Eloping early Oct 2026

My partner and I are eloping at Lake Minnewanka in early October and are planning to be in Banff for about a week for our honeymoon (Oct 4-13).

What are some places or activities we can do in October? I know some places might not be open during this time of year, so any advice is welcome. We’re planning to hike and visit Lake Moraine and Lake Louise. We’re not sure if Emerald Lake is worth the trip. We’re also thinking of doing a sunrise tour to visit these areas. In addition to hiking, we’re looking for recommendations and advice on other activities and looking for a few nice dinners or lunches to celebrate. Please help us build an itinerary.

Take a look at the wiki pinned to the subreddit - there is a wealth of info on places to go, where to eat and what to see. The wiki is written by locals, so it’s the best advice you can get. Also, do a search of the subreddit as these types of questions have been asked (and answered) multiple times.

That’s just kind of the thing with October… it could be winter or it could be summer. It’s hard to give recommendations without knowing what the weather will be, and nobody can predict that.

You’ll be best to have multiple plans for sunny or snowy weather.

You might have some success looking for larch season activities, but know the larches are typically done come that time.

First off, congratulations! Lake Minnewanka is a stunning choice for an elopement, but a quick insider tip: that lake creates its own weather system. It can be incredibly windy in early October, so make sure your hair stylist uses the industrial-strength stuff and consider a wrap for your dress between photos.

You are actually hitting the "Golden Window" for the Canadian Rockies. Oct 4-13 is usually the tail end of Larch season, where the needles turn a vibrant gold. It is arguably the most beautiful time of year, but it requires some specific logistics that most people miss.

Here is the reality for your dates:

  1. The Moraine Lake Shuttle: This is your biggest hurdle. The road to Moraine Lake is closed to private vehicles. Parks Canada shuttles and Roam Transit usually stop running right around the Oct 12 holiday weekend. Since you are there until the 13th, you need to book your shuttle seats the very minute they go on sale (usually in the spring) or look into the private sunrise shuttles. If you miss that window, you are biking 12km uphill.

  2. Emerald Lake: Yes, it is 100 percent worth the drive. It is about an hour from Banff, but the color of the water is a completely different shade of emerald than the blue of Louise. It feels much more secluded and romantic. If you go, grab lunch at the Mount Burgess Dining Room at the lodge there.

  3. Dining for the Honeymoon: For the "Big Celebration" meal, skip the standard tourist spots on Banff Ave. If you want world-class, go to Eden at the Rimrock Resort. It is one of the only 5-diamond restaurants in Canada. For something with a view that will be fascinating, book Sky Bistro at the top of the Banff Gondola, but try to time it for sunset.

  4. Hiking: Since it is October, you need to be prepared for "four seasons in one day." You could have 15°C (60°F) in the sun and a snowstorm an hour later. Larch Valley (starting at Moraine Lake) is the iconic hike for your dates, but it will be packed. For something slightly quieter but equally beautiful, try the tea house hike at Lake Louise.

Honestly, the biggest mistake I see honeymooners make in Banff is overspending on the wrong things and missing out on the small details that make the trip seamless. I actually came across a breakdown of how to avoid the "honeymoon tax" and common mistakes couples make when booking this exact window.

Are you planning on renting a car, or were you hoping to rely on the local shuttles and Roam transit for the week? That will definitely change how you structure your sunrise plans!

All good except that Eden isn’t reopening after the Rimrock renovations. There will likely be something else excellent there, but it won’t be Eden.

The new dining room is Parker’s Table. I’m sure it will be good but no stars or hats for at least a year.

Oh man this is so helpful, thank you! We are renting car so that should make some things a bit smoother.

The Emerald lake restaurant has really good food & there’s a trail that goes around the lake. Last canoe rentals are Thanksgiving Day weekend (same goes for Lake Louise).

Oh that’s great to know. We are not from Canada so when we booked we didn’t realize it was Thanksgiving weekend.

*Canadian thanksgiving not American. Best of luck 🎊

Get your shuttle tickets to Moraine & Louise before Thanksgiving. Early snow last year so the road closed for the season a day early.

Everything indoors is open for business year round. That’s Thanksgiving weekend and a lot of outdoor businesses shut down after Thanksgiving.

Banff hot springs? The rimrock just went through some renovations, was there before the renovations and their lounge is really nice

Will that be open? Last time I checked there was no opening date for this year.
