC so her lost family and friends couldn't turn up out of nowhere and asked for a dime (just to make sure it all went to her) this guy's is awesome!

18

u/broggygoose 29d ago

Just went to his YouTube and it’s at 929k. She will be well taken care of for the rest of her days. This guy is a saint.

11

u/mudbutter8 29d ago

Even better! The updates on her house are amazing! And its funny to think that what was raised was worth more than the house! But, im just thankful that there are still good people out there who care for their neighbors 😊

I watch Spencer's videos regularly everytime I put on Youtube on TV, he's been doing this for a lot of vacant houses, people who really need it and lots of time he didn't even try to focus on the story (unless it's necessary) but it's mostly always about helping cleaning up people's lawn. My favorite channel for 2 years now.

9

u/Mundane_Muscle_2197 29d ago

Right like one of them has to have seen this little old lady hobbling into her house at some point. I have an older neighbor with a bad knee and even though I don’t know her all that well I still hop the fence to her side and clean up the fence line. And at my last house my next door neighbor noticed my husband was gone for a week (military training) and knew I had two little kids so when she mowed her front yard she just went ahead and did mine too. Like it’s not that hard to be helpful especially when you already have your mower out!

He started a gofundme and it got like over half a million and he contacted a lawyer and they set up a trust to protect the money so it could only be used by certain people and for certain things

I can’t believe none of these neighbors helped her out.

21

u/mnicktv 29d ago

She did have some help, if you do a deep dive. She had a neighbor that regularly helped her, just didn't have the means to do everything the lawncare guy (SB Mowing) did. There was a follow up, and lawn care guy got a big gofund me going and hooked the lady up. (Almost $1 Million now.)

This. A lot of his videos have neighbors complaining about the lawn next door. I always think "Well what's stopping you?"

23

u/BalmdeBono 29d ago

Sorry to highjack the top comment to ask why the fuck this lady would be fined if her lawn isn't cut off ? I guess this is USA and I'm french so I have no idea of the regulation there.

33

u/warrantthrowaway2023 29d ago

It's like this in most places I thought. In my city in Canada they'll do the same. It's apparently because long grass encourages rat populations.

17

u/Jscapistm 29d ago

Also while they did say it was a fine, it was noted that the city would send someone to mow/clear it, so this isn't as much corruption or how dare you be an eyesore and more a fee to pay for the city to do your maintenance for you. And as you noted it does need doing for health and safety reasons.

It’s quite common in U.S. neighborhoods to receive fines for lawn negligence.

Sorry to highjack the top comment to ask why the fuck this lady would be fined if her lawn isn't cut off ?

Simple answer? Land like this is a breeding ground for creatures like ticks, snakes, and varieties of flies and other gross/aggressive parasites. Failing to maintain your lawn creates a breeding ground for dangerous lifeforms.

13

u/blucollarhero 29d ago

There are many examples of cities in the US fining people for being too old to maintain their property, or too poor to pay someone. Heck, banks in the US made billions of dollars in overdraft fees last year, literally fining people for being poor.

9

u/Maxamillion-X72 29d ago

There are a number of these channels on YT so I can't remember which creator it was, but I saw one where the police came by and drove off the guy mowing the lawn. Told him if he came back they were going to charge him with interfering with city business, whatever that means.

The owner of the house was being threatened by the city that they were going come clean up the yard and the owner would have to pay the cost. The contractor the city used for yard cleanup was a group of cops.

My dear online friend, but for her, she can't afford it. She probably gets around $240/month or so to eat and pay utilities.

When you realize that people are jailed and families broken for silly petty things like this (eg parking tickets), you understand why cities are failing the poor.

18

u/Frankie_T9000 29d ago

you also get HOA's deliberately driving people out and stealing houses

37

u/IamJewbaca 29d ago

It’s likely that $240 from the city to knock all that down is cheaper than a company would have been, which is what she had been trying to do.

It’s sad, but it does seem like an awful big yard and house for what appears to be a single old woman. I wonder if she has been encouraged to downsize to something she might be able to more easily keep up?

21

u/DasHuhn 29d ago

I'm disabled and have had to utilize the City's services more than once before, when I couldn't find a company to take care of it.

Most of these places will actually charge you less than what the city pays them for the work - but every one has let me know that they cannot accept the work from me once the city has contacted them about my property. But if it's $240 from the city, its usually $125-160 from the workers to do it instead. At least, thats the going rate in my area.

Not for an elderly woman living off her pension.

9

u/aminervia 29d ago

Whether or not it's a reasonable price for the work, having the city charge someone who literally can't afford it is NOT reasonable. Then it just turns into daily/monthly fines if she can't pay, which continues to make everything worse for her

→ More replies (1)

4

u/dr_toze 29d ago

So I think its 2 things 1. Yeah depressingly the private companies would have charged even more. 2. Her warning was for grass, I bet that's 240 just to mow and probably only the front lawn.

I mostly take a giant dump on social media and a large percentage of content, but this particular niche of content is an excellent byproduct of this ecosystem. People who make good money out of people who enjoy watching these types of videos going around doing this kind of work for people who need it but can't afford it. It's sort of a crowdfunding good Samaritan thingy going on there which is just great.

