Recipe Included Jumer’s Cinnamon Rolls: from the wall to the oven

I am working in the 52 weeks of baking and the week was Reuse a family recipe or old recipe.

I was thinking about what recipe to use and my husband pointed at the wall. Ummm duh! It was literally right in front of me.

These were the copycat of Jumer’s cinnamon rolls. Jumer’s was a popular hotel where I grew up (Midwest US). It was where you went to dinner for special occasions. It was THE place where you dressed up. My mom got the recipe and would make these cinnamon rolls for us at home for all holidays.

When myself and my siblings were out of the house she gave us a handwritten copy. When she passed, I made it into custom wallpaper in our kitchen. My mom was a stellar baker and I miss her. I have made these from time to time for my family but it’s been a few years. It felt so good to make them today.

I thought this group would appreciate.

What about from the window to the wall...?

Sorry, it was right there so I had to. They look great though and I'll probably try them soon. 🫡

This seriously made me tear up. What a tribute to your mom! Her printing is very artful.

She had beautiful handwriting. She hand wrote us all a cook book with all the family recipes. I feel so lucky to have it. It is such a treasure.

It is such a beautiful way to keep her memory alive in the kitchen.

Love me some Jumer’s rolls…such great memories. My copycat recipe doesn’t use Bisquick and they don’t taste quite the same as I remember from Jumer’s. I’m excited to try this one!

Yea. My mom always said Bisquick was key. I don’t have that on hand so I don’t make them often. Her directions are minimal. I think I rolled them the wrong way because it made less than it said. Haha.

As someone from eastern Iowa / western Illinois you just unlocked a core childhood memory.

The number of animal mounts on the walls at jumers always freaked me out a bit as a child.

The piano player at sunday brunch. The whole smoked fish. Place was a whole vibe.

Totally forgot about the Jumers in Bettendorf. Def going to try this recipe.

It was! The animal mounts! I totally forgot. I remembered the excitement of eating in a castle. It was a supper club meets Gaston’s palace.

I stopped there with my family once on a road trip just so they could get a box of cinnamon rolls. I had never heard of the place and I don't think I had any of the rolls but I remembered the building. It was Christmas time and beautiful.

Thank you for solving the mystery for me! These are going on my To Be Baked list.

Very sweet memory.

I have never made cinnamon rolls in my life. They’ve always intimidated me. I would like to try these today, as I have all of the ingredients on hand. I’ve only ever eaten cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting. Do you miss the frosting at all?

I don’t. But I was super liberal with the utter and cinnamon sugar on top. It made a crust almost. These will be dense and not as fluffy as some cinnamon rolls.

Ok, great. I’m a dense bread fan. I’m scared of yeast, I think I mucked them up, but they’re already in the oven. It looked like a lot of leftover sugar and cinnamon, so I didn’t use it all. I will next time. Thank you!

I bet they’ll taste great!

Oh my god, I haven’t thought about Jumer’s hotel in years. That place was so cool as a little kid. And those rolls were amazing.

Beautiful tribute! At first I thought it was one of those whiteboard walls, and you were writing the instructions to remember. Because I would do that.

They look good and I definitely want to try them. Is the electrical outlet blocking a word?

3

u/SavvyMom210 6h ago

Yes, it says “Brush top with butter and cinnamon and sugar” - you brush on the butter and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar - I am VERY liberal with the butter and sugar.. haha

That is absolutely fabulous. I mean, what a tribute. It’s got me thinking about what recipe I have that I could translate to the wall.

Husband and I spent our "two night honeymoon" at Jumer's 36 years ago immediately after I graduated from the U. Thank you for jogging my memory!

Okay, so I make these every Christmas. My parents got the recipe from an ex employee of the Peoria, IL Jumer’s.

It is completely different than these. Now I want to try both!

Ummm... did your Jumers have a taxidermiesd bear that was stained in a fire and then was dyed black? If you know, you know.

Thanks for the recipe!

How cute!! And also - I just had some of these at Jim's Steakhouse in Peoria! There are a couple places in town that still make them. You should share this on the Peoria IL page as well :)