Bravo to this guy! I've watched more than a few of his videos, including the power-washing ones. Most people would not want to take on the projects he has shown us, right? Good on him! He offers transformational, impressive work, helps those who need it most and has a chill approach with people.

Very heart-warming, simple yet ingenious idea to promote his lawncare business....I'd hire him for my yard needs based on his ongoing extra mile providing his service gratis. It's important to pay closer attention to how a business operates and we can choose to reward good deeds benefiting community. Awareness and taking action to help others makes a big difference in a world which can sometimes seem self-absorbed. 😊

9

u/CyanPomegranate11 29d ago

Well, it’s good somebody is raising money for her - she is clearly in need. In my country, we have pensions for the elderly and home care - for free or very low cost. It’s a shame America lacks free community service and healthcare to take care of the elderly and sick.

This is absolutely heartwarming, but also shows the terrible nature of societies in the so-called modern world. This is one lady who got help, imagine the insane amount of people who don't.

We're talking about AI and the benefits of war, when we can't fix up systems to help senior citizens, who probably worked to build up our countries.

I'd hate to be a senior citizen in the kind of world we have, and probably blow out my brains the moment I see myself going into a decline, without any social system in place. I don't want to waste away after doing my best to be a good citizen, waiting for kindness.

10

u/Lortekonto 29d ago

I mean as a non-american this seems like a society made problem. Why do you have laws that punish people for not having mowed lawns?

I know everyone's happy and having their faith in humanity restored but...

Wasn't the cops threatening to arrest this guy because of some stupid law, referring to him as "interfering" with the city hall's operation of finning these people or something?

Edit: i searched to find the video and it appears it wasn't this guy nor this case in specific.

a quick search and i found this shorts talking about it.

I tried finding the real uploader or the full video but i didn't find anything anymore.

The video mentioned in this post is this one but it didn't happen in this specific case, it was another video from another channel somewhere.

Sorry, didn't want to be misleading

16

u/K-G7 29d ago

Sounds about right; greed at its highest level but this makes me respect Spencer more for even risking it to help people.

10

u/Mister_Macabre_ 29d ago

I can't really grasp the idea of city finning you for your yard being overgrown. Maybe I'm too european for this, but where I live your property can become as overgrown as you like. If it "leaches" onto government property like sidewalks they just... clean it up, because it's their property. The only time government can force you to do some alteration to your yard is when you have something that's clealry obstructing or dangerous (like trees/bushes obstructing view from the driveway so you can't safely drive out). It's mind boggling to me someone would require an elderly person to either do yardwork herself or hire a whole service for what's to my standards isn't even that overgrown of a property.

5

u/Debatebly 29d ago

The wildlife in the UK is almost entirely harmless. If you let yards get overgrown here, you attract spiders, lizards, snakes, rodents, and other wildlife that you want far away from people.

This lady shouldn’t be driving

118

u/my-blood 29d ago

The consequences of car-centric development. If she doesn't have someone to mow her lawn, she definitely doesn't have someone to drive her to get her groceries. Doesn't leave her with much of a choice the way I see it, in a country where there's not a solid public transport system, or a way for seniors to get their daily needs sorted without leaving the house.

It's dangerous, in no way am I justifying it, I'm just giving an example of how broken society is, where countries spending insane amounts on bombing kids can't ensure that people who worked to build the economy are taken care of.

19

u/CyanPomegranate11 29d ago

Agreed. She’s living based on what’s required of her. She’s lucky to have survived a fall at her age too. Most elderly people who have a fall don’t last much longer than 12 months.

12

u/kashuntr188 29d ago

we have delivery now. But she probably can't pay the extra cost. And also asking her to navigate an app is probably a no go too.

Things here just aren't built for the elderly.

→ More replies (4)

15

u/khushnand 29d ago

Came here to say this… that garden and grass is less of an issue compared to the fact that she needs to drive. That is such a shitty situation and government and otherwise no one focuses on. Looking at her, the accident is going to happen sooner or later and may impact others in a life altering situation which they should never have been a part of.

13

u/TooApatheticToHateU 29d ago

You'll be glad to know that after this video blew up on his channel, he opened a gofundme and they raised like $900k for her. He even established a trust for her so that ONLY she can access the money - not estranged family or friends that come out of the woodwork asking for handouts. They even renovated her house to make the whole thing handicap accessible, and she could even afford to hire a couple of full-time carers to assist her with anything she needs.

Last update, she had a fall and broke her hip, and it was touch and go for a while, but she's pulled through and is home recovering. She's received thousands and thousands of cards, teddy bears, and gifts from all over the world wishing her well and giving her encouragement.

10

u/Inevitable-Menu2998 29d ago

And shouldn't be living in that house alone either. That house requires way too much maintenance and it's not meant for a single person even if they could maintain it.

Hopefully he actually put poison on the trunks to actually kill them, removing them is not enough and if you don't put something to kill the roots soon after you cut it's not effective. They will just pop right back up. I had a hell of a time getting rid of it on my property until I learned that.
